Anyone got the Daft Punk Live album?

My first impression was that it would be a cash in. Reviews have said otherwise. Whats the truth? or your slant on it?

Hello new answers.

Ronan, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

eh yeah, I got it through Audiogalaxy. It's pretty good. Homework II for those who didn't get Discovery. Just 45 minutes of good clean fun, with some interesting versions and some ace bass drum programming.

Omar, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I didn't even know there was a live album til now -- shows how much I know about new releases. I will have to take a trip to audiogalaxy this afternoon...

Nicole, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's a 45-minute show from 1997. No song ID's on the CD, just one long track. One for really dedicated fans, I suppose... (I prefer a memory to a live album)

JoB, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, Amazon has a tracklisting:

- WDPK I

- Da Funk

- Rollin & Scratchin

- WDPK II

- Alive

The version of Alive is excellent, with a nice breakdown and extra drumrolls.

Omar, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I got this a few weeks back. How has noone heard it? It's absolutely one hundred percent brilliant! Starts with an amazing Da Funk and then the tempo just goes through the roof. The whole thing is just total raw dance energy, it's like very few mix albums I've heard. Also it's recorded in such a way that it sounds exactly as it would in a club.

Ronan, Saturday, 20 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah i got a copy of this recently, seeing as how i'm one of those people who prefers homework to discovery (although to be honest i still need to give discovery a proper listen,i've heard the whole thing loads in this pub that used to play it on fridays, but that was ages ago)it suits me down to the ground....i don't think anything could match the album version of rollin' and scratchin' but the version on this is also excellent...

What about the Daft Club record that came out in 2003?
Anybody like it?

Magic City (ano ano), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Not sure how one could fail to "get" Discovery -- it ain't Charles Ives!

Best DP ever!

See also: the tragically brief thread I started. Though I do suppose that the brevity of it is mostly my fault, so hey.

original bgm, Saturday, 7 May 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

I get chills listening to the crowd response as different parts of Da Funk are introduced

W i l l (common_person), Saturday, 7 May 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, definitely. I love how the crowd noises sound almost 'on beat' much of the time. The whole thing just tops Homework by a large, large margin. All killer, no filler! ;-)

original bgm, Saturday, 7 May 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

I haven't listened to the live album for awhile (maybe tomorrow) but I remember it being killer stuff. Better than Daft Club which lacks the direction of the other albums a bit. Still pretty good though.

Nick H (Nick H), Saturday, 7 May 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

i guess i should get around to hearing this some day!

seeing people talk about audiogalaxy at the top of the thread has made me nostalgic.

does anyone ever talk about how the first thing you here on this (the keyboard stabs) are off of Discovery (from "Short Circuit")?

altair nouveau, Saturday, 17 March 2007 00:21 (eighteen years ago)

this rules so hard. 'alive' just slaughters the album version!

haitch, Saturday, 17 March 2007 00:23 (eighteen years ago)

I'm loving the Coachella set at the moment(For the 100th time)
And the DVD is amazing. Can't wait for the official version.

MRZBW, Saturday, 17 March 2007 01:33 (eighteen years ago)

oh wow didn't know they were touring. hmm.

W i l l, Saturday, 17 March 2007 01:50 (eighteen years ago)

find the live @ coachella set, it's just as good and you realize that absolutely every daft punk is a complete & total classic. also, if you find this, the daft punk bbc essential mix from 97 is silly & ridiculous, but basically a 2 hr version of "teachers". dope as fuck.

There's a DVD with a couple of audience video recordings edited together, but there's no official version planned, AFAIK.

search slsk fr LIVE AT THE ARCHES GLASGOW which the ardcore fans consider better than ALIVE. same tour, but 2 hours long.

pisces, Saturday, 17 March 2007 13:49 (eighteen years ago)

On April 29, Daft Punk performed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival where they received a jubilant reception for their first U.S. performance since 1997.[16] Thomas Bangalter has been reported as saying that there will be a DVD of their 2006 live set.[17]

[17] is a link to a french forum. Find the link on wikipedia.

