Which early nineties hip hop collective reigns supreme? (Moving's great cuz when you are unpacking it's like you've just bought tons of new records which you are sorta familiar with, but you'd also sort of forgotten about.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 26 February 2004 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

what?

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Thursday, 26 February 2004 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

D.I.T.C. takes it. They were more prolific, had better MC's and better producers.

angel duster, Thursday, 26 February 2004 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh tough....Runaway Slave vs. Enta Da Stage, both classics. I guess I'll take DITC - Big L, Lord Finesse, and Andre the Giant are pretty boss.

(also the OGC album was kinda dull)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 26 February 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

haha where were yall three years ago when i ws starting threads abt this shit w nobody on them but me and fred solinger!!! anyway id take ditc for two of the greatest of all time (pun & l) but the best album between both crews is still DAH SHININ!!!! also da beatminerz cd from a couple years ago ws mediocre but nowhere near as wack as diamond d's cypress hill trip hop rmx

$$, Thursday, 26 February 2004 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

dah shinin is great as well....Does Pun count as DITC? (I don't remember how the affiliations worked) I know Fat Joe was part of it back in the Flow Joe days....

(I was somewhere else on the Internet 3 years ago!)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 26 February 2004 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Dah Shinin' is amazing (actually it was picking it out which pretty much inspired this.) Is the Cocoa Brovaz album even close to as good?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 26 February 2004 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

b: steele can do the singsong style and hes a pretty-boy nigga. the bitches be lovin them cuz of him- hes got good hair and hes shinin!
s: let me tell you something man. for one, my man tek will beat his little light skinded ass!!! two, your man must be on some prettyboy shit cuz he cant even really smoke weed. he shdnt even be in the cocoa brovaz if he cant smoke weed!!
b: steeles for the bitches, man!
s: 'steele' means nothing; 'tek' is a specific item- a specific brand name!!
b: you just hate him cuz hes pretty...
s: its easier for him in this fuckin country!! they oppressin the dark skinded brothers!! yo hold your head tek...

$$, Thursday, 26 February 2004 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

wasn't there a supposed a Buckshot/Tupac duets album? did that ever come out?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 26 February 2004 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

s: come on, show can make beats and he can rhyme.
b: show played himself because he gave up the mic, kid. he aint no real mc.
s: he gave up the mic to let a.g. finally shine. he was tired of taking out his man on the mic with his stutterin rhymes!!
b: a.g. wins cuz he wrote one of the best rhymes of all time: 'dont fuck wit no devil / id rather marry oprah / thats right im pro-black'. that shit is incredible. thats the revolution, right there!!
s: thats just another light skinded motherfucker tryin to pretend hes more black. him sayin that is just like that bitch justin timberlake sayin 'im pro-black'.
b: thats if you get it twisted. the light skinded nigga gets more dap beacuse...
s: hes mulatto!! mulattos should stick to lotto!!
b: he had to overcome the mulatto stigma and a.g. is the man on the mic. he named himself after andre the giant, crushin niggas!
s: show named himself after a whole industry, 'showbiz'.

Enta da Stage is probably one of my all time favorite albums. i think i've picked it up three times since highschool (stolen once, lost once). Dah Shinin is great and i only recently picked up the Heltah Skeltah album which has one of my all time favorite songs ever "Leflaur Leflah Eshkoshka".

unfortunately i stepped away from hip hop for a few years and missed any DITC material besides the one time i heard a song that sampled Cat Stevens "Was Dog A Doughnut?". anyone want to give a lil guy a nice primer of stuff that's worth checking out.

JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 26 February 2004 05:41 (twenty-one years ago)

1. Showbiz & AG Runaway Slave (good luck, it's way out of print)
2. Diamond D Stunt, Blunts & Hip Hop (in print and cheap)
3. Big L Lifestyles of the Poor and Dangerous (also in print)

I don't have any Lord Finesse albums, but the first couple are supposed to be quite good.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 26 February 2004 05:47 (twenty-one years ago)

nah - Lord Finesse was a gifted lyricist but his beats were always kinda dull.

Boot Camp wins easy here - Evil Dee vs Diamond D? No contest!

Runaway Slave is outta print? I have that CD - how much is it worth these days?

