Deluxe Editions

Just wondering what ILM's opinion of the various Deluxe Editions available on CD. I was hardly wone over by the Marvin Gaye pair, as I hardly require demos and dodgy live performances, but I'm going to pick up the Donna Summer's "Bad Girls" as well as "Diana".

Something I find interesting is that this form of feature packed release is usually very canon related, but Rhino have decided to release "Diana", "Bad Girls", & "Street Songs" as well as the usual suspects of Marvin Gaye & the Who (this should have been a band). All of these releases are easily defendable, but hardly Rolling Stone/Q/Spin top 100 album of all time albums.

So I'm curous about 2 things: a) Your opinion about the new canon Rhino is proposing (and it's these kind of lavish/DVD style releases that force critics to pay attention), & b) What albums would you like to see given the deluxe treatment?

Jedmond (Jedmond), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

the diana reissue is superwowace. the chic version of the album is killer. I never appreciated how percussive the chic guitar sound is until i heard teh reissue. the second disc of remixes is half bad either.

paul c (paul c), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I think (I'm not entirely sure what you are talking about) I have the My Generation reissue in this series and it's good (certainly a lot better than the older CD version). But it pales to some of the good CD bootleg versions (in terms of extra tracks, etc) and there a couple of mix problems with it which sort of mar it. And frankly although it's a great album at two discs it kind of feels like complete overkill (the original tracks plus "Circles", "Substitute", "I Can't Explain" and "My Generation" and a couple of the better b-sides and covers would have been just perfect.) But all the Who reissues have these sorts of problems with the tracks mixed over rarities collections and singles collections and greatest hits so it's no surprise that even the "deluxe" version makes the same mistakes.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 04:50 (twenty-two years ago)

the second disc of remixes is half bad either.

should of course read

the second disc of remixes isNT half bad either.

paul c (paul c), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 04:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex you do have part of the series I'm talking about - they all have a specific packaging of digipack kept closed by a plastic slip on. The bottom of the plastic slip is a slightly opaque grey with "Deluxe Edition" written on it.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 05:19 (twenty-two years ago)

'kay. I do have it then. I thought it might be some new CD plus DVD double disc thing that I was unfamiliar with.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 05:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry - the DVD bit would be my fault, when I wrote "lavish/DVD style", I was just thinking about whether the success of DVDs and the ridiculous extras that are included was an influence on the "Deluxe Edition" series.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 05:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I sometimes do not understand the use of a second disc, except for sucking die hard fans dry. The Who's Live at Leeds is fabulous, because now you simply get the whole concert - including Tommy. People have been waiting for that for decades. James Brown's Live at the Appolo restores songs to their original lenght, because on the vinyl album they had to cut them due to vinyl's longplaying limitations. That's all a great service to mankind. But indeed, who needs a second Sonic Youth disc with demo's? Who needs a live disc acompying The Who's Who's Next, that has no real connection to the album? Who needs a 2CD Velvet Underground & Nico including a stereo and mono mix of the album + Nico songs from Chelsea Girl? - especially after the Peel Slowly and See boxset. To me those deluxe editions seem desperate atempts to make money.

Roger in Mokum (Roger T), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

There seems to be no hard and fast rule here. Some are great and some are pants. So, (without recourse to quality of original edition)

Great:
My Gen - Who
Buckley - Sin'e
Who's Next - the Kinks (not really)

not:
VU+Nico
Grease (extra disc = megamix, more incidental music, and another megamix. There was a 'radio friendly' Greased Lightning back in 77, and the film version has a number of different lines. (Blame my kids for my knowledge here)

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The Velvet Underground and Nico Deluxe ed. isn't pants cause it didn't cost much more than the original CD copy I bought and had stolen and its got a peelable banana and some shitty liner notes by David Fricke or someone. Plus as many Nico songs as I will probably ever need.

I agree w/ the Jeff Buckley one, too.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

eric b and rakim have been given this treatment with their Paid in Full album haven't they ..

mark e (mark e), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Vu, Not pants, true. Just not great. I know, what could they have done that they didn't do on the box set. Yes, I got it cheaply, but it could have cost £20 or so. The who one had facsimile labels of the US and UK original vinyl editions. The VU had (hang on...) boring while labels. The singles are interesting, no more (heck, I own one of them..)

