What's the definition of a 'scene'?

where all people involved know each other and bounce off/nick each others ideas, use the same equipment, producers, techniques, big each other up, is it a social thing or just a musical convergence?... 'scene' is used so often, but for the life of me I cannot think of one single 'scene'. grime is the first thing to spring to mind, but with all the eski/sublow naming problems is that another indie-esque avoidance of being lumped in with a 'scene'?

in brief:

fans and dj's create scenes (clubs, internet forums etc etc.)

journalists often *try* and create scenes

artists very often reluctant to be part of a scene.

No 'scene' has ever gone on for more than a few years, but there are planty of bands in their 20s, 30s or older.

The nice answer: a group of friends who all happen to share love for making music and often take part in each other's projects and support each other.

The not-so-nice answer: a concerted effort amongst people from a certain country/clique to publicize only their friends' efforts in any sub-music genre and hype it up such to create the impression that this is the only vital center of such a musical movement happening.

I don't think a "scene" has to be all friends. Plus, a "scene" includes both artists and audience.

Yeah, it is.
Like the college scene or the hippie scene, the term helps one to loosely identify a number of people who have a common interest.
