Films/oscars - "best score" or whatever

I'm not complaining* (in this thread) that Lord of the Rings won everything ... But the category for best musical score reminded me ... awards show or not .. Does it seem like every big-budget drama made in the last 20 years has the exact same music?

*(Truth be told, I think most of the categories like costumes, make-up, editing, special effects - the academy voters just thought "well, Lord of the Rings had costumes, had special effects, had music - so I'll vote for that.")

Yeah - I think these kinds of categories are mostly worthless. I can't imagine the academy voters actually going out of their way to listen for outstanding scores, they just look at all the big movies and pick from those.

or like do you think most of the voters know the differenc between "Sound Mixing" and "Sound Editing"? I don't.

I think the voters (many of whom have never been within 100 feet of a sound mixing or editing booth and likely have no clue about what goes on in there) use the most basic of logical reasoning, i.e. "Since Movie X is the best film then it must have the best editing, cinematography, costumes, etc.". That's like saying "since Album X was the best music released this year, then it must have the best guitar solos, drum miking, string arrangements, etc.".

I haven't actually listened to it, but there was an NPR piece that analyzed all five scores up for competition this year. Might be interesting.

Thanks for that link. It is interesting. Also, I think all of the scores would be better if they weren't associated with the films. I think the visuals of a foggy field and period costumes and/or creatures with hairy feet detract from them as music. (ironic, innit?)

What is the best best score then? I'm talking Oscar winning, not best score ever.

It's actually surprisingly difficult to choose.
