'the boxer' is abt dylan?

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

well alledgedly; at least it's one popular interpretaton that it depicts a young dylan ('when i left my home and family i was nomore than a boy/in the company of strangers..'), and retreating to woodstock after criticism (the last two verses). this is supposedly the joke behind dylan knowingly covering it on self portrait.

35. Behind That Locked Door - George Harrison

Jonathan Z. (Joanthan Z.), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm probably wrong, but Joni Mitchell's 'Jericho' seems to me to be about Zimmie, esp.:

Anyone will tell you
Just how hard it is to make and keep a friend
Maybe they'll short sell you
Or maybe it's you
Judas, in the end
When you just can no longer pretend
That you're getting what you need
Or you're giving out anything for them to grow and feed on.

feel so suicidal, just like Dylan's Mr Jones"

Prude (Prude), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes I'm lonely wanna die
Yes I'm lonely wanna die
If I ain't dead already
Ooh girl you know the reason why.

In the morning wanna die
In the evening wanna die
If I ain't dead already
Ooh girl you know the reason why.

My mother was of the sky
My father was of the earth
But I am of the universe
And you know what it's worth
I'm lonely wanna die
If I ain't dead already
Ooh girl you know the reason why.

The eagle picks my eye
The worm he licks my bone
I feel so suicidal
Just like Dylan's Mr. Jones
Lonely wanna die
If I ain't dead already
Ooh girl you know the reason why.

Black cloud crossed my mind
Blue mist round my soul
Feel so suicidal
Even hate my rock and roll
Wanna die yeah wanna die
If I ain't dead already
Ooh girl you know the reason why.

two months pass...
Reviving to add:

41. "The Seeker" -- The Who ("I asked Bobby Dylan, I asked the Beatles...")
42. "American Pie" -- Don McLean ("the jester sang for the king and queen in a coat he borrowed from James Dean and a voice that came from you and me")

spittle (spittle), Saturday, 8 May 2004 05:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, I'll bite:
43. "Me & Bobby D" -- Everything But The Girl

Me and old Bobby D don't get along that famously
A saviour and a seer? Maybe,
but he never meant that much to me.
Sure, I'd love a wild life,
but every wild man needs a mother or wife.
The seven seas you roam
and who's waiting at home?

briania, Saturday, 8 May 2004 06:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Mike Dixon, Saturday, 8 May 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

wow that last one sounds fantastic

de, Saturday, 8 May 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

It's pretty good. It's on one of the vols. of The Lost Lennon Tapes, along with one called "News of the Day" where John sings just like Dylan, and the lyrics are just headlines from the NY Times. I think the audio from the scene in "Eat the Document" where Bob accuses John of being "in love with the fat chick"(Mama Cass) and then throws up is on there too.

Here are the lyrics:

Lord, Take This Makeup off Me
John Lennon

Lord, take this makeup of off of me.
I said, "lordy, lordy, lordy, take this makeup offa me."
it's bad enough on the beach,
but it's worse in the sea.

Because I'm knockin' on heaven's door.
Because I'm lookin' for my ma.

I said, "ma, take these guns away from me."
I said, "ma, take these guns away from me."
I got so thin now, they're draggin' me down to my knees.
Oh yeah, man, do you mr. Jones?

Town,
now I've been here so long, I almost forgot my name.
I said, "lord I been here so long I almost forgot my name."
but as long as I keep touring,
I'll always be in the game, fame, brain, shame and fame and game, fame, fame....

Mike Dixon, Saturday, 8 May 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks Mike. Well this thread shows that a lot of people were/are obsessed with Dylan, but I think Lennon in particular had a bug up his ass over him. First he tried to copy/pastiche him ('You've got to hide your love away', 'Norwegian Wood' 'I'm a Loser'), then parody him ('I Am the Walrus', 'Happiness is a Warm Gun' 'Glass Onion'); he references him in 'Yer Blues' and 'God', acknowledging his importance in his psyche. He reurns to direct political writing eight odd years after Dylan gave it up (the odd track notwithstanding), but realises he's not that good at it. Still unable to shake off Bobby Z in his stay-at-home period he ends up bitter and caustic at his old rival. Dylan's out there, producing the odd masterpeice, full of energy on Rolling Thunder (which i assume the above song references) and remaking himself and his music. Lennon is lethargic, stoned and regressing to chilhood meanwhile.
