Flip side of another thread. Easy for me, Matos. He is probably glad of it too.

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Saturday, 28 February 2004 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

you know, i'm not sure if there's an ilxor i dont share some bit of taste with.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 28 February 2004 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

nickalious.

I would bet money that i am not only person to think this.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 28 February 2004 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

that's really odd considering how much stuff I like, Jim.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Saturday, 28 February 2004 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

if we're talking ideology of listening then that's a whoooole different kettle of fishies

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 28 February 2004 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

unless all you listen to is new age and death metal or something

strongo xpost and otm

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Saturday, 28 February 2004 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd guess Julio.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 28 February 2004 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, and I'll say Phil Freeman by a mile

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Saturday, 28 February 2004 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

EASY !!!!!! = DJ MARTIAN

I love his blog, but he doesn't seem to be a big fan of black music
which would cut out way more than half my taste

Paul (scifisoul), Saturday, 28 February 2004 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

scott seward//roger adultery//ned

i would guess.

Ian Johnson (orion), Saturday, 28 February 2004 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Sundar.

maypang (maypang), Saturday, 28 February 2004 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

nevermind, i posted this to the wrong thread.

Ian Johnson (orion), Saturday, 28 February 2004 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

and anyone who thinks older music is better, more revolutionary, more pure, more holy than new music (Hongro, etc)

Paul (scifisoul), Saturday, 28 February 2004 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I don't care for that stuff at all Matos. I bet I would be on Paul's list too.

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Saturday, 28 February 2004 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir, definitely.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 28 February 2004 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

for the latter reason? huh. that's just weird, considering how much older music I like. but if you say so.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Saturday, 28 February 2004 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony Miccio, easy.

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 28 February 2004 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I wanna say Geir but there's the XTC / Super Furry Animals connection we have, so I guess I'll just say strongo OTM in 1st post

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Saturday, 28 February 2004 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

No I meant I don't like New Age or Death Metal nor a lot of later day Black music.

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Saturday, 28 February 2004 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

no, I got it.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Saturday, 28 February 2004 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Freeman, Miccio, Alex in NYC. (Nothing to do with the stuff they do like -- just the stuff they don't.)

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Saturday, 28 February 2004 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

esoj, apart from some obvious shared tastes. weird cos he's maybe my favourite poster here.

mullygrubber (gaz), Saturday, 28 February 2004 06:16 (twenty-two years ago)

esoj's tastes are startlingly diverse. And also he's sort of even handed and open minded, rare to criticize anything - hallmark of a talented musician, I suspect. Yeah, he's f***ed.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Saturday, 28 February 2004 06:24 (twenty-two years ago)

miccio, easily.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 28 February 2004 06:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I differ a lot from some of the people that are gung ho about all that (boring) dance music and Siegbran (at least the metal side of his tastes, but I bet I could really get into tons of metal if I just put a little effort into looking up whats good and getting it.)

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 28 February 2004 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

and to answer the question properly, everyone who's into DANCE.

Ian Johnson (orion), Saturday, 28 February 2004 06:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i used to like a lot of death metal, but i've been WAY out of that loop for the longest time. not to mention that my death-metal tastes tend more towards the cartoonish and goth side of the spectrum (like carcass, cannibal corpse, and cradle of filth) as well as stuff that's closer to grindcore than black metal or anything even vaguely burzum/dimmu borgir-esque.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 28 February 2004 06:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Chuck Eddy -- a few quotes of his on these boards made me think we would not enjoy trading iPods or DVD collections at any point (he likes Northern State (but hates Fugazi), says Dave Grohl is a bad drummer, thinks Kid Rock is interesting, and hates David Cross, for starters -- I'm sure there's more). He's who came to mind pretty fast.
That said, I bet it would be fun to have some drinks with him and talk shit about all this stuff.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Saturday, 28 February 2004 06:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Some of the mp3s that I've gotten off of people recommendations here (I forget exactly what) turned out to dance tracks the were also awful.

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 28 February 2004 06:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i like the way that mr. eddy THINKS and EXPLAINS why he likes what he likes. plus i have a kinda kneejerk appreciation for those who stick up for the downtrodden -- and what form of music is more downtrodden these days than eighties poodle-metal or seventies/early 80s buttrock?

that still doesn't mean that i'm gonna run out and buy those loverboy or kixx cds in any bargain bins, no sirree.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 28 February 2004 07:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I have huge respect for Chuck, and he writes and illustrates his opinions succintly and with true style and eloquence. But sometimes he's just slinging such an inexplicable stack of crap that I have to sit down and take couple of aspirins, as the sheer, staggering stench of bullshit makes me light-headed.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 28 February 2004 07:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i like the way that mr. eddy THINKS and EXPLAINS

I think you just like his words in ALL CAPS.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Saturday, 28 February 2004 07:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Noone (because there's always an overlap)/Everyone (the way they listen differs from mine... maybe)

nathalie (nathalie), Saturday, 28 February 2004 08:15 (twenty-two years ago)

My first thought was Jess, because he's into tons of stuff I haven't even heard of, and don't know that I'd be that crazy about, but then I remembered he likes Tortoise and Talk Talk, which are sort of paradigmatic for me.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 28 February 2004 08:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in NYC, probably, and maybe Julio a little.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 28 February 2004 08:43 (twenty-two years ago)

...which is odd, as Julio (free jazz, bad pop) and I have polar tastes ourselves.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 28 February 2004 08:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Aye, and I'm in the middle!

