dancehall DJs/MCs

is it true that dancehall MCs are often referred to as 'DJs' regardless of whether or not they spin records? can someone clarify the dancehall terminology for little ol' me?

"deejay" = the MC
"selector" = the DJ

i always assumed it was for the same reason they were "DJs" on the radio...the guy who talked up the record being played at the moment.

(which has more to do with the deejay's primordial role from the 50s through the early 70s, which was much more the traditional MC [as in "master of ceremonies"] role than the continuous rap-flow of today)