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Paid in Full does have a deluxe edition: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=UIDSUB020402250409501275&sql=A38rv283l056a

if Rhino say new canon = Diana + Bad Girls + Tusk + Yes 1968-83, then that's more than OK by me

(I am in CD reissue heaven at the moment btw, what with all the above + ZE coming back + the SoulJazz reissue programme + Altered Images reissues + all the LTM stuff...)

Jeff W (zebedee), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

don't eric b and rakim bang on in the sleevenotes about how unimpressed they were with the coldcut remix of paid in full? hillariously they apparantley pefer the derek b 'urban respray'!

piscesboy, Wednesday, 25 February 2004 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

hi, i'm new here, it's a good board, eh?

anyway, i recently was given the A Love Supreme deluxe edition and it's really quite good. the second cd is just a live set, but to my knowledge is the first time the entire suite from that album has been officially released in a live form, and live recordings of coltrane are always appreciated. so add that to the "good" list.

umop apisdn, Wednesday, 25 February 2004 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

What does Rhino have to do with these releases? My understanding is that most of the deluxe editions are on Universal. Here's the site (which doesn't appear to be updated):

http://www.universalchronicles.com/catalog.asp?cattype=3

Anyone have the Bob Marley deluxe editions? Are they worth having?

Jonathan (Jonathan), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's a great idea - but one which is only applicable to an extremely small number of albums.

My short-list:
Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica (actually pretty much all the bonus material from TMR you could want is on the "Grow Fins" box - but the album still desperately needs re-mastering)
Captain Beefheart - Lick My Decals Off Baby (just to have it available at all would be a plus!)
Captain Beefheart - Clear Spot
Captain Beefheart - The Spotlight Kid

A couple of nice big boxsets of rarities and unreleased material by Prefab Sprout and Tom Waits wouldn't go amiss either.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I have the Live At Leeds one and the Live at Sin-e one (which is a "Legacy Edition" - same concept but by Sony) and they're both pretty good, though the Buckley one could perhaps do without some of the between-song banter. That Eric B & Rakim one looks great, I might have to pick it up if I see it.

I reckon the Velvets one would've been better served if they'd nixed the mono mix of the album and the solo Nico stuff, and put some live material on it. There's obviously stuff like this in the vaults, like that "Melody Laughter" track from the box set.

Hayden Nicholls (Pop the Weasel), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

"What does Rhino have to do with these releases? My understanding is that most of the deluxe editions are on Universal. Here's the site (which doesn't appear to be updated):"

Nothing it looks like, I must have just presumed it was Rhino doing these.

In the what would I want to see released as a "Deluxe Edition"
a) Prince - Purple Rain
Disc 1: Purple Rain remastered + outtakes (of which there are numerous high quality ones available.
Disc 2: Purple Rain B Sides & Extended Mixes + Single Mixes if room is available.
Disc 3: Live at First Avenue 1983: Besides being a great live performance, the concert is noted for three things 1) Debut of Wendy on guitar, 2) Debut of Purple Rain songs, & 3) "I Would Die 4 U, Baby I'm A Star, & Purple Rain" tracks on the Purple Rain album come from these performances (with editing & overdubbing).

If I was going for a great album, that such a Deluxe Edition would help push into the canon (Purple Rain hardly needs any help), I would go for Hall & Oates - Private Eyes. I know Hall & Oates definetly have some good 12" versions that could go on.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

""What does Rhino have to do with these releases? My understanding is that most of the deluxe editions are on Universal."

Rhino have certainly been responsible for some such items - several Elvis Costello titles leap to mind.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd love to see There's A Riot Goin' On get this treatment.

Hayden Nicholls (Pop the Weasel), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

All of the Little Sister songs have to be on "There's A Riot Goin' On".

Jedmond (Jedmond), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and the entire Woodstock performance.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The Wailers -- Catch a Fire is worth a look. Disc two has the original "demos" Marley & crew cut in Jamaica sans the remixing Island's Chris Blackwell added for the final cut.

christoff (christoff), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

One that springs to mind is Robert Fripp's Exposure with both the Darryl Hall & Peter Hammil vocal tracks.

mzui, Wednesday, 25 February 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Jedmond--what are said "Little Sister" songs anyway? (Besides seconding the request for a deluxe Riot reissue of any kind...)

