S/D Eddie Bo

Hey Ya. I have One comp with an Eddie Bo song, and every time it comes up, like 14 minutes into the affair, I'll scream out "Fuck yeah, this lights it UP" and turn the volume beyond 11.... and basically where do I now go after proclamations of "best song ever, SHUT UP" are uttered? Song in question is "Hook and Sling". As you can glean, "an Eddie Bo song" means this ain't an Eddie Bo compilation; however, if there's like a be-all-end-all Bo comp don't be shy listing, I've limited means, this week. Vinyl or CD, whatever. THAT BEAT.

I picked up a comp called The Hook and Sling on Funky Delicacies a few years back--the disc came out in '97--and it slams pretty damn hard. Might wanna seek that one out.

Yeah, that's what I have. It's pretty great; there's a two-part track on the first side (name escapes me) that's got this driving, insanely fuzzed out guitar. Sounds like it could be the Litter or something.

search: "pass the hatchet". those drums - good lord!!

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

"Pass out the hatchet" has one of the greatest opening statements of any song, now if only I could recover from a friend of mine mentioning that the picture in "Saturday Night Fish Fry" of Eddie Bo looks exactly like his (my friend's) grandmother.

Also search "Check Mr. Popeye," though it's more in the vein of Huey "Piano" Smith than funk.

"He was one of the last great New Orleans piano professors, kind of a bridge between Professor Longhair and Allen Toussaint," said New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival producer Quint Davis. "Everyone now has to remember to check their bucket on their own, without Eddie to tell us." From Keith Spera's obit in the New O. Times-Picayune

From Offbeat magazine's weekly e-mails:

The memorial service for Bo will be Wednesday April 1 (Eddie would have liked the fact that it's on April Fool's Day!) at the Rock 'n' Bowl from 2 to 5 p.m. with speakers Nick Spitzer and Offbeat's Jan Ramsey and performers Allen Toussaint, Joe Krown, Walter "Wolfman" Washington, Bunchy Johnson, Deacon John and more. The memorial won't be a funeral, but more of a party so Eddie's fans, friend and family can share good memories of his life.

A bank account for the Eddie Bo Memorial Fund to help cover funeral costs has been set up. Those who wish to help can send contributions to:

seven years pass...

I was obsessed with Hook & Sling at one time, but the internet was not what it is now and I did not know that Smokey Johnson was the drummer. Here's another neat thing with him on drums

I was obsessed as in I had heard and managed to tape it off a radio show but didn't catch what it was, and it took me like another year before I figured it out, and I really badly wanted to know, like was always listening to whatever funk comp I could find to see if it was on there.

How did I never contribute to this thread? Here's a corker, guitar on this (Irving Bannister I think) is pretty much everything I want in a guitar solo.

You should meet this Israeli drummer who also loves that song.

This guy: https://9voltmusic.com/about/yonadav-halevy/.

Haven't seen him around NYC in a couple of years though. In fact last time I came across him was at a Dr. John show at BAM during his weeklong (?) residency there, at which that song was in fact covered.

"Ain't My Fault" is an immortal slab of New Orleans drumming. Also I've sampled those hi-hats a bunch of times.

I got to see Eddie Bo a few times in Switzerland before he passed.

He used to have a regular piano bar gig at Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville club in N.O. Saw him cover "Old Time Rock and Roll" there once. :-(
