Once more unto the breach of stuff. Your song awaits.

It seems like some kind of old calypso track, right down to the production, but then it throws on that electric guitar, which made me think it was a Super Furry Animals' song with a guest vocalist. Also, my first impression was that it was techno because the opening guitar lines echo perfectly to a rhythm. It was okay, a little boring.

This song starts with this weirdo guy screaming and than that ridicoulous laugh(cof, when the cavaquinho and the cheesy guitar enters you realise thats definetely some samba-rock or samba-soul made on the 60's or 70's since this shit is very popular right now The music is quite good, but that guitar is awful and the guy sings very strangely. I just realized it can be Arnaldo Baptista, but it doesnt sound like the mutantes. But its still good and has absolutely NOTHING to do with techno

I have a sneaking suspicion I've heard this recently. Ah Yes I know. Can I reveal who it is?

Daniel, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

no!

m jemmeson, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ignore that last posting. Of course you don't want me to just say who it is. It's not a bloody quiz, after all.

It's a really fine track, isn't it? Arnaldo Batista? I think it was written by Jorge Ben. I shall say no more.

Daniel, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I get it Daniel, im almost sure who it is i just didnt discovered because i have never listened to one their songs before.

The first singer voice may sound for me like arnaldo baptista

victor campos, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Some people have no patience. Sheesh.

Personally, I think this track is great - the over-amped garage guitar (shades of _Revolution_), the acoustic plinking that begins the song, the echoed voice, the Latin rhythm, every single bop bop shooby dooby doo wah. Yes, I learned about them via that movement mentioned by Victor (though by "shit", I'm assuming he means "stuff"). But, yeah, it's good.

AND STOP DROPPING HINTS.

David Raposa, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, i really like the guitar. admittedly have been listening to 60s garage bands (Sonics etc) this morning, which is not my usual territory, so am in mood for that fuzz sound. halfway through i started to think it sounded a bit Country-ish. need to listen again, though, once the office is quiet

m jemmeson, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have nothing to say but: terrific. Those harmonies, in particular! I see where the Baptista reference comes from -- that sort of harmony is all over Divina Comedia ou Ando Meio Desligado -- but I'm not sure how much it extended to the rest of the scene as well. . . .

Nitsuh, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh! ooh! i know what it is! and it fucking rocks!!!

your null fame, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That is actually rather interesting stuff. Usually I do not like any Latin American stuff but this mixture of many different styles and instruments which is a little like a potpourri or a parody in places works quite well. This "Babachuba" in between the Spanish singing makes me laugh. Quite strange but good.

alex in mainhattan, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Have this one and it is wonderful.

Mark, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This song is wonderful and so is the band!

scott p., Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

since I loaded it and almost everyone seems to know anyway - Os Mutantes 'A Minha Menina' from their first album.

philT, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

NO HINTS! ;)

David Raposa, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

gah! there goes the 'wait a week before posting the answer' rule...

m jemmeson, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i really love brazilian 60's stuff, but this is a tiny bit too ironic for my taste. [this is good]

krisinho, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just got tons of Os Mutantes. I love their version of the Gal COsta hit BABY

Mike Hanle y, Saturday, 13 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Meh. I neither actively dislike it, nor would feel especially compelled to seek it out. The fuzz guitar line doesn't work for me, especially at the beginning. It's good-natured, but not especially engaging.

Phil, Saturday, 13 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hmmm, sorry about posting the answer so soon - I didn't read the rather obvious fine print. It's the fuzz guitar that does it for me and the nice melding of psych-pop with Brazilian-pop.

philT, Saturday, 13 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Would sound better on a film soundtrack than a dancefloor. I like it too, but then I knew I did.

Tom, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So THAT'S what they sound like. Thanks philT. Another triumph for the Listening Post concept too.

Jeff, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yo, Phil. Why'd you choose this song?
