I'll go with brits trying to sound like yanks, but to be honest, both kinda annoy me, especially if it involves music from the past 15 or so years.

British Invasion singers singing with American accents, C
Dumbfuck shit brains of North America who think affecting a British accent makes them sound smart, D

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

English screamo bands affecting Yank accents (cf Lostprophets)- DUD

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Brits singing with "transatlantic" accents - the worst. HELLO ROBBIE.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Elvis Costello's faux-yank.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the Stones did it well, too.

maypang (maypang), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Or just Jagger did, I guess.

maypang (maypang), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Van Morrison in Them did it great!

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

the dude from 400 blows does it. just makes me laugh

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Cleveland-born Stiv Bator (Dead Boys/Lords of the New Church) was especially guilty of this from time to time.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

the Busted boys do this and it sounds whiny.

the emo-looking one from blink 182 strangles his vowels and end up sounding mid-atlantic/lloyd grossman.

lid, Wednesday, 3 March 2004 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, the one thing that would really improve Busted is not doing this. On the other hand I'm not sure pop-punk in a British accent can 'work'.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

robert pollard was a better singer back when he used to occasionally appropriate a british accent. it was part of his whole uniform in the late 80s/early 90s, and it was classic.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

the outfield - were so yanky corporate rawk

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The little one from the Rapture is so guilty of this. Slavish imitate it all, dick!

J2Dancer, Wednesday, 3 March 2004 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

fake British accents are one of life's little pleasures. (except Madonna's which irks me to no end for some reason).

Yeah, I was going to say that I don't mind it so much on either side of the coin as long as the singer's *singing.* When she's talking and the accent doesn't go away, it makes me nuts.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I love fake British accents. As for Brits singing with fake American accents, I can usually clearly do without, although The Records did in a quite charming way on "Starry Eyes" and some other late 70s hits.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Weird. That song always sounded pretty British to me.

maypang (maypang), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

On the other hand I'm not sure pop-punk in a British accent can 'work'.

It works best with fake British accents, though. Green Day to thread.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

What the hell does an American accent sound like? Americans HAVE no accents!!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Pete Shelley is in tears.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 3 April 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

And others from back then. The Rezillos sound great in a Scots accent, and you couldn't do "Right to Work" in an American accent.

I quite like Steve Malkmus doing English folk rock on Pig Lib.

Baravelli. (Jake Proudlock), Sunday, 4 April 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Bryan McLean and Arthur Lee - CLASSIC!

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 5 April 2004 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 5 April 2004 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

"Revenge" may well be one of my favorite songs of all time, so I guess I'm gonna HAVE to go with Americans pretending to be Brits over the alternative.

Thanks for putting that link there, DB!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 5 April 2004 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Was Tim Roth trying for an American accent in Reservoir Dogs?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 5 April 2004 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't thiiiink so. Don't they call him a limey once in that? I think that guy's kind of like Richard Burton (or Arnold Schwarznegger) where he just keeps his normal accent and they ignore it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 5 April 2004 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

British singers singing in American accents? That's like 99.99999% of ALL British singers - in contrast, American singers singing in British accents hardly ever happens

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 5 April 2004 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

tell that to moy ed

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 5 April 2004 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

why can't you hear a british accent when someone truly british sings???

oogachuka, Monday, 5 April 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

You can. Morrissey, Dido, Richard Thompson, Mike Skinner, Damon Albarn etc etc. Not to mention Ken Dodd.

Baravelli. (Jake Proudlock), Monday, 5 April 2004 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I go with American But I must admit that WILL YOUNG (British singer)is the best!!!!