And the DVD out now is a compilation of some amazing audience shot clips. There's about 5 minutes missing(still pictures in place) and a some footage here and there that's not too good, but the concert as a whole is amazing. The sound is just as good.

http://www.coachella.com/forum/showthread.php?t=742 <-- Pictures there. And some nice links... And TED LEO said this to pitchfork.

Daft Punk, Coachella
I can't even remember the last show that I've been to that I wasn’t playing. I've been on tour so much. But the only times that I've really had a chance to watch other bands when I wasn't playing, have been the days off at the festivals that we've played this year. And I know it's not going out on a limb at all, but the Daft Punk set at Coachella-- I'll be coasting on the good vibes I got from that show for a number of years to come. It seems like it was universally appreciated, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't in the camp who felt that way.

this is good advice! the version i found is a mere 75 minutes long but its completely awesome. you can do so much with a 909 and a sampler :D

one amazing thing about alive 1997 is that as Ronan said it sounds exactly as it would in a club. see also live at liquid room. none of the coachellas i've heard come close to this (not that i'd expect them to, of course)

Can anyone verify that Daft Punk are back on form with their recent live performances?

The last time I saw them was in Nottingham 10 years ago (on the tour when they did Alive '97) and they were superb. Fast forward to now and they are doing a gig in Amsterdam that I would love to go to, but have a fear (esp. after the dreadful Human After All) that they are not worth the effort.

weareok, Monday, 23 April 2007 11:52 (eighteen years ago)

have a look on youtube for evidence - looking/sounding excellent to me. hope to see them in Hyde Park when they play.

blueski, Monday, 23 April 2007 12:13 (eighteen years ago)

that arches set is amazing.

haitch, Monday, 23 April 2007 12:56 (eighteen years ago)

i mean i really want to see them in current 'greatest hits' mode but if they came out and did something like that my head would burst with the excitement of it all.

haitch, Monday, 23 April 2007 13:09 (eighteen years ago)

There are basically 2 Daft Punks:
A) no masks, 2 "real" 909s, 2 303s, synths, and tables.
B) masked, 2 macbook pros running ableton live sets with EVERY sound that they ever made.

I saw A @ a rave on south side of chicago in 96-97 and @ rave in wisconsin 96-97. I saw B @ coachella. A > B and B > A if you never saw A.

valoss, Monday, 23 April 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

I can verify that their Coachella show was one of the highlights of my life.

Spencer Chow, Monday, 23 April 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

A > B and B > A if you never saw A.

this sounds highly plausible to me as a member of the 'b' group. like spencer, i would have been totally fine with permanently losing my hearing after the coachella set. sorry that audience recordings aren't living up to what we're talking about but maybe that just makes it even more awesome (cause i was there haha)

seeing them at in Berkeley in a couple months will probably not be as good but at least i know a good falafel place near the Greek.

great hummus + musical rapture = good times!

Yeah, I'm with MRZBW, the recording I've got sounds exactly as good as it needs to be.

the recording i have needs to be louder.

funny farm, Monday, 23 April 2007 21:10 (eighteen years ago)

eh yeah, I got it through Audiogalaxy.

lol audiogalaxy

strgn, Monday, 23 April 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)

There's one audience recording from the Coachella set which almost sounds like it's from the soundboard.

The audio is fantastic, but the hyperbliss of the lightshow and the humor of the robot helmets made it life-changing.

Spencer Chow, Monday, 23 April 2007 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

yeah the coachella recording that's most common has fantastic sound for a boot.

by The Pig In Zen

Damn Amelie... you must really be annoyed by Daft Punk to have this post be almost completely void of sarcasm.

Is anyone on this comment board going to try and defend electronica? Like, does anyone actually think that I just have never given Paul Oakenfold a good listen? Cuz I hate people like that. People that listen to techno past the age of 19 are shallow-ass people that enjoy ecstasy a little too much.

That being said, I like the Chemical Brothers. But they're different

Atop the Steaming Heap

I couldn't agree more. I mean, if I agreed more, I'd be disagreeing with you.

Now, why doesn't anyone ever make the mistake of saying "I could agree more," but many often make the mistake of saying "I could care less?"

Didn't one of your AV Club peers recently do an unironic piece about how Daft Punk at Coney Island was better than real musicians with guitars and drums?

there's a thread about that movie, by the way:
