S/D: Rappers praising crappy movies

Inspired by the Erin Brokovitch Method Man reference Al brought up and the sudden realization that there is a VANILLA SKY reference in "Through The Wire" and nobody has acknowledged it on ILX (if my searching skills haven't failed me). Nas is all about Casino and I'll never forgive Pharrell, Busta and Puffy for making a homage to HARLEM NIGHTS (implying that Harlem Nights is a film worth renting should be considered a terrorist act). I ain't going with any of these folks to Blockbuster ever. Your faves?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

since when is Casino a crappy movie? Those who think it's a Goodfellas retread are mistaken. That movie is sublime in every way.

samm, Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

On the Arsonists' second album (that's the shitty one, not the good one), we're treated to "You hollow, man, Kevin Bacon".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh how is Kanye "praising" Vanilla Sky as a movie?

djdee2005, Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

by acknowledging its existence and comparing himself to the lead character.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

no rapper should be announcing that he saw Vanilla Sky

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

you conveniently left out the reference to unbreakable anthony!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

well I didn't notice the line but yeah, I really dig that movie. And FUCK casino.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

you need to re-think your priorities sir

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I am reassured to know that Miccio can be spectacularly wrong about things other than music

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Miccio, you know why he referenced Vanilla Sky, right?

djdee2005, Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

it was televised!

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh dude she was afraid he looked like tom cruise in vanilla sky (when his face gets fucked up). Its a clever reference, not an endorsement.

djdee2005, Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

NO RAPPER SHOULD ACKNOWLEDGE THE EXISTENCE OF VANILLA SKY. why are you making me repeat myself?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

If he had said his girl wants to ride a boat like in Captain Ron I'd have the same reaction

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, you like Shatter-resistant, er, Unbreakable?

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

up until the "what happened after" text at the end, which was supposedly added after focus group bitched.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

"after focus group bitched"

co-inki-dink?

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Saturday, 28 February 2004 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

tangential but MF Doom namechecks Neelix and Kes from Star Trek: Voyager in the Viktor Vaughn album. yeahhh.......

ryan kuo (ryan kuo), Saturday, 28 February 2004 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

jay-z sure loves him some deuce bigalow.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 28 February 2004 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Nighthawk: The Concept Album

Sym (shmuel), Saturday, 28 February 2004 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

"COMMANDER picard"

tom west (thomp), Saturday, 28 February 2004 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

in that song I have from viktor vaughn mf doom also makes a reference to silent bob, which is so much worse than mentioning vanilla sky

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 29 February 2004 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Once you said you liked Unbreakable, Anthony, I realized, oh yeah, you just have a really bad taste in movies.

David Allen (David Allen), Sunday, 29 February 2004 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Unbreakable's not bad, but really only needs to be seen once.

Casino's better than Goodfellas. There, I said it!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 29 February 2004 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

unbreakable maybe has the worst ending of any movie i have ever seen. also it sucks.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 29 February 2004 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

casino is great until the third act or so where it all goes to hell. like dune!

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 29 February 2004 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Casino's better than Goodfellas. There, I said it!

I will pray for God to forgive your soul before I go to bed tonight.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 29 February 2004 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll give you that the ending of unbreakable is lame-o. And I just don't feel Scorcese too much after Taxi Driver. One of things that reminds me I'm not Nas.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 29 February 2004 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

they really just add up, don't they?

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 29 February 2004 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

all I need is one mic, though. We've got that in common.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 29 February 2004 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm thankful at the very least nobody has stepped up to defend Harlem Nights.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 29 February 2004 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"i'll take you back to the future like an '85 DeLorean"

-luda

tcbmf, Sunday, 29 February 2004 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

which is not to say that BTTF is a crappy movie.

tcbmf, Sunday, 29 February 2004 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

It should be noted that Nas also has refered to himself as "the golden child" at least once.

theodore fogelsanger, Sunday, 29 February 2004 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

My Blue Heaven and Harlem Nights are easily better gangster movies than Goodfellas.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Sunday, 29 February 2004 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Back to the Future is a 'crappy movie'?!?!?!

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 29 February 2004 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Nas and DeNiro have a great deal in common, personalitywise when you think about it.

Jay is more a Pachino type, especially with the in-character spots playing himself only moreso on somewhat otherwise inferior product.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 29 February 2004 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, you like Shatner-resistant, ?

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

alain resnais really likes 'unbreakable'

i really like 'casino'

i don't know what we expect of rappers that we can't imagine them seeing 'vanilla sky'

no one should make kevin smith references, because then i cannot continue to believe that kevin smith does not exist

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 1 March 2004 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

SCARFACE...not a crap movie, but loved by all the wrong reasons...anyone seen the appendix on the DVD re-release?... I haven't had the chance, but apparently it makes a few of the rappers look reeeal dumb.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Monday, 1 March 2004 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Non-Phixion shout out Married to the Mob.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 1 March 2004 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

After I watched the Unbreakable DVD, I pulled it out of the player, said "the hell you are!", and bashed it into powder with a hammer. god what shite.

Casino is great!

I'm waiting for Snoop to reference "Bones" somewhere and Sticky Fingaz to reference his role in "Leprechaun: Back 2 Da Hood".

