Also, what music did they actually play back when you were in high school?

Both junior and senior proms had cover bands doing the 80s alt/mainstream thing. Both the Smiths and Power Station, if you will.

I'd want to hear
the Pixies' "Velouria"
Donna Summer's "Love to Love You Baby"
The Trammps' "Disco Inferno"
the Velvet Underground's "Pale Blue Eyes"
Joy Division's "Atmosphere"
Sonic Youth's "Wish Fulfilment" and "The Diamond Sea"

No, I didn't go to my prom, not even to get stoned and drunk in the parking lot. The theme, though, was "Netherlands". It had nothing to do with clogs and tulips, it was from a Dan Fogelberg song that was a soft rock staple back in the mid-70s. I remember they put up big snowcapped mountain mural in the cafeteria to represent the netherlands. God, it was lame.
They probably hired a local cover band who played Styx and Journey and Boston and Aerosmith. They'd get down and dirty with "Big Ten Inch". Their only nod to disco would be their cover of "Miss You" or "I Was Made for Lovin' You."
