Why do so many people hate 'rap'?

Stupid (Stupid), Friday, 27 February 2004 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

because so many rappers suck at it making it seem a lot easier than it it really should be

earyher, Friday, 27 February 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate anything that appears in those stupid European single quotation marks. Yes, that includes when you say something that someone else said. You shouldn't do that, it's rude.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 27 February 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Not according to most books on style. You *should* use single one. Double ones are called 'French' quotes -- so it isn't 'European' exactly.

I always thought that you were supposed to use double quotes (") for quotations and that single quotes were for quotes within quotes? like

M@tt said, "I overheard Kanye West say, 'Pizza is really yummy.'"

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 27 February 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

That's the US style. In UK, it's reversed, I believe.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 27 February 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

am i the only one here with no idea what's being talked about?

If only I could find a picture of JTWR...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 27 February 2004 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Whatever happened to Mr. Short Khop, Ice Cube's sideman dude? Did he ever have an album out?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 27 February 2004 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

No picture, but I think this passage will do for JTWR:

A passionate characteristic of most rappers, since rapping began, is the fiery jingoism for their ‘block’, their hood, manor, project, ends. Reppin’ for your place of residence goes hand in hand with the whole ‘keeping it real’ ethos, but when you’ve grown up in different parts of the country, moving home every couple of years, then you start rhyming, what the hell do you do?

In John (the White Rapper)’s case, he’s not too overly concerned with all that. He reps for a people. A specific type of people he once was a part of; those individuals constantly accused that they’ll amount to nothing. John’s on a mission to prove they can amount to quite a lot, actually. ‘I grew up in different children’s homes all my life, and all the time I was told I was this, that, a failure…there’s a whole load of stereotypes for people who drop out of school, who don’t work, and the stereotypes comes from ignorance, ignorant fools who think they’re better…I’ve adopted that and flipped it basically, to prove that we can do well for ourselves’.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 27 February 2004 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

oh god. When was that written?

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Friday, 27 February 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Wednesday 22nd October 2003.

Nate, welcome to the world of John The White Rapper. He's as good as his name suggests.

Why do so many people hate 'rap'?

Perhaps they're tired of its cultural ubiquity. I don't hate hip hop at all, but I think, like so many other genres before it, it has reached its highest point and is now on a downward slide. That isn't to suggest that it's going away, but that its most inspired days are behind it.

Same thing happened to Punk Rock.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 27 February 2004 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in NYC, you are so rockist.

Rockist Police, Friday, 27 February 2004 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I like People Under the Stairs.

djdee2005, Friday, 27 February 2004 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

How is what Alex said here rockist? My annoyance with hip-hop now is not very different from my annoyance with rock so often being assumed to be the center of the musical universe in the past (not that that never happens now).

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Friday, 27 February 2004 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in NYC, you are so rockist.

Fetch me hither a bullhorn that I may joyously shout it from the rooftops that all may hear!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 27 February 2004 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I like People Under the Stairs.

Listen to "Quid Control". Then come back and say that.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 27 February 2004 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, your prose style is so Crowleyesque.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Friday, 27 February 2004 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Shouldn't that be Crowlian?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 27 February 2004 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Listen to "The Breakdown" or "Acid Raindrops."

In circles we go...
OST isn't a GREAT album by any means but I certainly think its better than the other stuff you posted up thurr. I mean, they are great producers (and amazing live as well).

Record Congomerates are oversaturating the market with garbage and radio is being pimped. That's essentially why there will be a backlash against rap. The popular rap music, not unlike the 76-79 phase of funk disco/black music, with a few exceptions (Missy comes to mind) is no longer creative/future forward. Lyricism is dead among the mainstrean artists.

METALFACE (METALFACE), Friday, 27 February 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

score one for missy i guess

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 27 February 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, what with their P-Funks and their Rick Jameses and their Brothers Johnson and Slave and Cameo and Off the Wall and Machine and whatnot

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Friday, 27 February 2004 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

(does this make Eminem Giorgio Moroder?)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 27 February 2004 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

anyhoo, how 'bout them Yankees

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Friday, 27 February 2004 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

A-Rod is overrated.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 27 February 2004 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

There are exceptions of course, but on the whole, the output of quality material during that period wasn't nearly as forthcoming as it was in the early 70's. When funk morphed into disco the producers had to make a decision: Create the music that they loved and maintain their integrity or release the over-produced mainstream disco that now makes many folks wretch. (Insert "Theme from Star Wars" here).