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 28 February 2004 08:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Liking neither improv nor Killing Joke!

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 28 February 2004 08:45 (twenty-two years ago)

that Geir Hongo cat.

angel duster, Saturday, 28 February 2004 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

There's kind of a whole bunch of people who seem to be predominantly into noisy American underground stuff which holds very little interest for me (OK I have and like a Lightning Bolt album but thats as far as it goes), so probably Jon Williams or somebody like that.

Or Aja!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Saturday, 28 February 2004 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, on some thread I was dubbed "anti-Geir", so the answer is rather obvious... I couldn't care less about melody in music, to me it's all rhythm & sound.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 28 February 2004 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 28 February 2004 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, if you subtract everyone from my who has the most in common ... its fair to say all of ilx have the least in common.

jimmy the doomed saint, Saturday, 28 February 2004 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

there are loads I've nothing in common with I'd say.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 28 February 2004 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Probably Geir but at least he likes Yes. I love the Beatles too but he seems to like them for all the wrong reasons. And he doesn't like "Mother Nature's Son"! I don't know much about may pang other than that he loves Belle and Sebastian and turns off Brave New Waves after they finish interviewing indie bands so I'll take his word. I did really like the stuff he said about lyricists on the other thread though. And, though I don't let on much, I do really like some Dylan. Kate loves indie pop, likes 80s synthpop, hates jazz and rap, and doesn't seem to care for the electronic avant-garde very much so points for her too. Major points can be awarded for all these common ILM qualities:

- love for any of: ABBA, 80s new wave/synthpop/4AD, indie pop/slowcore
- hate for any of: guitar solos, hard/prog rock, classical, jazz, funk, fusion, IDM, improv, North American AOR cheese

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 28 February 2004 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, I add sundar to my list

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Saturday, 28 February 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

you don't like guitar solos amd AOR cheese sundar? I'm confused.

I dunno who I have least in common with, possibly people like Ronan.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 28 February 2004 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

No, the point was that anyone who has those qualities (e.g. hates guitar solos and loves 80s synthpop) has very dissimilar tastes to mine. i.e. I hate ABBA, most 80s new wave, indie pop and I love guitar solos, hard/prog rock, classical, jazz, funk, fusion, IDM, improv, North American AOR cheese.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 28 February 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

(Did people actually think I was declaring my love for ABBA and 4AD and my hatred for classical, jazz, rock, and funk?)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 28 February 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, I see the confusion: "major points" = "major dissimilarity points". I don't know which way Nate understood my post but at least he seems to like Led Zeppelin, Funkadelic, and Outkast. Blackalicious too?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 28 February 2004 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

D'oh! Yeah, now I see whatcha mean. I like Blackalicious and stuff, yeah. I do like some synthpop too tho (just bought the 7" of "Don't You Want Me". And Roger Powell's Cosmic Furnace).

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Saturday, 28 February 2004 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know much about may pang other than that he loves Belle and Sebastian

Just to set the record straight here, I definitely do not love Belle and Seastian. I cringed when I read that. I mean sure.. I like a few of their songs, but who doesn't?

And actually Sundar, if there's one thing that you and I share in common (that I've found so far) it's that we both own at least one album by Kenneth Gaburo. Of course you probably listen to yours.

maypang (maypang), Saturday, 28 February 2004 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I like a few of their songs, but who doesn't?

*whistles idly*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 28 February 2004 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't been around long enough to really know, so I'll just echo the comments by Strongo and Begs2 and leave it at that.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

probably the indie guilters (they know who they are).

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 28 February 2004 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought they were but a chimera? a rhetorical device? a straw man?

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 28 February 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey may pang, you didn't tell me you were an REM fan before. That's one more piece of common ground, at least up to Monster. (Actually I heard Up once and liked it.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 29 February 2004 07:56 (twenty-two years ago)

they are only pretending to be indie guilters

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 29 February 2004 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

All that guilters is not, uhm. . .

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Sunday, 29 February 2004 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Lord Custos.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 1 March 2004 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir doesn't like "Mother Nature's Son"? Surely it's one of the most "purely" "melodic" Beatles songs? Ah well, Hongro logic I suppose ...

robin carmody (robin carmody), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

EASY !!!!!! = DJ MARTIAN

Paul scifisoul you old plank I rate King's X!!!

Andy K as DJ Martian (Andy K), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Martian I love you.

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone who talks a lot about dancehall and R&B.

BICICLETA EMOCIONAL!!! (Jon Williams) (ex machina), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

yer fergot the rott'en

Drunk Paul (scifisoul), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

"Mother Nature's Son" = cod-folk = anti-tecnhology = anti-prog = Geir hates it for being 'unsophisticated', maybe?

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 1 March 2004 08:17 (twenty-two years ago)

plus i have a kinda kneejerk appreciation for those who stick up for the downtrodden -- and what form of music is more downtrodden these days than eighties poodle-metal or seventies/early 80s buttrock?

I suppose this could be kind of true in the Real World (tho much less so than it was like seven years ago, I'm pretty sure), but dude, on ILX?

Also I think that many of the ppl chooosing Miccio and Geir are thinking of caricatures of their music taste (OMG HE LIKES GOOD CHARLOTTE/LIMP BIZKIT/CROWDED HOUSE/GENESIS I'D TOTALLY NEVER LISTEN TO THAT!) as opposed to their actual listening habits, which include tons of canon-based stuff that most ppl like.
