Help Me Understand the Googlers, Please...

They have been almost universally deemed "classic."
They are always good for a chuckle.
And there are a number of threads that have been started by Googlers that go on to discuss the phenomenon...

...but I still can't find any explanation as to how these people who end up at this site come to believe they are actually WRITING the artist they are interested in (!).

How is this level of delusion / confusion possible?

Please help me understand.

And when you are finished, Pfarrell, HOLLA AT MMEE / pag3 m3!!!!!!! LUv YOU lets mayk baybies 2gethar

I'm convinced quite a few such posts are just bored regulars / lurkers (and I'm not talking about the obvious posts from folks that stay logged in).

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i think he meant AFarrell that time

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't understand either Ben but I used to get email from these sort of people too.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

C'mon, Ben, you're not fooling us - I know you wrote that mash note to Craig Wedren.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I got sent a cellphone number after my response to the David Banner Googler on the "relationships" thread! If you read what I posted there, it's actually a bit scary.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

But why do the Googlers only ever want to speak to Missy, Kanye, Pharrell, and sometimes Cassidy?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, who else is there? Sting?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously though, this is a good question. I am baffled myself.

scott m (mcd), Thursday, 4 March 2004 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm convinced quite a few such posts are just bored regulars / lurkers
And yet, that would not make them any less classic; just classic for a different reason.

Back to the question. I answer by posing my own questions:
Why do people shop at WalMart?
Why do people like Michael Bolton?
Why do some people think highly of George W Bush?

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 4 March 2004 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Everything is so cheap at Walmart. I got the dvd of The Last Of The Red Hot Lovers starring Alan Arkin for, like, 3 dollars. The DVD players are like 30 dollars!

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:09 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah anyone who can't figure out why people shop at wal-mart might wanna try going without the trustfund for three days

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

in many towns, Walmart is the only option

oops (Oops), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I think some peoople (maybe especially very young kids) have very naive ideas about search engines.

I have seen this happen on other boards as well. We tried to explain to some kid that we really weren't talent scouts, or couldn't give him some star's phone number, but they just responded with something like, "I know this is the right place to ask, because Yahoo sent me here," or whatever.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

blount otm. I can afford not to shop there (there isn't one near me anyway), but I'm not going to wave my finger at someone shopping there when they are trying to support a family on $15,000 less than what I make.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh my lord, Ben. Your initial posting is the funniest thing I've ever read in ILM. Ever. Or maybe it's the pillzzz talkin'. Anybody know anything about Nas Baby mama? Holla at me! PEAAACEW!

Helen, Thursday, 4 March 2004 05:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to Wal-Mart with a friend of mine visiting from London. I couldn't get her out of there, she was utterly amazed by how cheap everything was, and how much stuff they had.

Blood and sparkles (bloodandsparkles), Thursday, 4 March 2004 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

WASSUP KRAFTWERK? WANTED TO SAY I ALWAYS CRANK UP YOUR MUSIC IN MY SUV...I WANTED TO ASK YOU ONE OR TWO QUESTIONS...ONE DO YOU HAVE A GIRLFRIEND...AND TWO DID YOU HAVE A ONE TRUE LOVE? I WANNA HAVE YOUR ROBOTS DAWG!!!!!!!!

COMPUTERLOVE (Fabfunk), Thursday, 4 March 2004 09:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i heard jay-z's "always be my sunshine" a couple weeks ago and got excited about the loop but when i found out it was kraftwerk i was kinda bummed. i was hoping it was some crazy funk pop tune i hadn't heard. i mean, kraftwerk's cool and all but i wanted some super duper popper, y'know?

computerlove - txt me, etc.

brian badword (badwords), Thursday, 4 March 2004 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure the conversational, over familiar tone helps.

Like, someone will say something like 'Pharrel can be a bit of a pretty boy' sometimes and people go 'they must know him'. Or something.

Plus, artists do google for their own names. At least the ones I know.

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Thursday, 4 March 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Rockist is OTM I think.

Some of the search engines boast about natural language parsers etc - a load of bollocks basically but it means that someone can type in "I Need Pharells Homepage" or whatever and think they're actually getting to his 'personal site'.

Also it suddenly strikes me that the "I Love" bit of ILM may play a part here...

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 4 March 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Yahoo Search seems to be most to blame.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 4 March 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

A big HELLO to all my fans!!

-- Elton John (Elto...), May 24th, 2002.

that one still cracks me up on the daily.

brian badword (badwords), Thursday, 4 March 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

durr that should say elton@googling.my.fans for full funny factor effect.

brian badword (badwords), Thursday, 4 March 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Almost as classic are the randoms in the ILM slsk chatroom, all of whom want to know what ILM stands for. Either that or offering us fleishpenis.