Can I get a soul clap? Err, I mean, an eBuyer?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 26 February 2004 05:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Well there are 14 bids on the one on eBay right now (currently $31) so I'd imagine you can get a bit for it.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 26 February 2004 05:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Dah Shinin' is amazing. One of those crowning achievements that will never be topped by them again. Cocoa Brovaz ... weak.

although that Super Crooklyn song where they sample the Super Mario beat is sick.

tk, Thursday, 26 February 2004 05:55 (twenty-one years ago)

oh shit, i didn't realize Diamond D was part of it. the wifee has "Stunts, Blunts & HIp Hop". who else is part of the crew?

JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 26 February 2004 06:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Big L, Show and AG, Lord Finesse, and the lamentably forgotten group The Legion - my eternal respect to anyone who remembers the name of their single. If no one gets it in a half hour I'll give the answer.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 26 February 2004 06:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Dah Shinin' is stunning. Also any Show & AG.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 26 February 2004 06:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, I'm going to sleep. The Legion's single was "Jingle Jangle," and it was pretty great.

Speaking of long lost classic, what the fuck happened to Trendz of Culture?? That "Off and On" song was the shit (tho "Valley of the Skinz," not so much...)

Man, I miss when hip hop was 90% great. Now it seems I have to dig really hard to find anything even remotely interesting (Jay Z, Kanye, the odd Clipse joint and the new British invasion aside, natch)

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 26 February 2004 06:26 (twenty-one years ago)

You are listening to the wrong stuff, Roger. It's still out there and a lot of it is getting radio play (although maybe only south of the Mason-Dixon and the occasional BET spot.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 26 February 2004 06:30 (twenty-one years ago)

What? I bought Runaway Slave not that long ago. Well, I guess it was about 4 years.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 26 February 2004 06:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I once heard that Lord Finesse freestyled every verse he ever did. Ain't buying that, though. Maybe he just never wrote shit down a la Jay Z.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 26 February 2004 06:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I'd go w/ DITC as well although as everyone's said, Dah Shinin' is ridic.

"Da Graveyard" = best posse cut of all time? Big L's first album was pretty raw. "Street Struck," "Da Graveyard," "Put It On," etc. "No Endz No Skins" makes me laugh w/mysogynist glee. Whats the line? "My girl asked for a ring so I gave her one round her whole eye." Somethin like that.

I've got Runaway slave on CD...I got it a couple years ago on half.com for like 20 bucks. Donno how much it goes for now.

"Sally Got A One Track Mind," that's a straight joint too.

I think the albums boot camp click dropped were stronger, but overall DITC was a stronger crew.

Black Moon - "I Got Cha Opin (Remix)" = best hip hop song evah?!

djdee2005, Thursday, 26 February 2004 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

When's someone gonna say "My favorite early 90s jazz-hip-hop songs were Eye Know and Nickel Bags!"

djdee2005, Thursday, 26 February 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I was reading those ego trip bits trife was quoting today. random.

Sym (shmuel), Thursday, 26 February 2004 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Buck Em Down (Remix) >>>>> I Gotcha Open (Remix)

tk, Thursday, 26 February 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll fight you on that one. The opening horns on the "I Got Cha Opin (Remix)" >>>>> Buck Em Down Remix

djdee2005, Thursday, 26 February 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

haha i like the bizarre flipmode cover of opin best of all!! why were da beatminerz affiliated w them anyway, they did an aight song on the digga album too

$$, Thursday, 26 February 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

"Day One" has to be in my top 5 ever, so DITC -- altough it is a tough call. Big L was just a lyrical monster. I can't wait for the new L album Finesse is gonna put out.

s>c>, Thursday, 26 February 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

eight months pass...
Bumping this just to disagree w/ Roger Adultery who said that Lord Finesse wasn't much of a producer - his minor key dark + minimalist shit was as great and mournful as any producer from the time (see: Big L's album for great examples). I like his use of vibes, the production sounds so hollow, so the vibes just sort of ring emptily and hopelessly in the vacuum around the drums which are always really fucking heavy (like in "Da Graveyard.") Another great example is "S.K.I.T." by Lord Finesse (its actually what inspired me to make this post).
