ILM's Top 100 Canadian Albums

I think the Globe & Mail once addressed this but I wanna see the results from an ILM bias. And I can't find any top Cdn album listing in the archives.

(This thread inspired by recent talk of Martha & The Muffins, which reminded me of the absolute effin' greatness of This Is The Ice Age. Which I'll choose as...)

Sym (shmuel), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Also Rheostatics should be much higher, they are "Canada's Finest"

In a perfect world, the Rheos would have all ten of the top ten spots, really.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 26 February 2004 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Caspar, Godspeed were #84.
Which album are you talking about? Is it the apocolyptic one with the spoken word rantings or the one with the long song titles and hand drawn liner notes?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 26 February 2004 04:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it was the one with the hundreds of musicians on it.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 26 February 2004 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

My Hip pick is Trouble at the Henhouse, but:
Hayden -- Everything I Long For
Bruce Cockburn -- In the Falling Dark
Bryan Adams -- What F***** album is summer of 69'...oh god

Jaromil (Jaromil), Thursday, 26 February 2004 07:36 (twenty-two years ago)

You can kill me if you catch me on some Lilith Fair shit, but McAdorey is cool beanz. derrick you turned me on to her, remember?

My friend renovated Sar#h MacLach$an's house on the island and said she was a total bitch.

Le Coq, Thursday, 26 February 2004 07:39 (twenty-two years ago)

6. The Pursuit of Happiness - TPOH
Do you mean Love Junk?

what about men without hats, "pop goes the world"!?!
I love Pop Goes the World but someone should mention Rhythym of Youth.

Spirit of the West - Save This House needs mentioning.
Julie Dorion & The Wooden Stars as well.
And as much as I'd want to say Angel With a Lariat for all the whinners who'd complain otherwise KD Lang's Shadowland hasn't been mentioned.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 26 February 2004 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw South Pacific maybe 4 years ago, they were pretty great. I don't think I heard their album though.

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Thursday, 26 February 2004 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

If Mark is a terrible Canadian, then I am even more shame-ridden. (Ergo, the motivation for starting this thread.)

Hoffenheimer's Frieren (on Kelp Records) is quite possibly the best album to arise from Canada's capital city. And no, they're not German. This is slo-core that edges the local heroes, Kepler.

There cannot be enough adoration of Michelle McAdorey's Whirl.

What about the Montreal avant-garde (Empreintes Digitales, Ambiances Magnetiques)?

doug watson (solid air), Thursday, 26 February 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Did anybody catch the Cdn Jazz awards Tuesday? Or the results thereof?
I love Molly Johnson to bits, but she took awards for Composer and Musician of the Year, and, uh, she's mostly a singer of other people's songs.
I mean she cowrote a few of the songs on her last album, and she's a dynamite performer and deserves to win awards, but not necessarily those ones.
Who's got my back here?

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Thursday, 26 February 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"i don't think i own any more than ten albums from this entire thread. i am a terrible canadian."

Owning fewer than ten doesn't make you (or me) a bad Canadian, Mark - it just means you have taste! But I'm sure I can think of ten to be proud of:

1. NoMeansNo - Wrong
2. Simply Saucer - Cyborgs Revisited
3. Tea Party - The Edges Of Twilight
4. Voivod - Killing Technology
5. NoMeansNo - The Worldhood Of The World (As Such)
6. Neil Young - Decade
7. Joni Mitchell - Hits
8. The Best Of Max Webster
9. Voivod - The Outer Limits
and, inevitably...
10.Rush - Chronicles

Myonga Von Bontee, Thursday, 26 February 2004 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

forgotten from this list:

royal city
neil young- harvest

and my brain is crowded with others

scout, Thursday, 26 February 2004 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

6. The Pursuit of Happiness - TPOH
Do you mean Love Junk?

Yeh yeh, sorry, though to be fair the gigantic lettaz on the front threw me.

