The one that comes to mind now is BORBETO JAM by Borbetomagus. It is the core trio of the group augmented with couple of other people - Toshinori Kondo, Milo Fine, forget who else. It is hot. There are probably a lot more that I can't think of now.

Daniel DiMAGGIO, Sunday, 29 February 2004 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

How about dead C's 'the damned'? if you believe the rumours it was bruce russell plus a couple of non dead C members on a couple of tracks (but I couldn't tell).

Actually I can only think of some live performances, which were recorded but will prob not get a release (if you want it you'd just have to pay the musicians yourself for the CDR).

Borbetomagus also did a rec with hugh davies, which i was always keen on hearing.

MEV? (wasn't it the core ppl + steve lacy, can't recall right now).

sun city girls with violin player evyind (sp?) kang as can be heard to astonishing effect on that half hour cut on '330,003 crossdressers from the big veda' (CD2).

I think there's a CD on matchless with a quartet made up of 2/3 of AMM and 2/3 of schillpenbach (sp?) trio. never heard it but prob will get round to it.

Hey Julio, I thought it was M Morley plus a couple of Sandoz Lab Technicians and M was too stoned to realise when he chose the tracks, and it's kinda seeming like less of a rumour and more an amusing true tale

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Monday, 1 March 2004 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

oh ok, I did a thread abt that dead C record and I think the person said it was a rumour (or i took as if it was one, can't recall).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 1 March 2004 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

It's kind of a bit of a joke in Dunedin, I think. I prob shouldn't be saying anything really.

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Monday, 1 March 2004 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

no its really funny.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 1 March 2004 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah it is! I hope Morley's amused, he's a lovely guy.

It shouldn't habe been bcz i don't have that.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 1 March 2004 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The Borbetomagus records with guests are Borbeto Jam and Industrial Strength. The former is on Cadence, the latter on Leo. BJ is still available from Cadence on vinyl; IS is totally gone. Both featured Milo Fine, Tristan Honsinger, Peter Kowald and Toshinori Kondo. Hugh Davies appears on Work On What Has Been Spoiled, also out of print.

are there any AMM records out there that sound remotely like Sannyasi? I'm not aware of any.

charlie va (charlie va), Monday, 1 March 2004 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah - after all these answers, I still don't really get the question. but whatever.

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 1 March 2004 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

well i think what he was asking for was guests on improv groups with a fixed lineup so borbetomagus and AMM would fit to that. and tilbury with mimeo would too.

Dead C and sun city girls don't do 'proper' improv but I'll include them bcz improvising is a bit part of what they do.

But looking through I don't quite understand some of these answers.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i didn't read it that way at all... hello? fenn o'berg?

The Borbetomagus records with guests are Borbeto Jam .. featured Milo Fine, Tristan Honsinger, Peter Kowald and Toshinori Kondo. Hugh Davies appears on Work On What Has Been Spoiled, also out of print.
I would recommend Borbeto Jam. It's nice to hear the borb guys playing the noise role while four experienced "trad" free-jazzers work with them rather than despite them. Yes, you can still buy it from Cadence, and it's worth it. It's as though the free guys and the borbs collaborate at a less extreme volume, or at least sound like they're not trying to blow each other off the session. Almost acoustic sounding or 'organic' -- i dunno what to call it, but it's one of my favourite borb. recordings, seemingly showing a different side to them.

Cadence may still have some other interesting vinyl that's worth searching their database for and including in your package too. eg I took the opportunity of getting the great "village fair" experiment by the globe unity orchestra (microphone roaming between various GUO subset bands spread across the fairground for that ''tween this and that' effect so beloved by Ives, with the gatefold sleeve providing map of said fairground -- a pity the 'fairground' piece is only on one side, but still good) and "the ericle of Dolphi" which is Lovens/ Rutherford/ E Parker and surprise inclusion Dave Holland. I wish they still had all that Black Saint, Moers, Sackville, Nessa etc. vinyl, but there's bound to be some 'spirit room' seesions that'll take your fancy.

I'm a bit of a fan of the Hugh Davies session, but then i did buy it because he was on it, before i'd ever heard of borbetomagus. I think what he contributes is quite different to what you might expect from the more well known and sometimes excellent voice crack & borb. stuff. It's different again, but still more the trad 'electric' borb sound.

''i didn't read it that way at all... hello? fenn o'berg?''

haven't heard fenn o'berg, so I don't understand how you read it gygax. google later.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

fenn o'berg = christian fennesz, jim o'rourke + peter ("pita") rehberg

ie, no guests per fixed lineup.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

''"hands of caravaggioio" by mimeo w/john tilbury''

but the person who asked the q cited this: mimeo is an improv group with a (as far as i know) fixed line-up, and here they have a guest (tilbury).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i think we shall agree that there is no method here and move on!

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Taking the thread title literally, I'm saying Morphogenesis - Stromatolites, featuring Michael Prime on biofeedback from amplified plant life (hence foliage).
