TS: Holding up a Lighter at shows vs. Yelling "Freebird" at shows

Which is more annoying? Lots of lighters at a show I went to last night. Not funny. What is good about this? Nothing. Yelling Freebird at least doesn't last as long.

I am going to say lighters.

What about doing the swaying-arm dance ala the climax in "Purple Rain" during ballads/slow songs? Not funny either.

what about standing more than 5'11" in height at a gig. now those guys really piss me off.

I went to a concert with my mother a couple of weeks ago and we were seated beside a group of drunk women who caroused quite loudly 3/4 of the way through. This was a pretty sedate affair in a soft-seat theatre so it pretty fucking rude. So I leaned over and told the to "Shut the fuck up!"
And they did.
After the concert they came and reproached me for being rude to them, "you could have asked an usher to shush us," and even my mom said "maybe it wasn't the best thing to say," but they shut up and they shut up quick. Any other way would have resulted in an argument or required me to get up out of my seat.
Annoying people should stay at home.

I'm enough of a sucker to still have fond memories of the little night-sky effect caused by thousands of lighters being held aloft at an arena show....

Freebird, on the other hand, is a cliche that should die. One of my favorite musical memories was seeing some bland alt-rock national band play with my friend's band. They were totally boring, until someone yelled "Freebird" and the lead singer stopped the show and said, "I'm going to teach you to be careful what you wish for.".....then the band went into a note-perfect (and extra long guitar solos at the end) version of Freebird.

Maybe you should get to gigs earlier then, shorty.

I'm as God made me, sir.

I've always thought it would be funny if a band played "Freebird" every time it was requested. Because you know, eight or ten minutes later, someone would just call for it again. At which point said band would play "Freebird" a second time, all the way through, and the "Freebird"-requester would get his ass kicked. I like "Freebird," so that would be like getting two treats at once.

I knew someone in school who did a solo acoustic cover of "Freebird." When he got to the "Oh, lord, I can't change part," he just repeated it again and again until someone turned off his mic. Get it?

I'd like to go to a show and yell "free bird!" and be walking around with a bird in a cage .. kind of like yelling "albatross!"

I'll take the lighter. It's quieter and allows for better witty stage panter (usually).

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 27 February 2004 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

(Not that lighters will be legal in clubs and concerts anymore, the way things are going)

There are rare situations where a lighter OK, but yelling "Freebird!!" is never appropriate under ANY circumstances. Lighter it is.

yelling "Freebird!!" is never appropriate under ANY circumstances... even at a lynard skynard concert. I don't mind the lighters, but holding up your cell phone with the backlight on is extremely annoying.

If I'm on stage, I wince inwardly much harder at the Freebird thing.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 27 February 2004 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Yelling 'Freebird" is only acceptable if the band is not Skynyrd, however, i think the best thing would be if the band then improvised their own very annoying composition & called it "Freebird."

Not anymore it isn't. C'mon. How old is that gag? It's like walking around making Python allusions.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 27 February 2004 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

How did the freebird thing start, anyways?

Sym (shmuel), Friday, 27 February 2004 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Lynrd Skynrd live album, I'm-a guessin'.

"now what song is it you wanna hear?"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 27 February 2004 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

But how did it spread to every show by every band?

Sym (shmuel), Friday, 27 February 2004 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Because stupidity moves with the stealth of a young giselle.
