No thread on them yet. Well I'll be Jesus in a can.

"Take it Off!", "Hung Far Low", that super mega SFTRI 2-CD comp... Jerry has probably fostered every NYC musician in this band at least once for at least 15 minutes.

Are you talking about the Belgian band on Crammed?

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Monday, 1 March 2004 08:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Not the belgian band i suppose? didn't they only sing in French?

Daniel Dee, Monday, 1 March 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The Honeymoon Killers that I know shared members with the Belgian band Aksak Maboul (a great band, btw). Apparently there are two bands with the name.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 1 March 2004 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, the Belgian HK stuff I know is only in French and is pretty good. Very reminiscent of Stero Total.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Monday, 1 March 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, Stereo Total made a cover version of a Honeymoon Killers song (Nationale 7)

I have, uh, crap, I can't think of the name of the album (oh yeah, HUNG FAR LOW, duh), but it may be their last album album, with Jon Spencer and Russell Simins (not Simmons) on it. Just before they started the JSBX.
Good crunchy stuff.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Monday, 1 March 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw that Belgian lot at the Berlin Loft, Spring 1984. Weren't they on Les Disques de Crepuscule? Anyway, they were great, in a pleasingly European Arthouse sort of way.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Monday, 1 March 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

They were on Crammed records. I think Crammed founder, Marc Hollander, was actually part of the band

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Right, Hollander's band Aksak Maboul collaborated with Honeymoon Killers (similar to how Henry Cow and Slapp Happy had done earlier in the 70s), and they released two things on his Crammed Discs.

I've been plugging this for a while, but anyone remotely interested should pick up the recent 2CD Crammed retrospective (Global Soundclash), which has tracks from the HK, as well as Tuxedomoon, Minimal Compact, Hector Zazou, etc.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, had no idea there were two bands called that. I was, uh, referring to the trashy rock NYC Honeymoon Killers.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 1 March 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

(but the other one sounds intriguing too)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 1 March 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The Belgian one was great! Thanks for reminding me.

The New York scum rock one was like spring training between Pussy Galore in the '80s and Boss Hog / JSBX in teh '90s. Wasn't the Sub Pop single the best thing? The Buy-Our longplayers were like acres of mud. There were a few earlier records on Fur which I never heard. Hung Far Low was actually more like a launch party for the new bands.

Later on, Jerry Teel started a music store in Williamsburg.

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Monday, 1 March 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hung Far Low" was my introduction to anything with Jon Spencer on it! (I hadn't quite introduced myself to Pussy Galore by then, you see). It was such a great first impression, and nothing he's done before and after has matched this record.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 1 March 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

but there's nothing really OSTENSIBLY jon spencer on that album. if it's anyone's album, it's Jerry Teel's album. no?
I like that instrumental, I think it's "Devil's Jump"

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Monday, 1 March 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

which does, yeah, sorta sound like some of the stuff Spencer was up to by Extra Width.

Yup! I guess I like Jon best when he's not running the show, I guess.

It's been a long time since I've heard them, but I remember thinking Teel's Honeymoon Killers sounded fucking great. I need to get a hold of some of that stuff again. Since then, I keep coming mostly across references to and mp3s of the Belgian band. I guess I should check them out as well.

Jerry Teel records/produces bands now and then. He produced the Yeah Yeah Yeahs first EP and Red Soda's Underneath the Moon and Eyelashes EP. The Red Soda thing was pretty cool.

Marcus Barr (Marcus Barr), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

He also had something to do with the $10/hour studio on 2nd Street where Pavement recorded Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain.
