The Qur'anic

I was planning on saving this title for when I actually had something to say about it, but if anything I am becoming less interested in Qura'nic recitation, so I might as well use this thread title now. (It might just be that I've decided that I don't really like Sheikh Abdel Basset Abdousamad's high-pitched delivery.)

It almost feels like spring here in Philadelphia. While I was on my way to an Israeli restaurant, a taxi went by playing tarteel recitation at a very high volume.

i think my favourite style is ali al-huthaifi's... its lower and calmer and actually sort of comforting.

Yeah, I'm afraid I might prefer a lower-pitched delivery. I think I might like al-Gamdi (sp?).

"The second. . . impact of Egyptian recitation came by way of broadcast, especially programs that were said to have been relayed from Saudi Arabia via short wave radio. Listening to these programs (sneaking into the kitchen in the middle of the night to listen, as in one world champion's story), taping them, scrutinizing the recordings again and again was a national phenomenon among aspiring reciters, especially in the early 1970s. There was even a joke that the voices of Indonesian reciters who listened to the radio in this period reproduced the effect of distortion from the broadcasts. This, along with cassette traffic in the recordings of final rounds of Indonesian regional and national competitions, gave readers from remote areas the materials they needed to become national, even international, champions."--"Taste, talent, and the problems of internalization: a Qur'anic study in religious musicality from Southeast Asia" by Anna M. "There is no doubt that Qur'anic recitation is based on patterns of breath and has an effect on the breathing patterns of those who hear it. The slowing down of breathing is an essential aspect in almost all meditative traditions, and Qur'anic reciters are trained rigorously in breath control. As they recite the Qur'an in long phrases based on deep, slow exhalations, and as they leave a meditative silence during inhalation, those hearing such patterns begin to breathe more slowly and deeply."--Approaching the Qur'an, by Michael Sells.

Looks like this is a great single-CD collection of various quaris.

Wait, I don't understand. They can't all be on that one CD, but if it's a multi-volume set, where are the others? Anyhow. . .

It's on tape, forget it.

I think this sounds really beautiful. I don't know who the qari is.

(The Baluch apparently have good taste in Qur'anic recitation.)

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Sunday, 20 March 2005 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh wait, it's Sheikh AlAjami, whoever that is.

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Sunday, 20 March 2005 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

This is so beautiful. :(

It's like a distillation of the Arab modal/melodic core in its vocal form.

I have no idea how this sounds coming from a non-muslim, but that was gorgeous.

Saturday, walking home from work along Callowhill Street, I saw two guys in a convertible, top down, riding around with Qur'anic recitation playing on their system.

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

Is this good or bad for the music biz?
