Zodiac Mindwarp: Classic Or Dud?

So, Mark Stephen Manning and his deranged alter-ego... any good?

I loved 'Bad Wisdom' (for those who don't know- Z and Bill Drummond journey to the North Pole with a cardboard cut-out of Elvis and go in search of The Lost Chord), especially the juxtaposition of BD's arduous farting-on-train monologue with Z's manic pornographic chainsaw wielding insanity... I'm just starting 'Fucked By Rock', which looks also to be absolutely excellent: the guy who lent it to me gave express instructions not to be enticed into copying any of his antics whilst on tour, ha...

Musically, however, I've not really heard much- the brief snippet I heard was awful, and what I've come to expect is something majestically, terrifyingly and amazingly bad. Is this really the case, or will it be something of a letdown?

Since, oh I dunno, whenever, British people have not only forgotten how to sing, but they can't play rock with a straight face either. The only question is why do they try? The Cult and Billy Idol made zillions in America, but they probably didn't realize people were laughing at them even then. Zodiac Bikers on Mopeds or whoever didn't even get world-beating success, which sort of killed the whole point of them. All that being said, 'Whiplash Smile' is one of my fave albums ever, followed closely by 'Rebel Yell'. So, yeah.

Weren't they kind of a "joke" band? I kind of thought the Cult were, too, but not as blatantly.

Yes, kind of a joke band. The problem I have with ZM & The Love Reaction, and with most of Bill Drummond's ideas too, is that I find it pretty hard to work out how much is a joke. The way they talk/write about themselves makes you wonder how much of it is their own insanity and how much is them taking the piss...

Still, never mind about that, fetch me some 15 year old punk rock bitches...

Classic: how can you deny lyrics like "sex fuhrer baby, i'm the love dictator"???

bob, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Or "I'm shooting babies from the end of my dick!" I like him, he was like an 80s biker rawk version of Arthur Brown. He's playing in New York this weekend at the Continental, a tiny dive on 3rd Ave. & St. Mark's Place. I'm sorry I'm missing it.
