CDR80: What kinda stuff do you want to play?

Crucially different from Dave225's thread: this time, you're putting together a CDR (80 min. max) of the sort of music you would want to play yourself--imagine that it's something you're giving to prospective bandmates to see if you're on the same page. Go.

i mean rap. i'm genuinely curious.

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I was in one band with a rapper (a white Jewish female rapper, as it happens -- and this was while Northern State was still in grade school), and I've played drums for some live freestyling, but that's about it. My involvement with hip-hop would necessarily be along those lines (i.e. not vocal).

spittle (spittle), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 05:34 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha ha -- my guitar playing has been based on the teachings of my master, David Fair -- just to warn you. i've never learned chords, etc, except for the ones I think I have made up and usually play in weird tunings I stumble upon and keep for a while.

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

A couple of friends and I were discussing this at a party a month ago. I'll see if I can remember

Seiji - Loose Lips - For The Beats
Dilinja - Silver Blade - For the Bass
James Brown - Cold Sweat (parts 1 & 2) - For Song Structure
Prince - La la la, Hee hee hee - For Rhythm Guitar
David Lee Roth - Yankee Rose - For Lead Guitar
My Bloody Valentine - I Only Said - For Texture Guitar
Daft Punk - One More Time - For filtering on MBV texture/atmosphere
Prince - Supercalifragisexy - For Party vocals/lyrics
Arthur Russell - Keeping Up - Quiet Number vocals/lyrics
Mystikal - Bouncin' Back - For vocals to be used in the same way Maceo solos are used to James Brown songs - to keep the groove interesting in pt. 2

That's all we did - Sorry Douglas, we weren't planning to make a CD
To fill up the rest of the album put. These songs would be used to provide variety to our albums - not used often.

Diana Ross - Upside Down - For the Strings
Cloud One - Atmosphere Strut - for Patrick Adams Synth lines
King Tubby - anything - For the warm dub.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 06:19 (twenty-two years ago)

jack - move to Ohio - you know you want to. Join my nonexistent band. We (I) don't believe in tuning. Or songs, for that matter.

Half Japanese is an element in the model. Other elements are the liner notes from Indeterminacy, and the final refrain in 5:15.

All this because I'll never be able to write or play something like Cattle and Cane, so I'm going the other direction.
