More people into post-rock/avant rock and experimental electronic music - should definately monitor these contemporary jazz developments on websites like AAJ, Bagatellen, BBC Jazz and One Final Note.

This annoys me for some reason, I can't quite articulate why, but I automatically started thinking along the lines of 'well who says what is jazz and what isn't jazz'.
[Especially in jazz, which in my mind covers such a huge amount of music that it is essentially useless as a word to describe a particular sort of music. The amount of times I've just randomly hit a major 7th at a gig, or at a jam with some friends or something, and someone will say "jazz" I'm like, what the fuck?]
To people on here who review stuff; do you judge an album by how good it measures up to other albums in its genre? Or just how good it sounds to your ears? Or in relation to all music ever recorded? Or does it depend on the album? Would you judge an album differently if it proclaimed on the press release to be 'the best' in a particular genre?
