and 13 dollars isnt what you pay for a CD anyway? in fact, isnt cheaper than what one would pay for a Metallica CD -- arent they usulally 15.99 or more? damn them for wanting to make money from their music. what are they thinking?

Exactly. No printing costs, no shipping costs, no money to the middlemen in shops , Cost to the fan - Ink & Paper, Jewel Case etc Metallica have devoted fans who will spend a fortune on this. Lars bank manager must be chuffed.

bbbut isn't this what everyone says they want? cutting out the evil record company middleman? I know Metallica have long since become metalla non grata in Internet circles for obv. reasons, but I actually think this is a good thing...it gives fans more options, esp. hardcore fans that don't want to spend alot of time looking online for boots of maybe suspect quality....

all I'm saying is that if someone else (not Metallica) was doing it I don't think they'd get crucified for it...as far as them getting more money, isn't that what the whole downloading "revolution" is supposed to be about --- getting the artists a bigger cut of the profits from their own music by dealing directly with the fanbase?

I'm very pleased that people are realizing that 60 minutes of music (especially when it's Metallica ie awful) isn't worth anything close to $13. I'm not buying another CD until they top out at $7.99. Until then I'm happy to steal.

I mean, it's really hard to sell things that people can get for free. It's the way it works--I'm really sick of hearing musicians get all worked up about their "artistry" pretending that what they produce is something besides just another commodity. From Pink to Cornelius Cardew it's a fucking commodity and if I can get it for free I will and if Pink or whoever has to find some other good to produce that's fine. I'll watch porn instead--free porn tends to suck the same way MP3.com did.

But the fact it's cutting out the middleman shouldn't some of that be passed on to the fan buying the stuff? It still seems a little excessive to me.

The way I read the site (clicking around), the concerts wind up being 2-CD sets, and in MP3 format they're only $10 per show. And there is artwork; you download that, too, either as PDF files or JPEGs (the site wasn't too clear on that). They also sell the same show for $13 in FLAC format, which I wouldn't be using anyway as you'd have to convert it to AIFF on a Mac.

I'm unlikely to buy any of these concerts, because Metallica suck now, but $10 for a 2-CD set, with artwork (yeah, you have to print it out on your own printer at home—boo fucking hoo) seems like a fair deal to me. Weren't Pearl Jam charging $15-17 for their 2-CD bootlegs?

There are probably lots of people who think a Metallica bootleg is worth $13. More power to them. I wouldn't buy something like this from that band, but I think it's a cool service.

For a band I really like, I'd pay $13 for a good-quality bootleg, even if I don't get a jewel box and liner notes. I throw the former away, and I rarely look at the latter (all my CDs are in CD changers, cataloged and controlled by computer). I think it would be cool if bands started recording their shows from the mixing board and selling them on iTunes, etc.

On preview: $13 in FLAC sounds like a much better deal. If a good band started offering this, I'd give it a shot.

fifteen years pass...

just saw them live last night. incredibly fun show. they played "Ride the Lightning" and it was scorching.

also got "Fight Fire with Fire" again (how weird to get that in the only two shows I've seen of the 21st century).

and they brought back "Creeping Death" after a weird absence at the last Hardwired show I saw.

also they've mostly knocked off the endless guitar solos so it's not like the 3 hour days of the TBA tour.
