Tim McGraw - Classic or Dud?

I think he's somewhere in between. On one hand, he's released a lot of good songs that raise the banner of Nashville not necessarily being utter garbage, but on the other hand, he's definitely released his share of crap tunes ("Don't Take the Girl," anything he released with his wife). What say you?

drunkenly steals a horse and punches a cop after receiving Father of the Year-type award...I'm not sure if that's classic or dud either.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

His ass is classic, but his music is ass.

Joseph McCombs, Tuesday, 2 March 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Is the one that sang "Iraq and I Roll?" Cause if that's him, then classic all the way.

Famous Athlete, Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I posted this on a different thread early last year:

>>Best Tim McGraw Album: Place in the Sun.
Best songs on Tim McGraw's new album: Comfort Me, Tickin' Away, Red Ragtop, That's Why God Made Mexico, Illegal, Sing Me Home, Who Are They, Tiny Dancer.
Best Tim McGraw song to mention the Village Voice: Who Are They.
Best Tim McGraw song mentioned by My Name is Kenny: Where The Green Grass Grows
Second-Best Tim McGraw song mentioned by My Name is Kenny: Refried Dreams
Best Tim McGraw song to rewrite "Indian Reservation" by the Raiders:
Indian Outlaw
Best recent song by Tim McGraw's wife: One
Best early song by Tim McGraw's wife: Wild One
Another song by Tim McGraw's wife that's just as good: The Secret of Life
One Album which would be immeasurably better if Tim McGraw was the singer: 69 Love Songs<<

*Place in the Sun* was one of the best albums (in any genre) in whatever year it came out, by the way.

I'd totally pay to hear that, but only if Faith Hill released a box set in which she responded to every song.

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

He has a deep love for his country, which counts for a lot.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Where do people get the idea he's some big deal patriot? I think you people are confused. His biggest protest song is a pro-choice tune, for crissakes. (Frank Kogan's comment from his country music poll ballot: "Her name is Polly, she lives in a tree: Tim McGraw.")

chuck, Tuesday, 2 March 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

(Or Pauline, or whatever Johnny Rotten called her in "Bodies". I forget. Plus I think her tree-living was past tense, come to think of it.)

chuck, Tuesday, 2 March 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Not that I'm implying he's politically left-leaning or anything. But in "Who are They," in addition to casting aspersions upon my employer and alleged political correctness, he says, "Democrat, Republican, I guess I'm neither one." And he has no pro-war or rah-rah America songs I know of. He does have a song that comes out in favor of barbecue stains on white t-shirts, however, if that helps you at all.

chuck, Tuesday, 2 March 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Doesn't "Real Good Man" have that line about respecting his mama and his Uncle Sam or somesuch? Not that there's anything wrong with respecting Uncle Sam (whatever that means) but it's a little gratuitous in the context of the song. And "Who Are They" is completely retarded. Both songs sound good, though.

Patrick (Patrick), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

why is it when Village Voice editors get ripped on by artists (McGraw believes an evil THEY owns the Village Voice) they undoubtedly start handing out A's in response (see: xgau with Lou Reed ans Sonic Youth)? Though yeah, xgau doesn't appreciate McGraw.

Me I ain't heard shit aside from "Let's Make Love" and that alone won't make me investigate further.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

and Chuck were you praising McGraw in the Voice before "Who Are They?" I'm curious if his accusation was based on his take on the front page or the music section.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Clint Black did the "Iraq and I Roll" song. And I think people are confusing McGraw (god knows why cuz they look and sound nothing alike) with Toby Keith (who's definitely a total "America love it or get the fuck out" kind of guy.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

All these guys should be forced to take off their hats now and then so we can inspect their hairlines.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never been able to listen to him after "Don't Take the Girl" and that Indian song, whatever it was called. Maybe I should give him another chance. I'm inclined to like him just on account of being Tug McGraw's son.

spittle (spittle), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

This is OT, but does anyone remember that "John Deere Green" song that was a hit around the same time as "Don't Take the Girl"? I don't remember who sang it. My lord, that was a year for country hokum.

spittle (spittle), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I forget if I ever actually heard the song about him being in his wigwam, beating on his tom-tom but I remember hearing plenty about it. Did he ever make a video for that, and how F Troop did he go?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 01:33 (twenty-one years ago)

"Don't Take The Girl" put me in the anti-McGraw camp for a long while, but "I Like It, I Love It" = classicness.

Poppy (poppy), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

My lord, that was a year for country hokum.

