why is this suddenly an amazing song to me? it always seems to come on over the system at my restaurant and it always prevent me from giving good service because it is entrancing. CLASSIC.

it's a great song

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 28 February 2004 08:37 (twenty-two years ago)

My wife LOVES this song and insists that it be on every single car mix CD I make.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Saturday, 28 February 2004 08:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Great single, yeah. How can anyone deny it? Her voice was pretty impressive, especially in the end bit. I also liked the the slowly chugging guitars under the verses.

Ever hear fellow Bostonites GangGreen's version of it?

What I like to do whenever I listen to this song:

Remember that lengthy instrumental bit sorta towards the near end of the song? Remember how that bit was peppered with melodramatic dialogue in the accompanying music video? I like to recite it, spaced out as close to the real piece was.

"So, practice run late? You know, this little hobby of yours has gone too far. Why can't you for once do something for me?"

"Like what?"

"OH!...."

For that and for about a half billion other reasons, this song is truly, truly classic.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 28 February 2004 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Sympathizing with Aimee Mann's boyfriend in the "Voices Carry" video - C or D?

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 28 February 2004 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic. Amazing chorus hook..

anode (anode), Saturday, 28 February 2004 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh man! I never knew that the chick from Til Tuesday was Aimee Mann! It's weird how things slip by a person sometimes.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Saturday, 28 February 2004 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

aimee mann has done some really nice stuff in her solo career, and some really boring stuff too. none of it has come close to this, though. i think that crazy new wave hairdo was the source of her strength. classic.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Saturday, 28 February 2004 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember hearing that this song was about Al Jourgensen. I think he had a point.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Saturday, 28 February 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Hm!

I’m in the dark,
I’d like to read his mind but I’m frightened of the things I might find
Oh, there must be something he’s thinking of
to tear him away when I tell him that I’m falling in love
why does he say
hush hush
keep it down now
voices carry
I try so hard not to get upset
because I know all the trouble I’ll get
oh, he tells me tears are something to hide
and something to fear
and I try so hard to keep it inside
so no one can hear
hush hush
keep it down now
voices carry
He wants me but only part of the time
He wants me if he can keep me in line
hush hush
keep it down now
voices carry
hush hush,
darling,
she might overhear oh, no-
voices carry
he said shut up
he said shut up
oh God can’t you keep it down
voices carry
I wish he would let me talk.

I'm just amused at the idea of Al telling anyone to be quiet. "You're disturbing my fragile sense of silence!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 28 February 2004 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow. Never heard that rumour. Didn't she eventually end up with Michael Penn? That's quite a leap, if so (from Al to Penn).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Jules Shear is in the Aimee Mann boyfriend bunch as well. I heard she practically disowns this song, which is just sad. CLASSIC.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I forgot about the "Voices Carry" video.. is it as melodramatic as Ministry's "Revenge" video?

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 29 February 2004 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Just barely.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Sunday, 29 February 2004 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think she disowns this since she played it when I saw her two years ago (rearranged a bit, but still amazing). This song is beyond classic, really, and it took her a while to match it.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Sunday, 29 February 2004 06:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Song is great, but that album sucks. The second one is half-good, and the third is amazing.

John 2, Sunday, 29 February 2004 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I never knew this song was abour being the other woman. Sad, I have heard this track like 10,000,000 times and never caught the end bit of the lyric.

John 2 smokes a giant crack pipe. The first Til Tuesday album is beyond classic. It's one of the best new wave debut albums EVAR. At least half the songs are as classic as Voices Carry and the rest are worth hearing too. Come on!! I just started loving this album. Does anybody else share this appreciation? Why are there so few Til Tuesday threads on ILM. This album kicks ass!! The second one only has a few good songs (the ones with synths), the third is- meh. They are classic because of synths dammit!

-rainbow bum- (-rainbow bum-), Sunday, 20 February 2005 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

oh god can't you keep it DOWN?!?

damn, can't believe a VMA-winning music video from 1985 hasn't held up as a film, RIP

jaz a make wardance (some dude), Sunday, 30 September 2012 13:32 (thirteen years ago)

I somehow managed to miss it entirely in the '80s. She's got a parody video out now, which just seems gratuitous.

Yes, she later played a German nihilist in The Big Lebowski

prefer "What About Love."

taking tiger mountain (up the butt) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 30 September 2012 14:57 (thirteen years ago)

What About Love is great. Coming Up Close is even better, but I don't even think it was a single.

Had never heard of this song until I moved to the US and went to this 'ladies of the 80s' night and they played this and everyone went crazy.

k i'll be nice

jaz a make wardance (some dude), Sunday, 30 September 2012 17:47 (thirteen years ago)

There's stiff competition elsewhere (though not from the new one I'm afraid) but Welcome Home might be my fave Aimee Mann record overall.
