This is where you recommend some UK hip hop to someone who hasn't heard anything outside The Streets and Dizzee Rascal.

Oh, they're fantastic, but I need more!

(apologies if this has been covered, but searching for "UK hip hop" chucks me out)

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

my favorite ever UK rap track is New Flesh - "More Fire" (a Tim Finney recommendation, btw)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Pitman.

ddb, Wednesday, 25 February 2004 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

The odd Blak twang track...errr...Definition Of Sound, Iceberg Slimm, Durrty Doogz.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

And Hijack. They were great.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

For starters, get "Countryman" by Skitz. Covers a lot of ground, guest spots from about 70% of the Brit-rap hierarchy from a few years ago, essential listening.

Blak Twang- "Kik Off": Takes the logical leap of the UK equivalent of US street thugs being football hooligans. Raucous, shouty, and with a perfect skill for a cultural drop.

Fallacy- "Blackmarket Boy": Kind of a bizzaro universe Dizzee Rascal (ie, he's a rapper that's listened to a lot of garage, rather than the other way round). Has some absolutely stormers, "The Groundbreaker" and "Big N Bashy" being properly dirt. This album, like nearly every rap album made in the UK, features Rodney P. He's the British Busta Rhymes. Except he doesn't advertise mobile phones.

Phi Life Cypher- "Higher Forces": the highspot of UK rap this year so far. Lots of long-winded metaphors and cramming of 80 syllables into a bar, but done with such a love of hip-hop as to win you over.

DJ Format- "Music For The Mature B-Boy": OK, yes, it's music for people who find Jurassic 5 too challenging. But! "Charity Shop Soundclash"! My god that's an amazing song.

Also worth checking out: Jehst, Aspects, Vinyl Dialect, and the aforementioned Pitman.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Or if I smoked more.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

You're friends with Infinite Livez - the No More Bananas guy? Tell him I think he's a genius!! (and I've only heard one song)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, Infinite Livez (the "No More Bananas" guy!!) used to front my friend Colin's band. He is an incredibly nice and talented guy. He is also on the Extra Yard comp that Gaz mentions above.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

@d@m1 is cooler than I. I must pick up that big dada stuff...i hope it's all as good as No More Bananas!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 26 February 2004 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Plus One/Scratch Perverts put out a double cd a few years ago with one side mixed UK hip hop and one side mixed d&b. The hip hop one was great - Rodney P's brill "Trouble", "The Groundbreaker", Fallacy & Plus One's "Special", Blak Twang's "Tricksta", Skitz and Die's "It's On"... As a whole it's slightly better than Extra Yard I think, although the latter is great also (esp. for "No More Bananas"!).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 26 February 2004 04:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I still really like Roots Manuva's Run Come Save Me. In fact, I think I appreciate it a lot more now than when I first got it a couple years ago. I used to think the songs in the middle were a drag. Now I think they may be the most interesting parts of the album.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 26 February 2004 07:13 (twenty-two years ago)

What do the Streets and Dizzee Rascal sound like?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 26 February 2004 07:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Dizzee sounds like a much cooler incarnation of MC Tunes, actually. (Think 808 state's "only rhyme that bites" but don't forget the "much cooler" part.) This doesn't tell you much about his music but it nails the sound of his voice.

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Thursday, 26 February 2004 07:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Rodney P and Cocoa Beeeeeeeez!!! And Infinite Livez seconded.

Le Coq, Thursday, 26 February 2004 07:36 (twenty-two years ago)

umm Just Jack ? grief .. i cant deal with that album .. just bores me .. but on the other hand .. Kid Acne's Coucil Pop album always makes me smile. If we are going to Mention 3 Wise Men/Overlord X how about Ruthless Rap Assasins. their first album was a masterpiece of samples and comic book references and Kermits first exposure to the world. good stuff.

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 26 February 2004 08:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Neneh Cherry. There's also a great UK Hip Hop comp but I forgot the name of it. That doesn't help at all, now does it?

nathalie (nathalie), Thursday, 26 February 2004 08:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Infinite Livez-"Pononee Girl"

MY favorite song about having sex with a My Little Pony, though you may have your own.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 26 February 2004 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and I see that there's a thread too:

Blindsided by brilliance! "No More Bananas" by Infinite Livez (UK Garage I think?)

big baby jesus, Friday, 27 February 2004 05:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Riddla is the most slept on MC in the UK.
?!?!??!?!?!?!??!?!?

Old Fart!!! (oldfart_sd), Friday, 27 February 2004 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
I picked up the Titan Sounds label comp "The Introduction", which is basically tracks by Skeme, Big P, The Extremists and combinations of the aforementioned (and yeah Rodney P features on a track). It's awfully good: a really nice mix of slamming tracks, reggae-influenced tracks, downbeat sad tracks, but with a no-nonsense energy to everything that's really attractive (avoiding the tendency of a lot of UK rap to slip into droney too much weed indifference).
