Music from Six Feet Under

What's up with the use of 4 Hero stuff on Six Feet Under? Has anyone noticed this? Sure, there's a the Zero 7 tune on the soundtrack, but I swear that there's more of this stuff skulking around in the background--especially when characters are hanging at Brenda's apartment.

Maybe I'm just going crackers writing about the show.

i haven't seen this show for ages and was finding it hard to keep up - what was the 4 Hero track? 'Hold It Down'? i assume it wasn't 'Cookin Up Yah Brain'

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 26 February 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't Photek do the theme tune or something too?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 26 February 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Kid Loco remixed it...and yes, I agree, the third season kinda blew.

The 4 Hero was Ultra Nate-Twisted.

it was the only time i got bitter at television.

st jimmy the doomed one, Thursday, 26 February 2004 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Worst part is--my essay works really well for the first two seasons and then the 3rd season completely buggers the whole idea up cuz it's so bloody feeble.

cybele (cybele), Thursday, 26 February 2004 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

The third series is great!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 26 February 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

no it is not.

st jimmy, Thursday, 26 February 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

It doesn't make sense with the rest of the series and, furthermore, Nate becomes a swear-mongering fuckwit.

cybele (cybele), Thursday, 26 February 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm not sure i've seen any of the third series - i saw the bit where Brenda drives off but maybe that was the last one of the second...i assume she comes back anyway

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 26 February 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

If only for Catherine O'Hara it is great.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 26 February 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

agreed, catherine is great but the nate character turns into a boring idiot and his wife/girl just as. none of the subtle traits and exploration of the 'human condition' which made the first two so compelling. it felt like a parody of the first two.

jimmy the doomed saint, Thursday, 26 February 2004 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

That's part of what's great about it! You can see Nate hating what he has become, but feeling that he has to face up to this commitment! Maybe it's because I am about the same age as the character, but I felt he developed in a really interesting way.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 26 February 2004 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

And the speaking-to-dead-people motif completely loses its interest. Whereas in the first two seasons it's used as a way for people to learn about themselves--the dead people simply being projections of there own neuroses (very nice and Freudian--goes well with Brenda's family and her own problem with having been analysed since childhood)--in the third season it all becomes quite supernatural. The dead people are actually able to impart information--they're ghosts, not projections and this turns the show into just any old show. It's no longer half as interesting or compelling and turns into the X Files.

cybele (cybele), Thursday, 26 February 2004 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

but the mother has also gone into parodic overdrive. and claire's pregnancy - was pure holly oaks drivel.

yes, i can see what they did with his character arc but jesus does it have to be so not entertaining? he was beautifully written for the first two series.

and the brother/lover storyline - stale and dead.

it was awful.

jimmy the doom saint, Thursday, 26 February 2004 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Agreed that season 3 left much to be desired, but I also felt that way about season 2 in hindsight.

There's still 4 or 5 episodes in the middle of season 3 that I missed due to lack of interest, but I don't think seeing them would make things better.

Prediction: season 4 will be hard to make interesting, as all of the characters are now so watered down they've got nothing to build on.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 26 February 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

the end of season 3 was great after the Lisa incident. I expect next year to get better with James Cromwell becoming a regular

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 26 February 2004 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

*cough* ILM, chaps!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 26 February 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, Charlie, but I must chime in with a vote for Pro-Season 3. Thought it was EXCELLENT. Completely bought the shift in Nate's character.
And, yes, the music supervisor over there does a great job... I remember some Interpol last season, and some Soundtrack of Our Lives.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 26 February 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

If you ever have a question/comment about the music on Six Feet Under, I'll bet the music supervisor and all around good guy Thomas Golubic'd would be happy to respond: thomas@supermusicvision.com

Thea, Thursday, 26 February 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

It's probably a no-no to list other folks' email addresses. I am waiting for the lightning bolt to strike.

An alternative is to go to www.supermusicvision.com. I am not advertising (second lightning bolt); Tommy G's a true music lover, is all.

Thanks--and sorry about the off topic comments...
