Dan The Automator - s&d

Partly inspired by the just-revived Kool Keith thread and partly by hearing a track off his latest/forthcoming (?) LP under the 'Nathaniel Merriweather presents Lovage' moniker, which I thought was pretty good.

People are recommending to me Handsome Boy Modelling School and "Dr Octagonacologist". But is that more down to the collaborators than to Dan himself? And I'm not even going to mention the G word cos we know where that leads to.

So what is the big deal? A search and destroy would be nice too, please.

search this: 'once again' with brand nubian, that buck buck song off 'a better tomorrow' (his greatest beat ever?), '3030' and 'mastermind' off the deltron album, his remix of prince paul's 'beautiful night', that gorillaz track 'rock the house, and TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES.

destroy: blue flowers, the hbms joint with mike d, every track on deltron after 'madness'

to elaborate: the thing about automator is that he's just the poor backpackers's prince paul (funny and melodic and weird without paul's personality or craft), so when he stumbles upon the right sample he's unstoppable but he keeps choosing worse and worse guest artists and grasping at indie rock cred and i'd disown him entirely if not for all the FUCKING UNREAL BEATS he's made. so, get handsome boy modelling school, it's 3/4 great; doc octagon is the most overrated hiphop album of all time but is still a damn good record that most of the underground have been trying to outdo for the past six years; a better tomorrow is slight, you'd be better off mp3ing buck buck and buying a rare de la 12" with your ten bucks. deltron is spotty but it has the tracks i already named plus 'things you can do' and 'madness' and the least-annoying (read: shortest) paul barman song ever. i like the gorillaz record okay too but i've only heard it a few times and can't imagine ever buying it. oh, i forget to mention, search the 'gorillaz' (= automator) remix of 'let's get dirty', it's my favorite redman remix ever hands down. what if erick sermon gave reggie the beat from 'please listen to my demo', and flipped it? buy the import 'smash sumthin' 12" and bear witness. oh, automator, why can't you be more ghetto?

When I was a lot younger, I used to like Automator just because he was Japanese. Notice how many of the collaborators he's bringing in are of Asian descent (Cibo matto, kid koala, Sean Lennon, etc.). I used to think this was cool because I wanted Asians to invade hip hop so that I could launch my secret plan. And then the "Got rice, bitch?" phenomenon happened on napster and I cursed it all to hell.

In my opinion, Automator never carried a fully solid album through. I like pieces of Deltron, Octagon, and HBMS, and A much better Tomorrow is O-K, but none of them really showcase him right. Gorillaz just obscures him further. You can go buy the Deltron instrumentals if you want Automator beats with Del out of the picture.

Oh, and while we're on the topic of Japanese hip hop producers, I must admit I'm a sucker for DJ Krush records. That and I'm not DJ Honda.

i think dan was focusing more on bringing in collaborators of INDIE descent, like all those you named except possibly maybe hopefully koala.

Handsome Boy is superb, and just as good as anyone sez. Check out Deltron 3030 for my fave. beat on "Madness," which is beautiful and menacing.

JM, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Automator is certainly a student of Prince Paul, but, if anything, I always thought he was, if anything, more crafty and individualistic than Paul.

Search: This is predictable, but Dr. Octagon, Handsome Boy Modeling School, AND Deltron 3030 are all very enjoyable, and thoroughly live up to whatever the hype is. There's a few duds on those albums, true, but that's an inevitable by-product in these days of overlong hip-hop CDs. I really like Gorillaz, but it's not in the same league as the above -- Damon Albarn just isn't as interesting as Kool Keith or DEL.

Destroy: Hmm, can't think of much to destroy, but as someone else mentioned, the Mike D track off of Modeling School is rather retarded.

i'm sorry, i can't think of a hiphop album more overlong than deltron. what are these records you refer to that have seem to have prompted an 'era' of such things?

ethan, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

C'mon, Ethan. How about any album 70 minutes or over -- AKA most of the hip-hop albums that are released these days. For my money, the only bad songs on "Deltron 3030" are the little skits, though "Mastermind," "Positive Contact" and "Time Keeps On Slipping," the latter only because it's chorus annoys me to no end.

"If Dirty wants his money, I think y'all should give him his money." I just downloaded this song again; damn, I forgot how much I like ODB. He definitely has one of my favorite rapping voices. Who else has an unabashedly "silly" voice, but's still tight?

Jack Redelfs, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mentally insert ARE EXPENDABLE between

On Slipping," and the latter

Jack Redelfs, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mastermind is the best beat on the album!
