They play it almost every day on the college station run by robots instead of college students.

It's guitar pop/rock, sounds 90s, sounds American but not sure, female singer saying "Don't do that, don't do-oo-oo that!"

It's driving me nuts.

Shania Twain, "Whatever you do! Don't!"

Seriously now.

five years pass...

is it the parody of Marge Simpson on that episode of the Simpsons where she wants to end television violence?

seven months pass...

Identify these 68 songs that hit #1 on the Modern Rock chart in the '90s.

Lusty Mo Frazier (jaymc), Monday, 15 February 2010 14:00 (sixteen years ago)

42 out of 68...Where are my lovely parting gifts? I knew every one them by sound but couldn't recall the exact titles for a lot of them.

Sometimes a pie is just a pie (KMS), Monday, 15 February 2010 18:01 (sixteen years ago)

Nice work. Yeah, some of those titles are tricky.

Lusty Mo Frazier (jaymc), Monday, 15 February 2010 18:06 (sixteen years ago)

49 and kinda ashamed that i got that primitive radio gods song

Fetchboy, Monday, 15 February 2010 18:21 (sixteen years ago)

I knew every one them by sound but couldn't recall the exact titles for a lot of them.

Yeah, I'd have scored a whole lot better by artist instead of title. Thanks jaymc, that was my youth there, and I still barely scored half...

(Was fully expecting "Cannonball" and "Seether", did they miss #1 or were they too obvious?)

(Haha that Primitive Radio Gods song was the first CD single I bought, had for some reason avoided singles but went crazy at a 5-for-cheap deal and bought generic mid-nineties classics such as that, "Natural One", the Frank Black song that rhymes "gravity" with "my heart is just a muscle in a cavity", and a Prong single which wasn't "Snap Your Fingers". No idea what the other one was now. lol 90s)

boing boom love tshak (a passing spacecadet), Monday, 15 February 2010 19:41 (sixteen years ago)

63/68 - dunno if I should be proud or ashamed

Forgot the titles of the Foos & Tears for Fears tracks & rightfully forgot all about the likes of Dishwalla, Eve 6 & Lit.

Nice work, jaymc. If there's one thing I need, it's more workday distraction..

Generation gap. I knew all the songs from Pets onwards but could only identified 8 from the first column :P

Moka, Monday, 15 February 2010 20:26 (sixteen years ago)

they are arranged by date right?

Moka, Monday, 15 February 2010 20:27 (sixteen years ago)

Hah. Got most of them, but only knew the name of one of the 4 Jane's Addiction songs. And then saw the one-per-artist disclaimer...

glenn mcdonald, Monday, 15 February 2010 21:19 (sixteen years ago)

23/68. not very impressive but in my defense i'm pretty certain a lot of these were never even played outside the us...

sonderangerbot, Monday, 15 February 2010 21:42 (sixteen years ago)

great quiz! i only got a shameful 53/68 because i kept getting hung up on like "What the fuck was that Eve 6 song called" and "Why won't this accept 'Isis' for the Goo Goo Dolls song"

Nagl Nagl Nagl (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 15 February 2010 21:58 (sixteen years ago)

(Was fully expecting "Cannonball" and "Seether", did they miss #1 or were they too obvious?)

Both missed #1.

they are arranged by date right?

Yep.

Lusty Mo Frazier (jaymc), Monday, 15 February 2010 22:06 (sixteen years ago)

Glad you guys liked the quiz, btw. It was pretty fun to put together. Would've used more songs, but I wanted to have approximately the same number of songs per year and by 1998-99, there were fewer than 10 songs that hit #1. Plus, I didn't want to repeat artists. Plus, I didn't want to download fucking Marcy Playground.

Lusty Mo Frazier (jaymc), Monday, 15 February 2010 22:19 (sixteen years ago)

Why would you? You probably know it by heart.

Inculcate a spirit of serfdom in children (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 15 February 2010 22:23 (sixteen years ago)

"Sex & Candy" is better than prob 60-70% of the other tracks imo.

your quizzes are the best

Nagl Nagl Nagl (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 15 February 2010 22:29 (sixteen years ago)

I am proud of my 38/68 becase all of this happened when I was between the ages of 3 and 13. Also I got the last 18 right. Actually I knew all but five of the last 35 or so.

27/68 and those were like my golden days of radio. But I guess I kept thinking songs were more popular than they were. I really thought "Interstate Love Song" and "Under the Bridge" would have been #1s, never thought to guess "Scar Tissue".

Oh well, proud of myself for pulling "Counting Blue Cars" out of my ass.

you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 15 February 2010 23:29 (sixteen years ago)

Also I have been searching for the name of Big Audio Dynamite's "Rush" for the past 6 months; I only knew the music (and none of the lyrics except "situation") and I thought it was the Clash

Also I have been searching for the name of Big Audio Dynamite's "Rush" for the past 6 months - ILX could have solved this dilemma for you in under 30 seconds.

Man or Austro-Hungarian? (Pillbox), Monday, 15 February 2010 23:36 (sixteen years ago)

Well, you were close -- it's Mick Jones's post-Clash band.

Lusty Mo Frazier (jaymc), Monday, 15 February 2010 23:36 (sixteen years ago)

I really thought "Interstate Love Song" and "Under the Bridge" would have been #1s, never thought to guess "Scar Tissue".

Wait, did you not listen to the clips?

Lusty Mo Frazier (jaymc), Monday, 15 February 2010 23:37 (sixteen years ago)

It is strange that STP never had a #1 Modern Rock song, though.

Lusty Mo Frazier (jaymc), Monday, 15 February 2010 23:38 (sixteen years ago)

Hahaha, I didn't see there were clips! Mine were all from memory.

you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 15 February 2010 23:42 (sixteen years ago)

That's actually pretty impressive then!

Lusty Mo Frazier (jaymc), Monday, 15 February 2010 23:44 (sixteen years ago)

Wow, I feel lots better.

you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 15 February 2010 23:45 (sixteen years ago)

36/68, fairly bad. i knew another 10 of the artists but not the titles. the only one i'm kicking myself over is novocaine for the soul, which for some inexplicable reason i thought was feeder.

twice remembered / twice removed (electricsound), Monday, 15 February 2010 23:48 (sixteen years ago)

xp Yeah, it's not a comprehensive list, either. Only about half of the #1s from the '90s.

Lusty Mo Frazier (jaymc), Monday, 15 February 2010 23:51 (sixteen years ago)

Nice quiz either way, I'll be sure to pay attention for the clues next time!

you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 15 February 2010 23:53 (sixteen years ago)

jaymc could you do a list of the songs that peaked at #2? How many more/less are there? I mean I assume that a great majority of songs that go #2 eventually go #1

Use a computer to superimpose your head over that of Bronson Pinchot (Stevie D), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 01:18 (sixteen years ago)

Good question, but it would take a lot more research. This is what I used for the quiz, but it only shows #1s.

Lusty Mo Frazier (jaymc), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 01:22 (sixteen years ago)

okay this is awesome and hilarious and i am lol old i guess

55/68

damn if i could remember the title of "That Primitive Radio Gods Song" under pressure