M Specktor (M Specktor), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

One that springs to mind is Robert Fripp's Exposure with both the Darryl Hall & Peter Hammil vocal tracks.

the original edit of Exposure, not the frustrating shorter version which trims the guitar solos, speech cut-ups & ambient sections. the original version never made it to CD. would pay again for that.

(Jon L), Thursday, 26 February 2004 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Info on Little Sister here:

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=UIDSUB020402250946281211&sql=Bcgen97ykkr5t

Basically they were a female vocal group headed by Sly's sister. Sly also wrote and produced the two seongs they recorded: "Somebody's Watching You", and "You're The One (Part 1 & 2)".

Both songs were recorded in 1970 and give incite into what "Riot" would have sounded like without tape problems. "You're the one" is most commonly come across as only part 1, but there are copies of the 5 minute version floating around on P2P.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Thursday, 26 February 2004 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I would go for Hall & Oates - Private Eyes. I know Hall & Oates definetly have some good 12" versions that could go on.

Seconded

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 26 February 2004 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

nine months pass...
I just got the Manic Street Preachers' 'The Holy Bible' with the bonus CD and DVD. It hasn't got any 'previously unreleased' tracks on it at all, just live, session and demo versions.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Hows the "American Mix"? Would it have changed history?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, info on allegedly superior US mix of THB please - I'm teetering on the edge of buying it for that alone.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I find 'Who's Next' and 'My Generation' deeply satisfying in their exhaustiveness. One day, when I see them cheap, I will get 'Live at Leeds' and 'Tommy'. The Marvin Gaye ones are worthwhile because of the single mixes and instrumentals and so on, rather than the demos and live tracks. I would probably enjoy the live tracks more if the sleevenotes didn't bang on about how much he hated playing live and how drugged up he was. I mean, they shoot themselves in the foot a bit there. I had the Sonic Youth one and I only listened to it once. I haven't listyend to the second disc of 'A Love Supreme' because I'm waiting for the right moment for such a pseudo-religious experience - I bought it about eighteen months ago.

Puddin'Head Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

The Who's "Sell Out" CD was unique in that the extra tracks fitted in with the original concept and made it into a 'third side', effectively.

But that was 'pre' Deluxe edition city.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

It's the best expanded reissue, really. No real drop in quality when the unissued stuff kicks in.

Puddin'Head Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

My Generation is great because the original album sounded so shite. The fact that you get extra stuff makes it completely worthwhile.

mentalist (mentalist), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think Tommy looks worth it - apparently the demos are not that special. I want to believe that Who's Next De-Luxe isn't worth getting if you have the previous edition with extra tracks...is there anything good apart from the Young Vic gig? Is this gig special?

The My Generation edition is fantastic, as it's such a great, great record, but couldn't they have squeezed in the mono mix of the original album as well?

Does anyone have the Disreali Gears de-luxe set?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

The Young Vic gig is special. I think so.

The only time Keith Moon gets duff on "Won't get fooled again". Possibly as he'd only played it a few times by then.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

the US mix of the holy bible is unfckgbelievable. 4st7Ibs is like a smash rock hit that never was. even on the dvd james and nick bang on about how ace it is. well worth it.

also the dvd stuff in with it is tops. the field at glastonbury looks half empty. it's really weird, cause *god* knows who was on the main stage at the time, but what were they all thinking?!! richey looks *fantastic*. has to be said i was stood at the back waiting for the rain to go off. i wasnt a big MSP fan then. seems like yesterday.

£12 99 in MUSIC ZONE.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 22 December 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

'Baby Don't You Do It' is, for better or for worse, three minutes longer, 'Pure and Easy' is slightly longer, and there is a slightly different (inferior) version of 'Won't Get Fooled Again'. To be honest, they don't really add up to much, and you have to keep the previous reissue anyway if you want to be a completeist (or just thorough). Also, it has all been 'remixed'. I can't hear any difference though. But then I am a notorious cloth-ears.

The Young Vic recording is interesting because they seemingly don't really know what they're doing. PT actually orders someone to stop dancing because it's putting him off. I think it's worth having, but I haven't really listened to it very much, if truth be told.

