So what's the deal with these guys?

The couple of tracks on their site are really interesting... though I'm not sure how representative they are of the group as a whole. Has anyone seen 'em live or heard the upcoming album on XL?

Mil, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 05:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The mp3s sound like all direct recordings with really good sound and parts. (but I don't like the all directness of it)

WOT!? (Chris Ott), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 07:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Album's incredible, much more developed than the couple of tracks on the site.

third shelf down, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 10:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the LP is good, but a little "samey" in parts. Seventeen Years is their best I reckon - all in all it's pretty groovy stuff.

Debord (Debord), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

OK so is it all instrumental-based, then?

Mil, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep, entirely instrumental. And better for it.

Third Shelf Up, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh they're great. you should definitely see them if you have a chance. their shows are always good.

third shelf up/down, what makes you say that about the lack of vocals? You really think an extra voice wouldn't work? just curious. i know the guitars are pretty melodic/anthemic whatever but i've sometimes wondered what they'd sound like with some kind of lines over them.

danh, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

atmospheric instrumental electronic riffy arena rock

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I think they're involved enough not to have to add another level - I think with vocals they could easily cross the line into pretentious. I can't think of a vocal sytle that would compliment the music without deducting from the sheer brilliant funk of it. But do correct me if I'm wrong!

Third Shelf Up, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

they are pretentious without vocals, have you seen them live?

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Nope. Good pretentious or bad 'urgh, run away!' pretentious?

Third Shelf Up, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

is there a good pretentious?

one of the guys in the band used to play BASS for DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

There's tolerable, laugh at, and occassionally enjoy pretentious, I think. Depends how it's done.

Third Shelf Up, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

actually my question was kind of dumb. I just want to hear them do a rap track.

instramental music = pretentious?

i like floyd cramer

danh, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw them open for BATTLES...(who are by far a MUCH better band).

CONS:
Every song sounded the same.
They had zero personality.
Member played in an EMO band or two.
They had a semi-elaborate light show.
They played forever.

PROS:
They seem to be popular with the ladies...Holla!!

< spam> oh and BATTLES rule....go see them< /spam>

ddb, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

is there a battles thread? there should be.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

when is any battles stuff coming out?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

there is a group of ep's coming out in the spring. one on monitor, one on narnack.. and another, i think. not sure what label though.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

nice, can't wait.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

So wait, they're no good because the guitar player played in dashboard? that's fucking stupid. how does this even compair?

battles was good i agree, but "Every song sounded the same", "They played forever" and "They seem to be popular with the" guys "Holla!!"

danh, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i WISH battles would play forever. in my head.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

'I just want to hear them do a rap track'?
You heard their Jay-Z and Dizzee bootlegs?

wythe, Wednesday, 25 February 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

What are you talking about?

danh, Wednesday, 25 February 2004 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

this 'seventeen years' sounds like a collection of moments from 'discovery' done badly.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
they were on some "you've never heard anything like this before" when their first ish dropped. like daft punk, phoenix, and rob don't exist? 17 years is a banger though, but i still hate.

johnny and luther (johnny and luther), Saturday, 17 April 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Thursday, 6 May 2004 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
now stop me if i'm wrong, but wasn't there an eighties rock band called ratatat? or am i thinking of someone else?

wogan lenin (dog latin), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 10:58 (nineteen years ago)

not really sure about this band though - it's all very basic isn't it? not blowing my own trumpet but Autofire's "Succotash Wish" does the Megadrive Stadium Rock thing better.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 11:06 (nineteen years ago)

you're thinking of rat at rat r.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

mediocre to the core this lot

bad hair day house (fandango), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

the dow nut industrial average dead joe mama besser (donut), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

say what you will about RATATAT, but Wildcat about made me shite myself with laughter the first time it came out of my car speakers.

I really enjoy this album, and I would say it is entirely unpretentious...good background tunes.

Saw them in Buffalo last Friday and they were really really good! Much better than when I saw them with Mouse on Mars. But then again, Classics is better than their first cd. Has anyone heard the Mouse on Mars remix of Lex???

peepee, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

And what is this band Dashboard Confessional about. The guitarist for Ratatat toured with them (does he still?), but I get the sense that they're not like Ratatat.

peepee, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 13:52 (nineteen years ago)

I liked these guys at first but then I decided that the guitar effect that appears a little too frequently throughout Classics is pretty annoying.

Xander, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

I swore I started this thread years ago.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

I heard they have another "mixtape" CD where they do the beats to the last couple years' rap hits... the first one was great fun; I'd love to get the new one.

Ben Boyerrr, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

i quite like the two tracks ive heard from the mixtape.

max, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 17:28 (nineteen years ago)

you know what? i really really like ratatat and their samey-ness.

s1ocki, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 17:59 (nineteen years ago)

Seriously, it was an energetic show, and the kids loved it. Maybe we were taken with it so much because its been such a dry spell for shows over the last year or so. But the star is the bassist, who is responsible for 79% of their music.

Ya, the new mixtape is anticipated. Most of the versions on the first one are huge improvements over the originals that I'm familiar with.

btwClassics made my top 10 for '06, but it wasn't that great a year for music.

peepee, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

IF only you meant RAT:ATT:AGG.

MRZBW, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

forks you did start this thread years ago. maybe there are two with the same name.

Evan from Ratatat produced the new Jay-Z single '100$ Bill'. Hook is a sample of Despot and Evan produced the entirety of Despot's upcoming album. Good look all around.

rock 'em sock 'em (Treeship), Saturday, 4 May 2013 15:25 (twelve years ago)

my freshman roommate at college would listen exclusively to dave matthews band and ratatat

rock 'em sock 'em (Treeship), Saturday, 4 May 2013 15:25 (twelve years ago)

in an odd coincidence, one of the guys at my pottery studio is Despot's brother and he had five tracks on his phone from the new album. It's pretty good.
