CDR80 - What kinda stuff? Explain your taste in one CD

Message Bookmarked

Someone asks you "What kinda music do you listen to?" -Although it's a worn-out party question with no good answer, see if you can put the answer on one CD. Not a CD of your favorites, but a CD that explains what you usually listen to. (I left off more esoteric picks because while I do like them, I only listen to them occasionally.)

It's harder than it sounds....

Well, yeah Alex ... and I was also thinking that other people's attention span isn't that long.. So 80 minutes was generous. (I had to drop about 20 songs that wouldn't fit.)

I was going to say limit it to about 20 songs ....

A side qn - when you think of your taste is it in terms of 'favourite artists' or 'favourite styles'?

I see it as Bands/Tracks that led you up a particular avenue, like listening to Meat Puppets and checking out a lot of the SST back catalogue, REM > Paisley Underground/College Rock, Cocteau Twins > 80's British Indie, Dillinger Escape Plan > Noisecore etc:

Tico - styles i guess, but then i think of the artists who represent those styles the best so they interpolate

A bit of both, I guess. I tend to argue I don't have favourite artists, rather favourite records. However, most of the acts I usually bang on about on ILM seem to have made my CD-R :-)

This thread fascinates me, I guess, because it's interesting to see how people reconcile their disparate "influences"

I think of my taste in terms of favorite moods, I'd say. Lots of the moods are just genre names turned into adjectives, ie soulful, rocking, but it's not the genres that are important, really