It's always a good year for country hokum.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i liked don't take the girl :-(

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Tug McGraw, now, was an absolute CLASSIC. Used to hang in the outfield before games, catching fungos behind his back while blowing bubbles as big as his head, then tossing the balls up to kids in the stands. RIP.

well, remeber, he's talking about people who OWN the village voice, who, um, bob and i have also disagreements with over the past couple years. anyway, yeah, place in the sun made my top ten which ran in the voice (as did short lists i wrote praising him) before he did who are they. bob liked lou reed before take no prisoners, though, i think. (though he did love the early '80s stuff, i guess. hmm.) he thought tim's pro-choice song was okay, too, i think. and i think he made a funny chief nokahoma joke once in re: indian outlaw and tug.

"i like it i love it" is one of tim's WORST hits ever, by the way. and i forget what "don't take the girl" sounds like!

chuck, Wednesday, 3 March 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

(that post was pretty incoherent and garbled, but what can i say? the who-are-they people who own the village voice require me to attend a noon meeting every wednesday, so i was typing fast!)

chuck, Wednesday, 3 March 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
For this alone, fuckin' classic.

"To me, there's a lot of politics being played and a lot of people trying to put people in bad positions in order to further their agendas," McGraw, a 38-year-old native of Delhi, La., said after ABC News Radio's Dan Gordon asked about Katrina.

"When you have people dying because they're poor and black or poor and white, or because of whatever they are — if that's a number on a political scale — then that is the most wrong thing. That erases everything that's great about our country."

McGraw specifically criticized President Bush. "There's no reason why someone can't go down there who's supposed to be the leader of the free world … and say, 'I'm giving you a job to do and I'm not leaving here until it's done. And you're held accountable, and you're held accountable, and you're held accountable.

"'This is what I've given you to do, and if it's not done by the time I get back on my plane, then you're fired and someone else will be in your place. '"

Tug >>>>>>>>>>>>> Tim

timmy tannin (pompous), Friday, 10 March 2006 03:13 (nineteen years ago)

Tug's dead.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 March 2006 03:14 (nineteen years ago)

true, but that doesn't change the equation

timmy tannin (pompous), Friday, 10 March 2006 03:25 (nineteen years ago)

Granted, but we must embrace life. (I might be using the royal 'we.')

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 March 2006 03:34 (nineteen years ago)

I think his quote is kinda...well, sweet. I mean, the guy obv. doesn't speak much politically, but he's really affected by what's gone on there. And for him to criticize Bush? Seems like a bit of a risk given his demo...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Friday, 10 March 2006 03:36 (nineteen years ago)

I have always thought Tim McGraw was an average talent with an above-average talent for picking songs.*

* Does not include "Indian Outlaw," "Don't Take the Girl."

Justin, Friday, 10 March 2006 04:01 (nineteen years ago)

xpost

so I guess that means Faith >>>>>>>>> Benny ??

timmy tannin (pompous), Friday, 10 March 2006 04:20 (nineteen years ago)

My work colleague loves but laughs at his music b/c his lyrics are so "Take me in your arms and hold me"...

one year passes...

heard "Don't Tell The Girl" today & I think I'm with this thread: pretty clunky song. With the first chorus you get what the trick's gonna be, & it rolls out predictably after that. But it moves too quickly & though I could feel that I coulda shed a tear---McGraw's voice sells the weep---the song pulls its punch & you don't learn what happens to the girl. I felt kinda used afterwards.

Euler, Thursday, 22 September 2011 21:18 (fourteen years ago)

ah shit "Don't Take The Girl" I meant

Euler, Thursday, 22 September 2011 21:19 (fourteen years ago)

That's a sexy song.

Euler, Thursday, 22 September 2011 21:24 (fourteen years ago)

I like the album, even the Faith Hill duet.

Anakin Ska Walker (AKA Skarth Vader) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 22 September 2011 21:25 (fourteen years ago)

I only know the big hits but I oughta dig deeper ("Don't Take The Girl" aside).

Oh. Wow. Scandinavian, didn't know the term. He or someone around him has got to be aware of the connotations, right? I can't imagine otherwise. And if so, man, that's blatant.

Mule, Friday, 17 January 2014 22:25 (eleven years ago)

On the other hand: known Democrat, plans on running for office in Tennessee. He'd need AfAm votes. But hhow do you not vet your titles. Thisbis confusing.

I once won a baseball autographed by his dad at a local McDonald's. I immediately dropped it in a puddle in the parking lot, smearing the ink.