And I think the sleevenotes are exactly the same too.

Puddin'Head Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

the US mix of the holy bible is unfckgbelievable.

I honestly can't hear the difference. There's a bit of keyboard low down in the mix on some of the songs, and the drums are a bit more fierce on a couple more. And the guitars on 'Yes' phase in and out a bit, but other than that... nothing.

If anyone's got a link which provides the differences between the two versions, please share it here.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

r u sure u've got the right one???!!!

piscesboy, Wednesday, 22 December 2004 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I have been listening to it on a shitty work CD rom drive through shitty headphones, so maybe I need to give it a listen at home for the whole stereophonic widescreen experience...

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

The difference between the Canadian and the UK Holy Bibles is phenomenal. She Is Suffering is completely different, and on the N American counterpart has this huge synth sweep intro. The album as a whole makes the UK version seem horrifically naked.

Shooz (shooz), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Unless of course, they fucked up and didn't actually release the Canadian version that I have.

Shooz (shooz), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

If anyone's got a link which provides the differences between the two versions, please share it here.

Can't supply a link but there was a post in one of the bigger manics forums that did a whole breakdown of the differences. The list is vast.

I managed to snag an unwanted original copy of the Canadian issue (if i'm correct, it was never actually released in the US as such) from a friend I lived with when I first moved to Toronto from the UK. I believe it was only available in this mix during it's initial pressing, and subsequent repressings have been of the 'worldwide' mix variety.

I wonder if given the deluxe treatment it now has, the value of the original will still hold true. It does have different art work (kinda) after all.

Shooz (shooz), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

has it? that would be great but I don't think so.

Biggest disappointment with the "My Generation" deluxe edition, after the guitar overdubs having gone missing on the title track and one or two other major songs, is that the edit version of "The Kids Are Alright" is used, rather than the full mix with Townshend's entire guitar solo. I have to think this is a mistake, rather than a mono-vs.-stereo mix question; the mono mix isn't included, as are those of a couple of songs.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Monday, 5 June 2006 07:45 (nineteen years ago)

Great sounding set, though.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Monday, 5 June 2006 07:45 (nineteen years ago)

the edit version of "The Kids Are Alright" is used, rather than the full mix with Townshend's entire guitar solo

are you sure about that? i'm almost positive it's the unedited version. but yeah, fucking phenomenal reissue.

Lawrence the Looter (Lawrence the Looter), Monday, 5 June 2006 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

The Young Vic recording is interesting because they seemingly don't really know what they're doing. PT actually orders someone to stop dancing because it's putting him off. I think it's worth having, but I haven't really listened to it very much, if truth be told.

there are a few duff moments, like "bargain" or "too much of anything" where they're still finding their way through the songs. these shows were essentially open rehearsals (free admission, little public notice, etc.). but there are frequent moments ("love ain't for keeping," "time is passing," among others) that are as good or better than leeds.

Lawrence the Looter (Lawrence the Looter), Monday, 5 June 2006 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

two months pass...
I gotta say, there's some odd choices, such as Elton John, Melissa Etheridge, Rob Zombie, Average White Band, ELP and Tears for Fears. I never liked Tears for Fears.

It is fun to get re-acquainted with an album with all the bonus goodies and liner notes, such as Lloyd Cole & the Commotions - Rattlesnakes, Joe Jackson - Night And Day, Alice Cooper - Billion Dollar Babies, Depeche Mode - Speak & Spell, The Glove, Siouxsie - The Scream, and The Cars first album. They screwed up Patti Smith - Horses because it's missing the "Piss Factory"/"Hey Joe" single. Also, could have used live performances from that era, not a recent one.

This just came out:

Sublime (Universal) Aug 15, which includes some Marley and Bad Brains covers. I've never really listened to them, as I thought they were part of the mall punk brigade. Was I wrong?

I see The Pretenders' debut is slated for an October 3 release on Rhino. I hope it has lots of goodies.

I second the Beefheart and Sly Stone suggestions. That Purple Rain would be juicy too.

I nominate:

Van Morrison * Astral Weeks (WB) 68
There are outtakes that Van didn't think fit the album -- some more bluesy stuff. Maybe a live performance from that year too.