Words cannot describe how much I think the Tea Party is a waste of perfectly good food and air.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 27 February 2004 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

How does Michelle McAdory's Whirl compare with Crash Vegas's Aurora (which I loved)?

And has anyone mentioned the Constantines Shine a Light yet. Or Stars Heart?

David A. (Davant), Friday, 27 February 2004 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=UIDMISS70402262105312424&sql=A5k77gjtr46ic

Ned seems to like it. I didn't even know she had a solo album. I'll have to check it out.

maypang (maypang), Friday, 27 February 2004 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, Red Earth >>>>> Aurora

maypang (maypang), Friday, 27 February 2004 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, thanks for that. Hey, we may disagree on the relative merits of Crash Vegas' albums, but digging around AMG after reading Ned's entry there, I found out that the site doesn't even acknowledge the existence of Aurora!

(Thinks: I wonder if they want an update for completeness' sake).

David A. (Davant), Friday, 27 February 2004 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

(There's a totally gratuitous extra "hey" in the above post, sorry for that.)

David A. (Davant), Friday, 27 February 2004 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I noticed that too. It's an alright album though, esp. moments like Wide Open Spaces. It just sounds too much like a band imploding though.. in the bad sense.

maypang (maypang), Friday, 27 February 2004 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Whirl is far more informed by improvised and experimental approaches than Aurora. Not surprising, given that her main collaborators were Eric Chenaux and Martin Arnold from the Rat-drifting label (as opposed to Crash Vegas' Colin Cripps... who's now backing Kathleen Edwards.) Michelle's lyrics on Whirl tend toward the mystical and lack the overt sexuality of those from her final days with Crash Vegas.

Ned's AMG review captures it well. But the release date given is wrong (it was originally issued in 1999 on Queen of Cups.) I've seen her live twice since then but have no idea of what she's been working on lately.

doug watson (solid air), Friday, 27 February 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Glad to be able to help. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 27 February 2004 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

He still hasn't done those The Peter Parkers reviews yet though.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 28 February 2004 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Re AMG - the titles of the two best tracks on Anvil's 'Forged in Fire' are incorrect! It's "Motormount" (NOT "Motormouth"), and "Butter Bust Jerky" (NOT "Jerry")

dave q, Saturday, 28 February 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

He still hasn't done those The Peter Parkers reviews yet though.

*cries*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 28 February 2004 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Re AMG - the titles of the two best tracks on Anvil's 'Forged in Fire' are incorrect!

Ah, but the Crass and Au Pairs suggestions for similar titles are spot on!

doug watson (solid air), Sunday, 29 February 2004 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Just wait till I get my hands on you, then you'll cry, CRY REAL GOOD LIKE!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

10. Thor 'Keep the Dogs Away'

I witnessed Thor play this last night. I must say, of all the artists I thought I'd never see play, he's right up there.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 7 March 2004 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

No Trouble! No Devin Townshend! Not that i'm a big fan. My fave Canuck album of all-time would have to be the self-titled album by Plastic Cloud. That thing is so fucking beautiful it's ridiculous.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 7 March 2004 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Did anyone mention The Paupers? Both their albums are excellent.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 7 March 2004 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

thirteen years pass...

No mention of Fludd anywhere...Listening to their first two albums, '71 and '72 (neither of which contains "Get Up, Get Out and Move On," also '72, not their biggest hit--"Cousin Mary" was--but I'd say their best). They're like the Canadian Buffalo Springfield: Greg Godovitz formed Goddo (the good), other members went on to Saga and Trooper (the not-so-good). Their second album, Cock On!, had its title changed to ...On! at the time; I'm sure buyers were suitably perplexed. It was rewatching New Waterford Girl, which uses "Ticket to Nowhere" from the second album, that triggered my interest. Immediately recognized "Turned 21" from the first LP as one of those useful fillers stations would always play to fill their Cancon requirements.

