Can We Talk About Cherry Coloured Funk?

Because, me, I like my dance-oriented R&B sort of maroon. What a fucking gorgeous song...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Saturday, 28 February 2004 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes

Lynskey (Lynskey), Saturday, 28 February 2004 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah it is a beautiful song, it sounds like a sexy urban Hong Kong gangster film moment, shame it also is the Twins' most tasteless moment (title = menstruation metaphor).

Le Coq, Saturday, 28 February 2004 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Flawless.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 28 February 2004 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never liked Heaven Or Las Vegas ("Road River & Rail" excepted) as much as Blue Bell Knoll. maybe cos of the simpler rhythms - it's as if they couldn't play basic funk as easy as those 6/8 spectacles. Heaven sounds a bit of a comedown after the high-flying exhilaration of Blue Bell Knoll.

on the other hand, maybe it's cos I have the UK vinyl of the earlier album and the (less well pressed?) U.S. of Heaven
"Cherry Coloured Funk" is definitely tuneful

I like b-sides "Mizake The Mizan" & "Watchlar" more than most of what's on the album though

Paul (scifisoul), Saturday, 28 February 2004 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

re: Watchlar

Timex is coming out with a new product by that name for the goth demographic (keep it on the DL please).

Le Coq, Saturday, 28 February 2004 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

shame it also is the Twins' most tasteless moment (title = menstruation metaphor).

Didn't know that, but why would that be tasteless?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Saturday, 28 February 2004 05:30 (twenty-two years ago)

(title = menstruation metaphor)

You have issues.

ISSUES! DO YOU SEE?! sorry.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Saturday, 28 February 2004 05:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Moreover,

Beetles and eggs and blues and pour a little everything else
You steam a lens stable eyes and glass
Not get pissed off through my bird lips as good news
Still we can find our love down from behind
Down far behind this fabulous, my turn rules
Beetles and eggs and blues and bells and eggs and then blued
Beetles and eggs and blues and pour a little everything else
You steam a lens stable eyes and glass
Not get pissed off through my bird lips as good news
You'll hang the hearts black and dull as the night
We hanged your pass and start being as you in ecstasty
Still being cried and laughed at before
Should I be sewn in hugged I can by not saying
Still being cried and laughed at from light to blue
And should I be hugged and tugged down through this tiger's masque
And should I be sung and unbroken by not saying
You mind not saying
He'll hang that heart's black and dull as the night
Still being cried and laughed at from behind me, from gains
We hanged your pass and star being as you in ecstasy
Still being cried and laughed at from behind me, from gains
Should I be sung and unbroken by not saying
Still being cried and laughed at from behind me, from gains
Hugged and tugged down through this tiger's masque for key

Call me dense, but I'm not catching the metaphor here...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Saturday, 28 February 2004 05:41 (twenty-two years ago)

To me it is the most beautiful Cocteau Twins song. I hate the title though.

daavid (daavid), Saturday, 28 February 2004 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that your guess on the lyrics, Naive? I thought the Twins never revealed their lyrics.

daavid (daavid), Saturday, 28 February 2004 05:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i always thought the title was more about being in a rut (or funk), and thought the music complemented it perfectly.

umop apisdn (umop apisdn), Saturday, 28 February 2004 05:56 (twenty-two years ago)

You'll all end up in straight-jackets if you spend too much time trying to unlock the Cocteaus' enigma. Sometimes a Cherry Coloured Funk is just a Cherry Coloured Funk.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 28 February 2004 06:05 (twenty-two years ago)

too true. sure is fun to try and sing along to though.

umop apisdn (umop apisdn), Saturday, 28 February 2004 06:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that your guess on the lyrics, Naive? I thought the Twins never revealed their lyrics.

God, no. If that were my handiwork, I'd all be a little frightened if I were you. Actually, I cribbed those off some website -- dunno if they're official, but the same ones are on a few diff. pages. My recollection is that she started singing real lyrics around HOLV, though...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Saturday, 28 February 2004 06:25 (twenty-two years ago)

incredible song, and also my favourite Twins album. It was also my first, which definitely colours things. BBK never quite worked as well for me as an album. Points for the b-sides, which are splendid as well, particularily Watchlar.

