It's fairly clear that the "forwards" and "backwards" tracks have both been doctored. You can hear hiccups in the "forwards" version that is definitely not there in the original recording.

I'm not sure why they doctored it, though, cuz if you run just the "yes there are two paths you can go by but in the long run" lines backward with protools or a sampler, Plant clearly says "blah blah blah Satan blah blah Here's to My Sweet Satan."

Uhm, no. Spell those lyrics out phonetically and then write them backwards - they don't produce those syllables. For example, none of those words contain the flat "a" sound in Satan. Besides, they didn't have protools or a sampler when they recorded these lyrics, and it definitely *doesn't* work on a record player (I've tried it, and not just with this record), so how could they have had the wherewithal to perform such a subtle feat? Yr ears are playin tricks on ya.

Well Shakey, use a sound device. not a pad and paper!!! That said, I forgot to add the "There's still time to change the road yer on" line. In fact, it's the phrase "There's still time to change" that backtracks as "My Sweet Satan."
"Change" has your flat "a." There's a nice Bonham blast "Ratatatat" that helps obscure what maybe a bit of backwards vocal or not.

ok.... that toolshed stuff, its because Jimmy bought a castle previously owned by allister crowly (renown satanist), and there was a small one room structure off to the side that supposedly, according to crowly, served as some satanic purpose. Crowly also reffered to the structure as "the toolshed" (and get this, supposedly, there was a church that was burned to the ground with its people inside on the very spot the castle was, freaky huh? especially since rituals had been performed in there).

and the backwards lyrics go:

ooooooo heres to my sweet satan. the one whos little path would make me sad, whose power is satan! he'll give you give you 666. there was a little toolshed where he made us suffer sad satan!

and if you listen to the live versions backwards, then it says the same stuff. it seems so coincedental that it must have been doctored, but nope, if you sing it and play it backwards, it'll still say it as long as you stress your sylabols right. if you listen really hard you can make out were the parts match up.
like when he says " theres still TIME to change the road your on" the word time is said so that backwards, its my, as in "my sweet satan". im gonna stop now before you think i have way too much time on my hands. ive figured this stuff out over a long period of time tho, just for the record.

Listen guys...you can play just about any song backwards and its gonna sound creepy (and even entertain some people). Seeing lyrics while listening to a song can really mess wit ur brain. To be able to hear any type of satanic message n this song WITHOUT seein the lyrics before hand would be pretty miraculous. I know i didn't. Many bands recorded songs like that so more people would get curious and buy the album-but that wasnt even the case here anyway. Also, people can munipulate the song on their computers to make it sound the way they want it to. Jimmy page's buying the castle n all that from a satanist would go perfectly with the backwards lyrics that some of u suggested...but whoever said that was true? theres so many different reasons why people make up rumors like these...and they spread fast. Some bored person or record company or watevr jumped all over the media and tried to get zeppelin negative attention....i dont really no wat or y they did but it doesnt matter. Its "it's my sweet satan". I know because I just sampled it reversed it and slowed it down. Thats the only bit you can hear. The rest of the lyrics are a load of crap. I did hear 666 that's weird and another satan. Something about a toolshed laugh out loud. Robert plant has forgotten what forwards lyrics were about. Luck or messages from the devil? whats more likely. Anyway just thought I would tell you..

OK before I went to this site I went to another site that had the same thing but not as clear. On that site it didn't show you the lyrics just the song backwards and I could make out what it said so it isn't that you make your mind think that and thats what it is it really sounds like that.

Heh, it does actually sound like that backwards. Later on, you can clearly make out "Goosefeather" and at some point "I wish it would snow", but I haven't listened to it in quite a long time, so I forget where those are. Sometime after the Satan stuff in the reversed song (so before it in the forward version)

For more amusement, get a copy of Right Said Fred's "I'm Too Sexy". I had it on a tape that flipped itself over. The song sounds cool backwards, but then you get stuff like "Hang yourself up, hang you..." "Go back in on... and I'll miss ya hey, go back to my... " "It's all for your... It's all for your ..." "Man, I've a snack for you, man... Ahhh, this guy's worth a..."
Maybe not all clearly discernable, but give it a shot. Quite amusing :)

I believe that the message is there for one reason. I have the stairway to heaven song, I recorded it with a microphone and played it backwards myself.... It was there. The only thing is that it has nothing to do with satan. It is just a coincidence. These idiots go and play every single song backwards until they find something remotely close to words.

I thought the words were pretty plain as day you can also hear "Play backwards hear words sung" at the begging of the reversed version. I did not doctor it nor am i making this up. I am not a religious person by any means. I swing neither way Satan or God. I can honestly say though I am scared of Robert Plant and Satan becoming a Tag team and winning the world title. LOL! Although "Play backwards" is pretty distorted and needs some imagination, "Hear words sung" is crystal clear.
i have heard other words backwards, around 50 seconds (from end time) to 70 seconds (from ending time) is sort of just,.. strange, hear it for yourself, i suppose the imaginative human mind could make up many phrases.
Listen to around 150 seconds something like "ahhhhhh ohhhhh ~my satan was always sweet~" (something comes after this, but i cant make it out. maybe it was not intended to be understood backwards) try it yourself.
Around 200-220 seconds, the long satan 666 toolshed talk.

around 250 seconds and beyond its very strange, but i distintly hear "if i ????? off of me ?????" around 268 "Wish the lord"
could just be my imagination, try it yourself, the words i mentioned i DISTINCTIVELY heard. if anyone has any ideas i would love to hear it.

I keep hearing things liek "i wish (it would snow?)" and "i wish that" "i wish blahbalh" around 380
"baby, (if it were sunny out?) ???"

Anyways, thats what my ears hear without anyone telling me what to hear, just listen to it yourself and draw your own conclusions, i am still wondering at the meaning behind (what i believe) to be the other messages in this song, which i believe is littered with messages, which may not be so clear, but may have been intended to be by the artists.

As I recall from Hammer of the Gods, the lyrics to "Stairway" were written rather quickly by Plant while he listened to Jimmy and Jonesy rehearse and arrange the music. The thought of him and Page sitting around a table and working out hard and soft consonants to achieve such a muddled result seems really far-fetched to me.

Im the lead singer and guitarst of a band and zeppelin has been one of my greatest influences. I have spent hours of research on the sublect as a college thesis paper. I guaruntee that all of the messages are true. I have spun the vinal, and listened to the song backwards in its original and live versions and u can hear it as clear as day.I have also recorded myself singing the lyrics and you can still hear all of the messages( although slightly slurred from the absense of Bonhams snare helping the crisp begings of the words.)I have also recordced my band playing tis song and the same result occured as in the original version. Its impossible for it to be a hoax, coincidence, or doctored. Its just to damn clear to deny it. I understood it the first time i heard it without eve reading the lyrics before. Its real, lets all move on with our lives now
