But, one day a friend rang "The fall are going to be on late show in five mins.." so videoed and watched "Telephone Thing", another classic.
I don't remember the "no nirvana" one at all. But I did have (still do) the Britpop one.

Not live music as such, but P Morley's interview with Mark Morris of S'Express and Philip Glass (he'd remixed "Hey Music Lover") was another tiny gem.

On The Word J Mascis memorably soloed right into the commercial break (drowning out Terry Christian's link to camera) and back out the other side. I think they eventually had to shoot him.

Pearl Jam - Alive: really tame, too much hair, like The Band without any idea of what they're involved in.
Belly - Gepetto: I remember thinking they looked soooo cool at the time, the guitar player in particular. Now he just looks really intimidated. Not a great song, tanya donnely's voice sounds appaling. Not good. the bass player jumps around like an idiot at the end.
Jane's addiction - Been caught stealing: Awesome. Faultless. Farrel's voice is thin and distant and tiny and soooo incredible. Tight as anything. They look terrible.
Screaming trees - dollar bill: Lanegan's voice is good. This song is really bad. The guitarist and bass player are wearing below the knee shorts.
Sonic Youth - Drunken Butterfly: I had come to the conclusion over the weekend that Kim gordon was actually shite (based on 'a thousand leaves' - It's just kiiiiiittennnnn etc). She is gigantic in this. SY at their best.
REM - Half a world away: Overly sincere, trying desperately to be more credible than anyone has ever been. Stipe's voice is stunning.
Rage against the machine - Bullet in the head: the biggest surprise of watching this show was that this was one of the highlights. Uber-tight, catchy, adolescent and rocks like a tank. The guitar player is a genius.
Dinosaur Jnr - Get me: Genius. Not too much soloing either. the whole song just seems to fall out of J Mascis
Sugar - Helpless: A band this disinterested in performing would not get anywhere near the TV these days. Pretty boring.
Smashing Pumpkins - Rhinonceros: I had forgotten how good some of the stuff off Gish was. The mix of trippy psych stuff and full on rock is a winner here. Feedback festival at the end is quite cool and ends the show nicely.

The Word: Blur doing "Popscene", Stereolab "French Disko", Dinosaur Jr. refusing to stop playing "Start Choppin'", L7 performing "Pretend We're Dead" (i think) ending with the lead singer taking down her trousers and undies while the drumkit collapses in the background, a handful of kids who looked like they were expecting to see some hip-hop/dance act grooving along to Pixies doing "Cecilia Ann/Allison".

The most famous Late Show moment is surely The Stone Roses barrelling into "Made Of Stone" (was it?) and tripping the volume circuits. "Bloody amateurs," shouted Brown as Tracey MacLeod tried desperately to cover.
That's on the Stone Roses video i have

The Beat had some great stuff on it, if anyone remembers that?
― Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 7 April 2008 00:41 (seventeen years ago)
And that show Naked City I think it was called had some good stuff too.
― Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 7 April 2008 00:42 (seventeen years ago)
The Beat had The Jesus Lizard miming but with all the members switched round.
Naked City had Mark E Smith telling Caitlin Moran that he'd fucked more women than she'd had hot dinners.