The Beatles * Revolver (Capitol) 66
One can dream, right? With all the singles from that era.

Hüsker Dü * Zen Arcade (SST) 84
Must at least add "Eight Miles High." And a remaster is badly needed.

The Feelies * Crazy Rhythms (Stiff/Line/A&M) 80
There are tons of covers they've done that could be included.

Sonic Youth * Daydream Nation (Enigma) 88
Rumor has it a triple disc version is coming this fall (anyone knoew more exact info?). It's about time. It's even been added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress, joining 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' and 'I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man' as mandated by Congress 'to maintain and preserve sound recordings and collections of sound recordings that are culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.

The Sex Pistols * Never Mind the Bullocks (WB) 77
Pull together all the stray and bootlegged bits once and for all.

The Clash (Epic) 77
Same thing -- what the hell is the deal with issuing separate U.S. and U.K. editions? Lame. Bring it all together, with the singles and B-sides.

New York Dolls * New York Dolls (Mercury) 73

Fastnbulbous (Fastnbulbous), Monday, 21 August 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

Deluxe Editions are sometimes interesting, although it depends on the extra content. I am not really interesting in buying a 2 CD version just to get the original demos of the songs that would later end up on the album in other (and better) versions.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 21 August 2006 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

edde (edde), Monday, 21 August 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

supposedly a deluxe edition of the who by numbers is in the works, with a full-band version of "blue red & grey" and a daltrey-vocal version of "however much i booze." and hopefully a full 1976 concert on the 2nd cd.

Lawrence the Looter (Lawrence the Looter), Monday, 21 August 2006 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

That sounds grrreat. Just as I'd thought the Deluxe editions had become the new 'An introduction to...'. I'd like to see The Who By Numbers with the Townshend demo of 'Keep Me Turning' on it.

KeefW (kmw), Monday, 21 August 2006 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

God that would be sweet. 1976 concert. Awesome

Bill Magill (Bill Magill), Monday, 21 August 2006 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

i have bad girls and diana, good 1st cd's but unrelated material (12"s from entire career) on bonus discs. the bad girls bonus disc even includes a song that's on the first cd in exactly the same version.

the who dx's seem pointless as the mid-90s releases had tons of great bonus tracks already.

a.b. (alanbanana), Monday, 21 August 2006 20:02 (nineteen years ago)

I got DJ Shadow and The Orb. I am not really sure why. I suppose it is that or just forget about the albums.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

Haha... I got those too. DJ Shadow one is rubbish, but the Orb one is great; the 'deluxe' bit of it is full of great stuff that I hadn't heard. Due to the buggers deleting it on the day of release.

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 17:56 (nineteen years ago)

Purple Rain. How wonderful would a 2xCD + DVD package with videos, b-sides, 12" mixes, etc. be?

Irksome that some of these never come out in the States, though- ABC, the Orb, Pulp (so far), etc...

Telephonething (Telephonething), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 22:17 (nineteen years ago)

what's the word on the pet sounds reissue?

I think it's the same as the current CD, but with a DVD.

be nice if they did learning to crawl as well (though I don't know what outtakes it has) since those three are the three worth dealing with

As far as B-sides go, there's the Martin Chambers-penned and sung "Fast or Slow (The Law's the Law)" and a bunch of live cuts ("Time the Avenger," "Bad Boys Get Spanked," and a cover of "Money" from the un-legendary US Festival).

Incidentally, as far as legitimate releases go, it looks like Pretenders II is missing the Small Faces cover "What You Gonna Do About It" from Flexipop magazine, and the B-side instrumental "In the Sticks."

two years pass...

In a case of super-deluxe oneupmanship, NIN's drummer Josh Freese has now put out his Since 1972 album on 11 formats. $7 gets you a digital download; $50 and you'll receive a "Thank you" phone call from Josh for buying Since 1972. And, for the fan who has everything, including limitless funds, there's a $75,000 limited edition of one, for which Josh will write, record and release a five-song EP about you and your life story, and take a flying trapeze lesson with you, after which you get to "go back to Robin from NIN's place and his wife will make you raw lasagne". To prove that even the wealthiest fans can't get everything they want, there is a "no spooning" clause.

Schweet. Not a bad b-day present for that crazy NIN fan in your life, heh.
