Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

corporate restructuring [in management speak]..they should hire a few ILM-ers as A & R agents

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

So how many major labels are there now? Three?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Universal, EMI, BMG, Warner...am I missing anything?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

EMI
BMG
SONY
NEW WARNER Music
Universal

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh right, SONY!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought the Bronfmans were already in the music business?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

they sold universal to seagram in the late 90s, seagram then sold to vivendi

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I forgot about the Vivendi sale. That's why, re: my first post, I thought there'd been another consolidation.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

did anyone else just feel the planet shrink?

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

p.s. anyone looking for a fantastic fictional tale of a family based on the Bronfmans is advised to read Mordecai Richler's amazing Solomon Gursky Was Here.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I though BMG and Sony had done some sort of merger?

Lynskey (Lynskey), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

its pending. all signs right now point to four majors by the end of the year.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

"I look forward to working closely with the talented, dedicated and
professional group of employees and artists at Warner Music Group
as we work together to create the world's most dynamic independent
music company."

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Wonder if he'll start pushing to get songs of his on albums again.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

by independent does this mean that Warner Music is not attached in anyway (save the name) to AOL T/W?

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

yes

ha, bronfman thinks that now that Warner Music is seperated from AOL Time-Warner empire he runs an independent music company !

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/3232190.stm
But Times Warner will retain an option to buy back 15% of the company within three years, and possibly up to 19.9% under certain circumstances.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

so no crossovers between properties like Duck Dodgers did with Green Lantern a few months ago?
no, say, Madonna and Alfred E. duets album?

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

No Madonna/Newman duets, yes -- but Warner Music doesnt own Duck Dodgers, so he can still hangout with Green Lantern and fight Marvin and Darkseid.

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

My sister works at Rhino, but as of couple months ago she said she thought her job was safe.

nickn (nickn), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

The Bronfmans actually owned Seagrams until the company was sold to Vivendi in 2000. They didn't sell Universal to Seagrams. When Eddie took over as CEO in 1994, he was more interested in entertainment than booze.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 04:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i really do hope they leave Rhino alone, it's warner's main redeeming feature

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 04:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably the cuts will hit them too but Rhino seems to have established itself as a particular niche with particular buyers, which actually will set them in good stead for a while. At the same time there will probably be less in the way of utterly enjoyably random things like the Brain in a Box comp.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 04:21 (twenty-one years ago)

there already has been for a few years, since they essentially became WB's reissue arm rather than their wacky old selves

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Bronfman- that sounds like the name of some Russian superhero!!!!

Old Fart!!! (oldfart_sd), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

These kind of things remind me of the sleeve to GYBE's last album, demonstrating how me buying any music that didn't come from a charity shop actually, directly and undeniably allowed Morlocks to eat our children.
