YYYs' "Our Time" - "Manic Monday" ripoff or homage?

Just the chorus -- "It's the year to be hated...so glad that we made it." That shit sounds EXACTLY like "Just another manic Monday...I wish it was Sunday."

Actually, I'm just proud that I finally figured out what the tune sounded like.

I vote for neither. I don't really see it.

uhh..it's actually "Crimson and Clover" - fuck the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

What? How can you not see it. Sing each line out loud, it's practically the same tune. And yes, fuck the yeah yeah yeahs.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah. I hear Bangles.

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you for the support, brother Jim. Perhaps only us Robinsons hear it.

The band has acknowledged that it's the melody from "Crimson and Clover." And I cast a vote for "not fuck the Yeah Yeah Yeahs." I think that song is excellent, as are most of their songs.

It's easy to hear why: In "Our Time," the EP's anthemic final track (which sounds a little like "Crimson & Clover"), Karen O tells it like it is. "It's the year to be hated," she sings. "So glad that we made it."

Our Time steals the melody from Tommy James' Crimson & Clover and unleashes a crude, proud statement of rebellion ("it's our time/ to be hated").

Our Time ruba la melodia a Crimson & Clover di Tommy James e sguinzaglia una cruda, orgogliosa dichiarazione di ribellione ("it's our time/ to be hated").

Ok, yeah, I hear Crimson and Clover as well. Perhaps the question, then, is: The Bangles' "Manic Monday": Crimson and Clover ripoff, or homage?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost, and thanks for the documentation, there, kiddo.

It's a shame that songwriter Christopher Tracy died (soon after a long fought civil war) in 1986. I don't think we'll ever know.

(i might be more sympathetic to your cause if it didn't reek of anti-yyy sentiment)

dean! (deangulberry), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 00:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Please don't misinterpret. I am quite the YYYs supporter. I have no problems with songs sounding like other songs. In fact, it's an endless source of fascination for me. RE: "Fuck the YYYs", I was trying to be lascivious.

(i might be more sympathetic to your cause if you were correct)

dean! (deangulberry), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

You're right. It sounds absolutely nothing like Manic Monday, and absolutely everything like Crimson and Clover (which sounds absolutely nothing like Manic Monday or vice versa).

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Totally. The Internet wins again.

Another part of a song that sounds like(remind me of) another...

New Pornographers - Chump Change

"It's OK to be seen
don't dethrone the drama queen
just for putting everybody in their place"

The Shins - Girl Inform Me

"...to take into the wind
And before we begin
is there nothing to kill this anxiety."

kickitcricket, Wednesday, 3 March 2004 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Speaking of the Shins, a friend of mine SWEARS that "Caring is Creepy" is some song from long ago. Can anyone tell me what he may be confusing it with?

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

It does sound like The Bangles. Not that it doesn't sound like anything else, but it does sound like The Bangles.

NB: Robinson = woo.
