New Mario Winans song feat. Puff Daddy

okay, I heard it on the radio today...I think it's called "I Don't Wanna Know"....

It's very interesting...nice vocal melodies, pretty straightforward singing (not over melisma city) on the part of Mario (who I'm not very familiar with)....

The interesting thing is the structure....about 2/3s of the songs is very spooky and minimal, just a drum pattern and some whale sound/new-age keyboard pads in the background....

then, on the 2nd chorus, it kicks in with some house piano stabs and disco strings - very dramatic....

the Puffy verse is okay, but it's the same vocal pattern he's overdone a million times before....I don't think I'll be able to hear him rap without thinking of "Have you ever been to San Tropez/ and heard a brother play the man-doh-lay?" ever again.

anyway, wondering if anyone else has heard this and has any thoughts.

I LOVE THIS SONG. Arguably better than "Ready Or Not" by the Fugees (which is what it samples). Mario's desire for ignorance is kind of interesting in its lack of confidence and Puffy notes how he gave you extra cheese!

Plus I'm impressed by the gall of basically doing karoake over "Ready Or Not" (or whatever it might have been that the Fugees sampled). Puffy hasn't lost his touch.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 26 February 2004 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Plus I love how Puff Daddy is evidently still fuming about J. Lo claiming that he didn't let her breathe. He ain't letting that go.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 26 February 2004 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

oh god, Ready or Not - - I feel stupid I didn't catch that - that's what that is...the strings and stuff weren't on that were they, though? wow I haven't actually heard a fugees song for like 5-6 years probably..

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 26 February 2004 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

oh shit this is the ready or not jack!!! haha i kept halfway hearing this and thinking it ws a puffy freestyle over the beat or something!! its good to see hes finally going back to the trackmasters remix approach again after making some kinda boring original beats lately - also i thought you meant mario mario not mario winans, i dont know any mario winans songs :(

miccio do you like the p diddy remix of my way?? its great of course but i wish durst actually rhymed over the psk beat bcz he cd be like 'ppl always asking l.b. what does it mean??'

$$, Thursday, 26 February 2004 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

fly ladies in the place no need to act snooty / cuz the l is for large and the b is for booty

I dunno if I heard the P. Diddy remix. I heard Old New Songs once but none of those remixes really grabbed me. I don't remember if that was on it though.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 26 February 2004 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I really like a lot of Winans' productions and hooks, but this song is just pathetic. how the hell do you jack a Fugees beat but make it sound even wacker? "I really like that sample, but let's re-do the drums, they're not wack enough".

that "man-doh-lay" line really is wonderful, though.

I think Billboard credits the song to Enya, too (since it's her sample). I don't know if P.'s JLo mooning / whining is endearing or sad / scary - it's been, what, 3+ years? He should do a version of "F*ck It" and move on.

Actually, I think every celebrity should do a version of "F*ck It", release a box set, and donate the proceeds to Save the AIDS Ribbon.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

haha oh fuck its ENYA...no wonder i thought it sounded like my bloody valentine in the background

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

wait did the Fugees sample it from Enya too? It's TOTALLY the hook from Ready Or Not!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, the Fugees sampled it from Enya too. the source track is called "Boadicea". Fugees sampled it without asking permission; her manager said it was "one of the worst cases ever of copyright infringement":

On my way home from work tonight, I heard a "response" song to this track (by Nicole?) called "I Already Know". The DJs weren't feeling it, but I thought it was MUCH better than the original - there's some purty harmonizing in the background. Kinda reminded me of Beyonce's version of "In Da Club".

Or maybe I'm partial to this remake (as I am to the answer to that Eamon track) because the original's aren't my cup o' luv/hate.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 11 March 2004 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"Make no mistake," he continued. "If Enya had not intervened. The Fugees would have been in one of the biggest lawsuits in the business. I want her to have full credit for saving these people from disaster."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 11 March 2004 04:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I had the same response as Ethan the first time I heard it, the DJ said "new Mario" so I thought it was the guy who did "Just A Friend" (who's from Baltimore!), I was a little disappointed that it was Winans, although he's good too.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 11 March 2004 04:39 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, I just saw the video on MTV and the artist line reads:

Mario Winans featuring P. Diddy and Enya

NIIIIIICE

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ornico Ho" is just around the corner

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I never heard the fugees song before I read this thread, but now that I've heard both mario winan's track and the fugees I think his sampling is better, and for that matter I'm feeling his song more.

I don't know why there would even be a rebuttle track to this, since it's such a sappy song about how he doesn't care if his woman's cheating on him, because he loves her. It'd be really moronic to make a rebuttle when there's nothing to rebut.

Ayy thanks people i been looking for the title to that Enya song for sooooo long!! and now i have it so thanks!!

i really like this Mario Winans song...i think mainly because of the Enya part...

if P.diddy/Puff Daddy wasn't in it i think it would b alot better...he cant really rap?? he just talks fast. I aint really a fan of his.

Sara, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

the melody is enya, the drums are a beefed up version of the "customer" drums by epmd.i forget where they originally got them but i think it was from sum 70's rock group.

sirus (sirus), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I was SO upset that no one (most of you) did not hear the fugees "Ready or Not" on Mario Winans cut...it's so obvious...I honestly had no idea what Enya had to do with it until it said so on the video...
She did stop the Fugees from going to court, but in that she denied herself the credit, that song came out when I was in high school (and now I'm graduating from college) oops on her part....although I think she's great.

Pretty AKA Lady, Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Mario Winans did not steal the beat from, this group called the Fugees, he actually got it from ENYA. P. Diddy had to pay a six Digit sum to use a demo of enya's song. The The background beat is called "Boadicea" It's on enya's CD "the Celts" The Fugees almost got the crap sued out of them for using that beat on there 1996 song, "Ready or Not". But enya just said that they had to give 10% profit from that song to her. The Fugees never even made money for that song. And Personally i'm happy about that. Being the BIG ENYA fan i am. :)

i love the song i dont wanna know because me and my botfriend been going throw some issuse and i have the feeling he is playing me b-cause everyone is telling me the same story. So i think this song is the best.

UNKNOWN, Sunday, 11 April 2004 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I love how shocked and surprised they are when they find out it's Enya.

Face it people, she's one of the most critically underrated people working in music today.

(Meanwhile, the Enya tribute album i'm putting together is coming together very nicely. Should be done this November.)

Kevin Erickson, Sunday, 11 April 2004 03:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought Boadecea was on the Shephard Moons album??? Show's how little I know. I think this song is good, but P Diddy is still sounding the same and I'm not sure the synth stabs suit the rest of the piece.

Ben Somerville, Monday, 12 April 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

nineteen years pass...

Weird how this song is mostly forgotten yet timeless

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 8 July 2023 08:35 (two years ago)

Also does a better job of integrating the Enya song sample

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 8 July 2023 08:37 (two years ago)

I don’t think it’s forgotten at all, the recent cover version with The Weeknd was a huge hit.

Siegbran, Saturday, 8 July 2023 08:45 (two years ago)

i was gonna say!

dyl, Saturday, 8 July 2023 15:26 (two years ago)

i figured that was the reason for the bump
