did anybody else buy the Superchunk DVD? (plus POV Superchunk Videos)

Cuz I'm sure glad I did. I forgot what a wellspring of goodwill I had towards '94-'95 era 120 Minutes. I forgot that some bands weren't afraid to ROCK OUT unironically back then. Jon Wurster is an American treasure. I'd be ready to argue that this is the BEST way to appreciate these guys. All wheat, no chaff and cuteness readily visible. God I miss emotional pop-punk from people who don't seem like spindly assclowns.

Oh and POV Superchunk videos!
The First Part
Fishing
Hyper Enough
Driveway To Driveway
Untied

I will be buying this very soon.

Mac's hair in the footage of their first live performance is a stunning work of art.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

God I miss emotional pop-punk

uh... have you ever heard of the genre named "indie rock"?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

popular culture needs more balding guys with paunches

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

or maybe i'm just projecting

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

strongo otm. And indie rock has abandoned Superchunkitude to the emoisteners from what I've gathered.

GOD BLESS JIM WILBUR (and Ted Leo, and Eric Bachmann pre-Waits obsession)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

the only chunk video i remember from memory is driveway to driveway (which i think i only saw once anyway)...i think i vaguely remember the first part too, but i might be getting that confused with the video for jawboz's "savory".

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 03:42 (twenty-two years ago)

1994, will i ever be able to escape you?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 03:42 (twenty-two years ago)

and fuck the Get Up Kids. Those bastards should have been struck by lightening when they had the nerve to have Superchunk open for them. Why not just push them down a flight of stairs.

Driveway To Driveway is the only one I ever saw at the time of its release, but I saw the others on insound a few years ago. Brilliant, absurd, hilarious, touching - all of 'em.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 03:43 (twenty-two years ago)

And indie rock has abandoned Superchunkitude to the emoisteners from what I've gathered

ah to be young... and revisionist.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

struck by lightening
typo, in part becuz they actually did lighten their sound afterwards. Maybe they think Wilco has aged more gracefully or something.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

ah to be young... and revisionist.
oh why can't you just let me believe that the rock I liked in high school is the only rock that ever mattered?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I had never seen any of these videos so I was a little nervous that they might ruin the effect, but they really did do a good job of keeping it simple and capturing what I thought the music was about. Actually the one exception was Driveway to Driveway, which I thought was overdone and I will probably never watch again.

The only other let down was that I was probably expecting a little more Jon Wurster being hilarious. There was some of that, but I guess I wanted non-stop hilarity. I realize that's not a fair criticism, but still.

Scott, Wednesday, 25 February 2004 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

the Mac and Jon switching places on "Fishing" at the end of the documentary had me crying. I had no idea Superchunk was in the annals of bands whose singer does the "percussion assistance" thing. Loved it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

that sounds like footage from the concert previously available on VHS as: "Take The Tube".

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to a screening of it last week. they didn't show any of the videos or bonus DVD stuff (is there anything of note on it besides the documentary and the videos?), but I'm not sure if I want to bother owning what i saw. some good performance footage and usual tour movie zaniness, but nothing The Year Punk Broke-caliber or anything. some amusing exchanges between Wurster and Wilbur, I must admit.

they really are a fantastic live band, though, still.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Superchunk opened for the Get Up Kids?!!!!

There are a lot of things wrong with that sentence.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 06:50 (twenty-two years ago)

um, I'm kind of horrified by the idea that something could fail to live up to The Year That Punk Broke. OK, the music was good in that but am I only the person who wanted to see Thurston Moore die a horrible death after watching that?

J-Rock very otm.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

superchunk were fucking awful both times i saw them

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 26 February 2004 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

their worst show (granted in their tour diaries they've always said that they love to play california, esp. SF) was energetically miles beyond what most bands put forth these days.

first time i saw them: superchunk, polvo, drive like jehu in san diego, 1992... one of my favorite shows ever.

anyways, got the DVD (and the Belle And Sebastian one which is much more artistic and emo, is there a thread for it?)... I've only seen a couple of these videos but I think that I was most impressed with the video for "Fishing".

Also, what was the first video to show someone chugging milk? Cuz "Fishing" (1990) has it, then Janeane Garofolo does it in the "Watery Hands" video, and then someone does it in a B&S video, wtf?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 1 March 2004 06:55 (twenty-two years ago)

first time i saw them: superchunk, polvo, drive like jehu in san diego, 1992... one of my favorite shows ever.

Heh...following year Donut Bitch and I saw a bill of Superchunk, Come, Trumans Water and Fluf in San Diego. And I hate to say it but aside from their first and last song Superchunk left me UTTERLY cold, and I have found nothing to enjoy about them since.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 March 2004 06:59 (twenty-two years ago)

haha fluf... O. took a picture of me skateboarding once. did you guys like olivelawn?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 1 March 2004 07:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't mind them, I prefer Fluf more.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 March 2004 07:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought this DVD the other day. I completely forgot how much I love Superchunk. I still love the video for "The First Part".

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Monday, 1 March 2004 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

In the band commentary tracks the milk chugging ALWAYS gets mentioned

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

okay, i'll try to get to that tonight.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a secret indie rock asshole and have seen Superchunk like 8 times and every time they have been awesome. Also one time Jim gave me a hug--my emo-est moment. I'm trying desperately to get my hands on this DVD but New Orleans is crappy for shopping.

adam (adam), Monday, 1 March 2004 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

my better half is drooling to see the Superchunk DVD but being the penny pincher she is to counterbalance my wastrel tendencies she hasnt gotten it yet. will she like it, gygax? does it scream out "birthday present for Hanoi Jane"?

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 1 March 2004 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish Polvo had stayed together long enough to have a DVD. Or Seam.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Monday, 1 March 2004 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

let me get back to you on that jack, i've just done a once over (after hearing your mix).

JB - i've seen a polvo video: "vibracobra", it's really bizarre "found footage" of 60s-70s family movies and disturbing stuff like this girl's bruises on her legs.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

"Vibracobra" was one of the biggest reasons I started playing guitar.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I got it. It's great. I'M IN IT. You can totally see the back of my head and my Ochsner Medical Center tshirt during the footage from the Halloween 2001 show. I'M FAMOUS BIYATCH.

I'll post my screen capture, with the shadow of the back of my head helpfully labeled when I get around to uploading it.

David Cross is surprisingly funny for once in "Watery Hands" and the documentary.

adam (adam), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

today i listened to foolish. it's 10 years old now. i was 16 when it came out. i am now 26. driving the same car, on the same streets, in the same town as i was when i first heard it. i was pretty happy to be alive.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 5 March 2004 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

it is really too bad "home at dawn" never made it on the album, it would have made the perfect closing song.

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 6 March 2004 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm remembering the Portastatic album Slow Note From A Sinking Ship. That album was great. More Mac for those who love the guy. I re-bought No Pocky For Kitty about a week ago when I got the DVD and I've given it a few spins since. It just takes me back, makes me happy. Good tunes. Throwing Things is an anthem.