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Sticky Fingaz was in a Leprechaun movie!?!?!?!!?! Holy shit!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim and Mags mentioned Eyes Wide Shut and how they can "appreciate a Kidman to a....Tom Cruise!"

Barman mentioned "Three Colors like Krystof Kieslowski" (I hated them)

Redman mentioned Chris Sabian from The Negotiator (which wasn't bad but not worthy of rapping about mere months after release)

X RATED TYRONE, Monday, 1 March 2004 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I love Casino. Goodfellas is Goodfellas though...Casino is more like Iron Maiden's Live after Death, the classic lineup going through all their best schtick for hours and hours.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Doesn't Busta reference "Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon," parodying the character Sho'Nuff, Shogun of Harlem in some vid?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

ODB references the "warriors, come out to playeeyay" bit of The Warriors on 36 Chambers.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but "the Warriors" is NOT a "crappy movie".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, and there are about 8 billion other rap songs that reference Warriors anyway.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Barman mentioned "Three Colors like Krystof Kieslowski" (I hated them)

It was one of his rare moments that still makes me laugh in that the line was "my pissed-off jimbrowski turned three colors like Krystof Kieslowski". That's on some serious film school nerd shit right there.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Monday, 1 March 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The "funniest" part about Sticky Fingaz being in that Leprechaun move is that it's too small to be a major supporting role and too big to be a cameo. It's in that dreaded no-man's land of "I'll take what I can get, and I sure hope Spike Lee makes Clockers 2"

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

"Doesn't Busta reference "Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon," parodying the character Sho'Nuff, Shogun of Harlem in some vid?"

That movies really funny though! Bruce LeRoy! The kid from that show will Gil Gerard! Apollonia! And the SHOGUN of HARLEM is fantastic!

Actually a lot of these movies are at least decent (and I completely fail to comprehend how mentioning is "praising").

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 01:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in SF completely OTM, my flatmate and I saw The Last Dragon on late night TV last month and proceeded to lose it in a very thorough fashion.

For a Good Charlotte fan, Anthony, your taste in movies is frightningly rockist.

Dave M. (rotten03), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

How bout Big Boi mentioning Eyes Wide Shut and Legally Blonde on "Flip Flop Rock"?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 06:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh but right, "crappy movies," nevermind.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 06:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the "penelope ann cruz" line!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 06:10 (twenty-two years ago)

???

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 09:44 (twenty-two years ago)

"Eyes Wide Shut" is very certainly a crappy movie...Kubick or not.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

six months pass...
"I like nigerian Jazz
the blue twilight band
that plays tunes from a laser black sax
it sounds so laid back
it helps me relax
I brought the album after seeing K-Pax"

Canibus, "Masters Thesis"

he also references being "in the studio with James Lipton"

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Roxanne Shante, "Fatal Attraction"

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

see, Canibus liking K-Pax does not disappoint me in any way.

Dave M. (rotten03), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i searched it, I didn't destroy it.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been reduced to typing " lyrics" onto google. And I have work I could be doing.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

that should be "[name of random Wesley Snipes movie] lyrics"

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

There's that DMX line about how he just wants "to crawl into bed with some microwave popcorn / put on "Pay It Forward" and have a good cry" or whatever.

Seriously, though, I think a huge number of the chop socky movies that the Wu Tang Clan loves are pretty ultra-boring. Every once in a while there is a good one, and overall the aesthetic is fun, but the movies themselves can be super slow.

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

a lot of movie references in rap lyrics these days feel kinda like if PE had announced that they had Money Train back at the crib at the end of "Burn Hollywood Burn."

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

For the record, I liked Casino WAY more than Goodfellas.

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow. Someone already made that statement. I'm neither shocking or original.

Apologies all around.

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember Xzibit (I think) on Cribs saying his favourite movie was Man On the Moon. Weird.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

2 FAST 2 FURIOUS

f ath, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"Eyes Wide Shut" is very certainly a crappy movie...Kubick or not.

No.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

billstevejim is correct, its quite a good movie.

Also I was a jerk earlier in this thread...my apologies for not having a sense of humor.

djdee2005, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i like eyes wide shut.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"is that a man or juwanna mann"--kanye on that brandy song

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

five years pass...

"The video is set up where it's a bunch of scenarios that this bottle of Courvoisier somehow sews together," Busta said. "We got a scenario from the 'Rush Hour 2' movie with the Asian masseuse parlor. Then we got a scenario from 'Harlem Nights.' Then we got a scenario from 'Coyote Ugly.' "

da croupier, Saturday, 17 July 2010 05:30 (fifteen years ago)

lol

Mister AOR (The Reverend), Saturday, 17 July 2010 09:24 (fifteen years ago)

three years pass...

mac miller offering to bring American Beauty and Bruce Almighty over for a movie date...no one's going to top that

da croupier, Saturday, 14 September 2013 18:41 (twelve years ago)

I wonder what order he would show them.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 14 September 2013 18:48 (twelve years ago)

Wasnt there one rapper last year that lamented that they dont make craft films like Howard the Duck nemore

Neanderthal, Saturday, 14 September 2013 20:28 (twelve years ago)

good question

Billy Bob Thornton in "Slijngaard" (sic), Sunday, 15 September 2013 00:57 (twelve years ago)