There was actually a book a few years ago--two books, actually; there's a companion volume for singles--that polled this very question.

http://bookmanager.com/bni/9780864925008/jacket_med.jpg

#1: Harvest. Should have been #1 (but #3 instead): After the Gold Rush.

clemenza, Monday, 17 July 2017 18:00 (eight years ago)

five years pass...

Setting up to discuss the upcoming Canadian Music poll

Maybe I can reserve a spot for the Canadian poll right after that finishes.

― clemenza, Saturday, 25 February 2023 17:06 (yesterday) link

Very much open to an Aphex poll with a long voting period Moka

Would give me (& others I presume) time revisit the soundcloud dump

― groovypanda, Saturday, 25 February 2023 20:36 (yesterday) link

I'd certainly participate in a Canadian songs poll, but I'd be concerned that, with a relatively small number of voters with wide-ranging tastes, it might end up atomized - dozens and dozens of single votes for interesting artists from 70 years from all ends of the country. On the other hand, if we impose a limitation (such as "only underrated songs" or only from a certain time period), that's probably going to further limit the amount of ballots that could come in. So, a conundrum.

― Halfway there but for you, Saturday, 25 February 2023 21:51 (yesterday) link

So a poll where we can vote for the complete works of Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, Carli Rae Jepsen, Rush, Grimes, Feist, Shania Twain, deadmau5, Michael Bublé AND Drake?

― Camaraderie at Arms Length, Saturday, 25 February 2023 22:04 (yesterday) link

Plus Oscar Peterson, Dream Warriors, Deja Voodoo, Skinny Puppy, Anne Murray, New Pornographers, Martha and the Muffins, Tanya Tagaq, Harmonium, Triumph, Gilles Vigneault, AND the Rankin Family!

― Halfway there but for you, Saturday, 25 February 2023 22:07 (yesterday) link

And Organized Rhyme.

― FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 25 February 2023 23:49 (yesterday) link

I think there's a wealth of stuff for a Canadian poll. (Though I'll admit to being at least a decade out of touch.) I'd try to gently suggest that voters limit themselves to one or two Neil/Joni songs--that would be the biggest danger if left unchecked, I think, that it becomes Neil vs. Joni--but, obviously, vote for whatever you want.

― clemenza, Sunday, 26 February 2023 04:05 (fifteen hours ago) link

Or Neil/Joni/Carly Rae Jepsen--she seems to be popular around here.

― clemenza, Sunday, 26 February 2023 04:05 (fifteen hours ago) link

i'm not in a position to tell ppl what is canadian and what isn't, but for myself there's a difference between those, like neil and joni, who decamped to california 50 years ago, and those, like the hip/sloan/~RUSH~, who did not

― mookieproof, Sunday, 26 February 2023 05:41 (thirteen hours ago) link

Bob & Doug McKenzie should win, however it shakes out.

― ⓓⓡ (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 26 February 2023 06:09 (thirteen hours ago) link

A certain TV theme song will be my #1 in that one.

Sure, The Littlest Hobo.

― Halfway there but for you, Sunday, 26 February 2023 16:58 (two hours ago) link

The land of dreams and endless remorse (hardcore dilettante), Sunday, 26 February 2023 19:17 (three years ago)

An album I wanna rep hard for is Sam Larkin’s Ransom. Cobbled together out of two earlier tapes plus some new recordings, it’s chock full of amazing songs and great performances, even if it’s not an audiophile dream. Sam was a singular & idiosyncratic singer-songwriter who never had it together to gain even moderate indie fame, but those who know know.

Should we then move this conversation to 100 Can-Pop Classics?

You could...honestly, I'd just wait till the country poll's finished. I'm confident the splendor of Canadian music can withstand the three-week wait.

Don't mean to act like this is a grievous problem, but does anyone share my misgivings above (and have any suggestions), or am I a voice crying in the Canadian wilderness?

The thing you outlined could very well happen, but if it does, it does. It's just a poll. If you can get over 20 voters, certain things do tend to accumulate votes, even when the field is wide open--that happened with me with the video poll, and with the road-films and political-films polls.