Beautiful cover art, also.

The Mark Clifford remix on "Otherness" is even better, although it's a comparison between gold and diamonds.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I think everything's already been said that could be said. So hey. My brief AMG take from the album review: on "Cherry-Coloured Funk," Guthrie's inimitable guitar work chimes, leading a low-key but forceful rhythm, while Raymonde's grand bass work fleshes it out. Fraser simply captivates; her vocals are the clearest, most direct they've ever been, purring with energy and life.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the Clifford mix quite a bit, too (where the hell is he, anyway?). But as you point out, it's not really the same song anymore...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i prefer "Iceblink Luck"

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Gorgeous.

stevo (stevo), Thursday, 4 March 2004 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Following my starting of this thread, I must've listened to the song about 30 times over...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 4 March 2004 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a really gorgeous Seefeel remix of this. sadly my copy of H&LV has been in Dunedin since 02, sigh.

etc, Friday, 5 March 2004 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

= Mark Clifford of Seefeel

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 5 March 2004 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

His mix of "Feet Like Fins" stops time.

Has anyone explored the Faye Wong connection thoroughly? HK diva, most UK/US-ers saw her star Chungking Express? I just uncovered this whole cross-pollination recently. She covered "Bluebeard", "Know Who You are at Every Age" and "Rilkean Heart", sang on "Serpentskirt" for the Asian version of Milk + Kisses, and Robin gave her a few original songs in the late 90s.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Friday, 5 March 2004 05:57 (twenty-two years ago)

You'll all end up in straight-jackets if you spend too much time trying to unlock the Cocteaus' enigma

Alex is, of course, quite correct. Nevertheless 20 years on, suddenly realising that one of my v. favourite Cocteau Twins tracks, 'Pearly-Dewdrop's Drop', may be actually about semen..... blimey.

stevo (stevo), Sunday, 7 March 2004 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the Cocteaus but have never heard this song -- I don't think I could bring myself to listen to a song with such a punchable title. I hate it so much it makes me want never to listen to them again! I have an unreasonable fear of this period of theirs, anyway -- I like my Cocteaus as post-punk as possible, and this seems to veer to closely into Enya territory. Not that I've heard any of it.

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Sunday, 7 March 2004 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

You haven't heard Heaven or Las Vegas at all? I disown you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 7 March 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Besides, it ain't nothing like Enya.

Interesting about Pearly Dewdrops Drop. All the talk about possible sexual inferences makes me remember the Milk n' Kisses-era interviews Liz gave where she talked about being sexually abused as a kid. Might take away from some of the blissful imagery some (if not a lot), but also informs it quite a bit...

I'm with Ott, btw -- Clifford's mix of "Feet Like Fins" is The One.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 8 March 2004 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

haha borders is now selling heaven or las vegas for 75% off the list price (which puts it about $3), so anyone who's never heard it should really go.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 March 2004 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Probably my most uplifting Cocteaus song, it makes me happy.

Leee the Lee (Leee), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt, I'm never going to be able to listen to "Pearly Dew Drops' Drops" without crying now. Never knew that.

Anyone curious can read a long-ish interview I did with Simon in 1997 at the short-lived Dopodomani; the site runs as a Flash popup, my interview is in the Sound section.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

"Pearly Dew Drops Drop"? About Jizz? You slackjawed cretins!!!!!

I dunno....I don't buy it. To my mind, the Cocteaus are from a realm where things like defecation, urination, ejaculation and other sundry bodily functions don't play a part. All is misty and ethereal. They don't walk so much as glide up a stair composed of blooming marigolds and baby's breath. The gooey, embarassing and mortal trappings of this sorry world do not apply to them (or at least not to Liz. Robin, however, looks well acquainted with all things gooey....especially the filling of Twinkies and jelly donuts.)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, that was touching. I can only imagine the drugs you were on at Volume the other night.
