Hoffenheimer's Frieren (on Kelp Records) is quite possibly the best album to arise from Canada's capital city. And no, they're not German. This is slo-core that edges the local heroes, Kepler.
There cannot be enough adoration of Michelle McAdorey's Whirl.
What about the Montreal avant-garde (Empreintes Digitales, Ambiances Magnetiques)?

Owning fewer than ten doesn't make you (or me) a bad Canadian, Mark - it just means you have taste! But I'm sure I can think of ten to be proud of:
1. NoMeansNo - Wrong2. Simply Saucer - Cyborgs Revisited 3. Tea Party - The Edges Of Twilight4. Voivod - Killing Technology5. NoMeansNo - The Worldhood Of The World (As Such)6. Neil Young - Decade7. Joni Mitchell - Hits8. The Best Of Max Webster9. Voivod - The Outer Limitsand, inevitably...10.Rush - Chronicles

Ned's AMG review captures it well. But the release date given is wrong (it was originally issued in 1999 on Queen of Cups.) I've seen her live twice since then but have no idea of what she's been working on lately.

No mention of Fludd anywhere...Listening to their first two albums, '71 and '72 (neither of which contains "Get Up, Get Out and Move On," also '72, not their biggest hit--"Cousin Mary" was--but I'd say their best). They're like the Canadian Buffalo Springfield: Greg Godovitz formed Goddo (the good), other members went on to Saga and Trooper (the not-so-good). Their second album, Cock On!, had its title changed to ...On! at the time; I'm sure buyers were suitably perplexed. It was rewatching New Waterford Girl, which uses "Ticket to Nowhere" from the second album, that triggered my interest. Immediately recognized "Turned 21" from the first LP as one of those useful fillers stations would always play to fill their Cancon requirements.

There was actually a book a few years ago--two books, actually; there's a companion volume for singles--that polled this very question.

Setting up to discuss the upcoming Canadian Music poll
Maybe I can reserve a spot for the Canadian poll right after that finishes.― clemenza, Saturday, 25 February 2023 17:06 (yesterday) linkVery much open to an Aphex poll with a long voting period MokaWould give me (& others I presume) time revisit the soundcloud dump― groovypanda, Saturday, 25 February 2023 20:36 (yesterday) linkI'd certainly participate in a Canadian songs poll, but I'd be concerned that, with a relatively small number of voters with wide-ranging tastes, it might end up atomized - dozens and dozens of single votes for interesting artists from 70 years from all ends of the country. On the other hand, if we impose a limitation (such as "only underrated songs" or only from a certain time period), that's probably going to further limit the amount of ballots that could come in. So, a conundrum.― Halfway there but for you, Saturday, 25 February 2023 21:51 (yesterday) linkSo a poll where we can vote for the complete works of Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, Carli Rae Jepsen, Rush, Grimes, Feist, Shania Twain, deadmau5, Michael Bublé AND Drake?― Camaraderie at Arms Length, Saturday, 25 February 2023 22:04 (yesterday) linkPlus Oscar Peterson, Dream Warriors, Deja Voodoo, Skinny Puppy, Anne Murray, New Pornographers, Martha and the Muffins, Tanya Tagaq, Harmonium, Triumph, Gilles Vigneault, AND the Rankin Family!― Halfway there but for you, Saturday, 25 February 2023 22:07 (yesterday) linkAnd Organized Rhyme.― FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 25 February 2023 23:49 (yesterday) linkI think there's a wealth of stuff for a Canadian poll. (Though I'll admit to being at least a decade out of touch.) I'd try to gently suggest that voters limit themselves to one or two Neil/Joni songs--that would be the biggest danger if left unchecked, I think, that it becomes Neil vs. Joni--but, obviously, vote for whatever you want.― clemenza, Sunday, 26 February 2023 04:05 (fifteen hours ago) linkOr Neil/Joni/Carly Rae Jepsen--she seems to be popular around here.― clemenza, Sunday, 26 February 2023 04:05 (fifteen hours ago) linki'm not in a position to tell ppl what is canadian and what isn't, but for myself there's a difference between those, like neil and joni, who decamped to california 50 years ago, and those, like the hip/sloan/~RUSH~, who did not― mookieproof, Sunday, 26 February 2023 05:41 (thirteen hours ago) linkBob & Doug McKenzie should win, however it shakes out.― ⓓⓡ (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 26 February 2023 06:09 (thirteen hours ago) linkthat wasn't even funny 35 years ago― mookieproof, Sunday, 26 February 2023 06:21 (twelve hours ago) linkTake off, eh― The land of dreams and endless remorse (hardcore dilettante), Sunday, 26 February 2023 06:52 (twelve hours ago) linkhttps://i.giphy.com/media/l0K4aGQF9DmJsvPRS/giphy.gif― mookieproof, Sunday, 26 February 2023 08:32 (ten hours ago) linkThis is underway:POLL of Many Colors - ILM Artists Poll #117 - Women of Country MusicI'd like to claim the next spot in line for a Canadian poll.― clemenza, Sunday, 26 February 2023 15:40 (three hours ago) linkHalf of my list will be arcade fire and skinny puppy.― FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 26 February 2023 16:36 (two hours ago) linkOpen the Canadian noms thread asap lest this thread become it― The land of dreams and endless remorse (hardcore dilettante), Sunday, 26 February 2023 16:45 (two hours ago) linkA certain TV theme song will be my #1 in that one.― Chris L, Sunday, 26 February 2023 16:54 (two hours ago) linkSure, The Littlest Hobo.― Halfway there but for you, Sunday, 26 February 2023 16:58 (two hours ago) linkThe Trouble with Tracy had a theme song?I don't want to interfere with the other poll, but will open everything up right after.― clemenza, Sunday, 26 February 2023 17:01 (two hours ago) linkhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDxH98aWjmI― Halfway there but for you, Sunday, 26 February 2023 17:06 (two hours ago) linkThat theme song (kith) is literally playing at the diner I am currently sitting on!― FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 26 February 2023 17:09 (two hours ago) link

An album I wanna rep hard for is Sam Larkin’s Ransom. Cobbled together out of two earlier tapes plus some new recordings, it’s chock full of amazing songs and great performances, even if it’s not an audiophile dream. Sam was a singular & idiosyncratic singer-songwriter who never had it together to gain even moderate indie fame, but those who know know.

You could...honestly, I'd just wait till the country poll's finished. I'm confident the splendor of Canadian music can withstand the three-week wait.
― clemenza, Sunday, 26 February 2023 23:07 (three years ago)
Don't mean to act like this is a grievous problem, but does anyone share my misgivings above (and have any suggestions), or am I a voice crying in the Canadian wilderness?
― Halfway there but for you, Sunday, 26 February 2023 23:10 (three years ago)
The thing you outlined could very well happen, but if it does, it does. It's just a poll. If you can get over 20 voters, certain things do tend to accumulate votes, even when the field is wide open--that happened with me with the video poll, and with the road-films and political-films polls.
