What a wonderful album this is. Picked it up today, and it's just beautiful, emotional, soulful. More cohesive than "Perfect Imperfections", and his stature as a singer and rhymer have only grown.

paulhw (paulhw), Sunday, 29 February 2004 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, its very good. probably the only album that nickalicious and i will agree upon this year.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 29 February 2004 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Does this one have the bad-ass song with Timbaland??

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Sunday, 29 February 2004 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

It does, now tell me Paulhw & Jess, what are the other songs like -who produced them to start off with.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Sunday, 29 February 2004 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

is this actually out yet, or is it next week?

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Sunday, 29 February 2004 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i bought it at the store.

production is by Traxx, Neptunes, Thomas Calloway, Timbaland, Jazze Pha, Premier and Organized Noise.

Guests are Timbaland & Pharrell (backup vocals), Jazze Pha, Ludacris, Big Rube, G-Rock, Menta Malone, T.I, Sir Cognac the Conversation.

paulhw (paulhw), Sunday, 29 February 2004 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Are the beats similiar to those on ...Perfect Imperfections?

I can't wait to hear this.

Mil, Sunday, 29 February 2004 07:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope most of it's better than "I'll Be Around".

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 29 February 2004 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it just me or is Pharrell purposely singing a line from the chorus of "Live Forever" (Oasis) in the song "Let's Stay Together"?

JoB (JoB), Sunday, 29 February 2004 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

no it's true

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Sunday, 29 February 2004 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh heh heh. That's all I have to say about that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 29 February 2004 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope most of it's better than "I'll Be Around".

That would make it one fucking amazing album.

djdee2005, Sunday, 29 February 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, come on! ;)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 29 February 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

more talk please. i'm just starting on it...

badgerminor (badgerminor), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

its kinda long winded

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not feeling it. Sorry.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i've only heard the first 7 tracks. i really liked it, but if @d@m isn't feeling it i will probably revise my position ;-)

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

too bad. rather liking slow vibe of "Art of Noise", silliness and Christmas feel of "Childz Play", and the synth on "Evening News" today. Maybe i'll fall off it later, but it doesn't seem like it.

badgerminor (badgerminor), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

If'n you don't know, Thomas Calloway = Cee-Lo. Right now I think my fav song is "The Art of Noise" or "Childz Play". I think the album as a whole sounds a little more choppy/schizo than his last album (prolly cuz he produced all the last one himself), but there are so many completely single-worthy tracks on this album it's just friggin ridiculous.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been really excited about this for a long time, and I'm going to pick it up tonight. However, I heard one track on the radio with pretty scratchy reception, and before realizing it was Cee-Lo I thought, "damn, that's some wack hippie-funk shit."

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm finding it really saggy in the middle.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

are you now?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I was somewhat disappointed. 7.0ish.

djdee2005, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Got it Saturday - only listened to it all the way through once, then the first side twice. Some dynamite stuff on here for sure, but it does seem longer than the other record (is it?) However, it also has a wider variety of stuff and way more overt nods to 70s soul, which I like. It's a holdover from my days of playing "spot the sample" in early 90s hip-hop.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

not digging it as much as the debut. it's much much more straightforward, which you'd think would make it more direct and powerful, but it comes off less personal and unhinged than Perfect Imperfections. that record didn't flow as well but i think its sheer density (in experimentation, genre play, beats) made up for it. this one's kind of just "Outkast with 'soul'" or something.

ryan kuo (ryan kuo), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Several of you make very interesting points about why you don't like it, but I don't agree with any of them. I like it a lot, and I can't find any defect in it.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

oh i think there's plenty of defects in it, but i still like it a lot.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

God, if I read one more review with the words 'freak flag' (let alone the flying of one), I'm going to punch someone in the throat. Was that line in the press release or something?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 11 March 2004 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

It's just...bland, anodyne, by-the-numbers. His voice still sounds great, but I miss all the gothic Goodie Mobb stuff. Plus the beats are way better on the first record.

I'd rather listen to Chingy.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 11 March 2004 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

(that last comment was just to wind up B2D)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 11 March 2004 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

And when say "anodyne" I actually mean something else entirely.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 11 March 2004 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

A_R_Levine, you shan't have my goat.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 11 March 2004 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck, Glockapella is heavy.

I'm enjoying most of it...Art of Noise was my least favorite, but now I like everything about it except for those big syrupy harmonies that make me think of Phish for some reason (or the Beach Boys I guess, neither of whom I want in my hip-hop).

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 11 March 2004 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

haha beach boys hip-hop = beta band

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 11 March 2004 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I love those harmonies, I think they're far more gospel than hippie.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 11 March 2004 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Good point Nick, that will probably help me to rationalize it more. I have had it in my head all morning after all.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 11 March 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Childz Play is great. I love that hip-hop albums seem to require a token song in 12/8 these days, and it also seems to bring out the hardest spitting (i.e. Outkast's The Whole World and ?, Killer Mike's Akshon, Nas's Heaven, My First Song, etc.).

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 11 March 2004 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just noticing that Jordan! It's like gangsta shuffle.

"The Evening News" is on my mp3 player right now. God this song's got such a subtle burn to it. It's weird though; it's like the most non-Premier-sounding Premier beat I've ever heard. The way the chorus part hits on the upbeat instead of the one is fucking gnarly.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 11 March 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I love that he can do some shit as sweet as "All Day Love Affair" and then shit as heavy as "Scrap Metal" on the same album without any raised eyebrows. Also, that first verse on "Scrap Metal" (I think it's Big Rube?) is one of the gnarliest things I've ever heard.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 11 March 2004 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I find myself wishing he would do more heavy shit until I actually put on one of the smooth tracks (esp. Die Tryin', All Day Love Affair, couple others) and can't imagine listening to anything else right then.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 11 March 2004 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm diggin his little bite of Musical Youth during "My Kind of People"

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Friday, 12 March 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
haha i just heard 'evening news' wtf! man thank fuck they knocked down dnd studios

prima fassy (mwah), Friday, 2 April 2004 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

this album did not live up to the modest expectations implied by the $4 I spent on a clean version I found in the used bin. I can deal with usual rapper bragging stuff fine, but all the "I can sing AND I can rap!" boasts are unbelievably grating, especially on "Childz Play", where his flow just sucks. a couple songs have the potential to be growers, but overall, dud. I might give it another chance tomorrow, though.
