They burned too brightly...?

Tunes which generated a huge buzz at the time, which were universally loved, mentioned by all the "right" people, played everywhere... but which have subsequently dipped off the radar almost entirely. Grandmaster Flash called them "used grooves".

Suggestions:

Buffalo Stance - Neneh Cherry
Keep On Movin' - Soul II Soul
Can You Party - Royal House
Roadblock - Stock Aitken Waterman (no, honestly, it was all over Notting Hill Carnival '87)
Love Can't Turn Around - Farley "Jackmaster" Funk
Drop The Bomb - Trouble Funk

I guess by dropped off the radar you mean 'not played out any more' - I think most of those are accepted as part of some 'dance canon', hugely respected etc etc., always appear on comps but maybe not listened to or played much...

yeh i'm not sure what to suggest because most BIG tracks go this way - i would've said 'Higher State Of Consciousness' but it's having a bit of a rebirth lately. maybe 'Fly Life' and 'RIP Groove' tho?

Baby D 'Let Me Be Your Fantasy' - obviously #1 rave-pop anthem but i sometimes forget it ever existed and you don't hear it anywhere but on nostalgic rave compilations

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 26 February 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Tina Moore 'Never Gonna Let You Go'

took 2step into the charts - maybe it still gets played here and there but as with Baby D it does feel somewhat ignored/forgotten at times when you consider how huge it was

Comparatively you still hear Rosie Gaines' "Closer Than Close" on the radio and in shops a fair bit.

Amy Lee - 2 Times

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 26 February 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think '2 Times' was universally loved and mentioned by all the 'right' people tho

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 26 February 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Somewhat of an understatement, that.

she then went on to direct the international box office hit Crouching Kitten Hidden Puppy

Despite the examples, I wasn't just thinking about dance tracks; but I have repeatedly noticed this phemomenon of certain tunes going from Huge to Dead, almost overnight (I can almost recall the precise day that "Love Can't Turn Around" went cold). Meanwhile, tracks which didn't do much at the time slowly achieve "classic" status, as more and more people gradually start subscribing to the collective fiction that they had *always* been big.

Anyway, RIP Groove and Closer Than Close are both good examples of "used grooves". Also Rockers Revenge "Walking On Sunshine", which was praised to the heavens for being groundbreaking, genre-defining etc etc in its day, but which scarcely merits a footnote these days.

Not round my house, Donut.

Soul 2 Soul "Keep on Moving" is an interesting example. Such a huge record over here in UK but also in New York but doesn't really get much light shone on it these days.

Any thoughts on why?

blue, Thursday, 26 February 2004 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, I was bumping Tina Moore 'Never Gonna Let You Go' in the car this very morning!

I'd definitely contest Groove Is In The Heart; it has entered The Canon, and is played at wedding discos to this day. Agree with most the others, though.

People Everyday - Arrested Development
Step It Up - Stereo MC's
The Bomb - The Bucketheads

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 27 February 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and Gypsy Woman - Crystal Waters. Top of every buzz chart when it was on import, but everyone was sick to death of it two months later.
