The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Thursday, 4 March 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, they were voted by online fans

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Thursday, 4 March 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

any truly "indie" canadian on the internet would have voted Nickleback best group.

because that would be ironic.

Famous Athlete, Thursday, 4 March 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

who is "psyched" about the mimis

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 4 March 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Thursday, 4 March 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

The Tragically Hip was ROBBED!!

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 4 March 2004 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Dashboard Confessional, international indie?

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 4 March 2004 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

They do speak the international language of WAAAAAAH!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 4 March 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Electronica artist/group: Fidgital

Worst name ever.

maypang (maypang), Thursday, 4 March 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Since when is Roch Voisine considered indie?
Who is Fidgital? I've never heard of them.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 4 March 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I really do like that Great Lake Swimmers album.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Thursday, 4 March 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Fidgital is a horrible attempt at Boards Of Canada. Don't even bother.

And yeah, that Great Lake Swimmers is just stunning.

twitchy, Thursday, 4 March 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to admit I like the choice of Alexisonfire for Best Video. Screamo that's actually fairly decent. (Kill me now.)

David A. (Davant), Thursday, 4 March 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Having been to the "Indies" show, its more about the free booze then the awards. Though the Rheos did a good set at last years "ceremony".

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 7 March 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

god this is embarassing... [currently renouncing canadian citizenship]

ken taylrr, Sunday, 7 March 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

No, this is embarrasing.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 7 March 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Star of this classic film.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 7 March 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i had to go to this, and it really was as bad as it sounds. the only decent performance was by alexisonfire. fidgital (who i'd never heard of either) struck me as fortysomething blue man group fans who make 'neato' art-electronica for guys like bill nye. but evidently they are better than richie hawtin.

dashboard confessional won best international indie act b/c they are on tvt in canada. another artist who is on tvt who was also nominated in that category: lil jon.

the night's worst performance came from an indie band called the arcade fire. their lead singer wore a suit and alternated between pained oberstian mewlings and twitchy leg howling into the void SCREAMS. one of their other band members had a single drumstick (for the bass drum draped around his neck) in one hand and a tambourine in the other. he marched around the stage like a toy soldier on ludes and banged things against a lot of other things. finally, the keyboardist, a girl, wore bunny ears.

i'm serious, it was an indie parody of a parody of a parody. anyway, after their performance they won a $2000 award from the cbc or something so i guess we can all expect some new music from them soon!

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 7 March 2004 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

in the canadian people's defense, please remember that their music industry--especially the indie side of things-- is supported almost solely by the federal government. imagine how shitty indie rock/electronic dance music in the US would be if it were given a handsome push by Bush et al.

ken taylrr, Sunday, 7 March 2004 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

well, who said canadian indie music was shitty?

we're talking about the awards, which mean about as much w/r/t to the general state of indie music in canada as the darwin awards do to macrame owlmakers in northern maine

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 8 March 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

point well taken. i definitely don't think all of canadian indie music is shitty. i love a ton of it. BUT, in the instances where cancon/mapl/videofact and all the other government-supported entities-- i'm guessing here, but i bet the indie awards also benefit from one of the aforementioned--are involved, the music is usually pretty shitty, mostly because it's performed by bands who are more concerned with 'trying to crack the US market' than actually writing and playing decent songs. destroyer, hot hot heat, and the other worthwhile canadian bands you hear of didn't sign to sub pop or merge cuz they got some federally forced push to have their music played on radio in buttfuck, alberta. they 'made it' (i know, bad term) because they're actually pretty damn good. i suppose this is generally off topic though, and for the rant, i apologize.

ken taylrr, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Well if I remeber FACTOR and CBC are heavily involved, I think your reading too much into the musical urges that push the winners.

And whats wrong with bands that signed to Subpop like The Constatines?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 04:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I wasn't at the show so I can't say anything about how the arcade fire sound live, but their self titled ep is promising. broken social scene sounding.

rsowen, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 04:34 (twenty-one years ago)

nothing at all wrong with constantines signing to sub pop. exactly my point. they got there without the push of FACTOR and whoever.. they, like many others, are good enough to make it on their on steam. it's the shit ones like Our Lady Peace who get shoved down the throats of canadians and eventually (like, 10 years later) have one record that kinda sorta does something south of the border.

ken taylrr, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 07:36 (twenty-one years ago)

looking back at the winners' list now, and seeing that hot hot heat are actually the first band mentioned, kinda throws off my argument a little. though, they and weakerthans are the only bands there that don't make Canada seem like a local music scene

ken taylrr, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Roch Voisine fits into a local music scene? Where are these Acadians in Upper Canada and do they have any Clancys?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

huh?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 28 March 2004 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I was at the awards. It was pretty dull and I agree, most of the acts sucked shit. The rapping dude should have been shot right there on the spot. I thought Arcade Fire's first song (not so much their second) kicked serious ass. They totally stole the show with that one. They had 100 times more stage presence than any of the others. Their second song kind of died out but.. whatever. I've heard of Fidgital. I have a few friends that are die-hard fans. They're a bit too poppy for my tastes. I don't even know why they were int he electronica category because they're completely pop.

Peace.
