Not answering the door because the guy who answered your ad for musicians looks like a child molester: C/D?

Plus, he knocked for like 10 minutes. Torn between intense guilt and fear.

Dud. You may have missed out on the next Pete Townsend.
O how I slay me.

otto, Sunday, 29 February 2004 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

He's now left two messages on my phone in the last 3 minutes. I mean, he was wearing like a Chuck E Cheese sweatshirt.

dleone (dleone), Sunday, 29 February 2004 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Just pray he doesn't read ILM

'the guy who answered your ad for musicians looks like a child molester: C/D?'

You missed the chance to ask him what kind of child molesting he was into.

Molesting kids is the new rock.

nickn (nickn), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The next chapter begins as follows:

I went to a club to meet this girl who had called on my ad, saying she was a vocalist looking to collaborate on stuff. Sounds good to me, as I like the sound of female voice on a lot of my songs anyway. Of course, sirens should have gone off when she said to meet her on the night she sang karoake at this place, but whatever. Anyway, after talking what kind of things I'm listening to and wanting to do live on the phone, and after having placed an ad referencing krautrock, Boredoms and experimental electronic, what are the first two words out of her mouth when I asked her what she was listening to today?

"White Zombie"

She then commenced to tell me how she was into "aggressive dance" music, with an edge, you know, like Garbage, No Doubt and Madonna (but she told me not tell anyone). Too late. I asked her why, among all the ads in the paper, she answered mine. She said because it said "composer". I am a fool.

Plus she had an eyebrow piercing.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 12 March 2004 05:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps it can be a partnership of creative tension.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 March 2004 05:27 (twenty-two years ago)

The funny thing is that I had made her a mix CD of what I considered "aggressive dance". I almost want to collaborate with her just to see how she reacts to DJ Pica Pica Pica.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 12 March 2004 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Its like "making the band 3"

Keep us updated. Seriously.

I wonder if there has been a give us your made up classified ad where you try and recruit potential band members for your band by listing your 'influences' and 'describing your sound' thread.

Sometimes it is too hard to figure out how to search for a thread, you know?

christhamrin (christhamrin), Friday, 12 March 2004 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i seem to remember there being such a thread. maybe it wasn't as straightforward as that though.

oops (Oops), Friday, 12 March 2004 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I wanna place an ad for musicians citing my influences as Napalm Death, Suicide and Can.

LITTLE LAMB [Jon Williams] (ex machina), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

We tried out a singer that was into the vague "punk" music, not that we're really punk but hey at least it's kinda in the ballpark. She subsequently revealed her favorite band OF ALL RECORDED TIME to be Counting Crows.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread makes me really nervous, as I am (perpetually) in the process of attempting to form a band via adverts. The last time I met up with a respondee it turned out to be someone from Avrocar though, which was nice.

ferg (Ferg), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, the band I'm in now was from an ad on a local indie label's message board...it's great, we all get along fine. We found our singer after she answered an flyer in a record store...The biggest problem I've found is that there are a lot of musicians that just want to "be in a band" and will answer ads no matter how far off of their own personal tastes and experience it is....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

The Counting Crows are one of those bands that I have grown to like quite a bit, but if a potential band member were to refer to them as a favorite I'd run screaming.

Ah godDAMMIT yeah. Cunts.

ferg (Ferg), Saturday, 13 March 2004 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

That last anecdote reminds me of one of the funnier prank calls on that Just Farr A Laugh CD - have you heard that? The chick who's into blues? Oh man you gotta download that one...

Anyway - what were you expecting? A girl into krautrock, Boredoms and experimental electronic? I guess you'd like to sleep with Wonder Woman too?

Sorry to be mean. Yes, keep us posted. I don't know why more folks don't just use ILM to form bands. Seems like a no brainer to me.

PS not to beat a dead horse but many great rock geniuses look like child molesters - Al Johnson is the first one to spring to mind. And, boy, he sure does!!

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 13 March 2004 04:00 (twenty-two years ago)

A girl into krautrock, Boredoms and experimental electronic?

Uh, Geeta to thread?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 13 March 2004 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, after fielding responses for this ad, I will be surprised if anyone on the planet has ever heard Boredoms. I forgot to mention I also referenced the Beach Boys in the ad, and 75% of the people calling are mentioning them. One guy was playing me his stuff over the phone, and I told him it reminded me of Fountains of Wayne, hoping he wouldn't take it as an insult. Of course not, because it he then told me it was one of chief influences.

Also - when you see an asking for musicians to play my original stuff, do you immediately think "I can get him to sing in our band playing our music"? Because lots of people are trying this on me.

So far, the front-runner is the guy who kept telling me he could play banjo.

dleone (dleone), Saturday, 13 March 2004 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"...see an ad...", that is

dleone (dleone), Saturday, 13 March 2004 05:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Electrified banjo? Cause that rules.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Saturday, 13 March 2004 06:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I know a coupla chords. Let's rock.

dieblucasdie (dieblucasdie), Saturday, 13 March 2004 06:37 (twenty-two years ago)

What kind of instrumentation were you looking for? I can play bass alright as well as moderate ability at keyboard (I know some major chords!!), am into kraut rock, the boredoms and experimental electronica (as well as modern classical, old school country, hip hop, free jazz, punk and post-punk, indie, and all kinds of pop music) and yet have still somehow not been able to find a decent band to play in.
