Skavoovie. Day late, short a few bucks, but who cares?

David Raposa, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

some c&w I can stand but jokey c&w may possibly be the worst musical sub-genre ever invented - total dross.

philT, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nope, I've just never liked him. The Handsome Family write alt- country with humor, he writes it with jokes, and I've been the two- drink minumum type.

scott p., Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

*I've never been* -- ooh, I need some sleep.

scott p., Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Country music. I prefer it to rap but nevertheless really not my favourite genre. Though this song is a little different from the standard country song. But I would not be able to say where exactly. A bit of pedal steel is not so bad sometimes. Country is ok as an element of the music as with Giant Sand and Calexico for example but on its own it is far too conventional and boring for my ears.

alex in mainhattan, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Some Country's boring, like this track.

I like Brad Paisley.

Cryosmurf, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In a world buzzing with too much information, this is the sort of thing I have to tune out.

Mark, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i can tell who this is and who contributed it just from the comments.

ethan, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why in the world would anyone want to listen to this smug, unfunny junk? The only thing it's got going for it is the guitar playing, which is quite competent -- I'm a sucker for a well-played pedal steel, I'll freely admit. But otherwise, blech -- this is like They Might Be Giants with cowboy hats and highly-paid session musicians. (And a girl instead of a boy.) Really dreadful lyrics. It's country music for yuppies and NPR junkies who get off on looking down their nose at "those rural types". Condescending and insulting.

Phil, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

wait this is a girl? okay maybe i don't know who it is.

ethan, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This has a boy singer and a girl singer. (Sorry I wasn't clear on that.)

Phil, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

since i can't listen to mp3s i've decide to try and figure out who it is from the descriptions so DON'T LIE.

ethan, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ethan, to try clarify my post w/o hinting: There is a boy and girl vocalist, but typically they don't perform together. I recognize his voice, but not hers.

scott p., Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ethan, did you see my post about how to convert MP3s into things that people on Quadras can listen to?

(Of course, if you don't have any spare hard disk space, that's another issue entirely.)

Phil, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I WUV girl/boy country duets. And what about this song is jokey? Aside from "but other than that" at the very end? Just because they've got a good attitude doesn't mean they're smug or something. It sounds heartfelt and sincere. I like the pedal steel too but the main guitar line is a bit nu-Duane Eddyish for my tastes. Maybe that's it - it's the guitar that's too jokey.

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

phil, thank you, i use soundapp and have converted mp3s that i simply HAD to hear before, but i'm usually not going to spend an hour downloading and an hour converting unless it's an mp3 of christ speaking or something.

ethan, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i love this song, i think it is clever but of course i suggested it ;)

anthony, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That guitar! I don't normally associate boy/girl duets solely with country, but that twangy, bendy guitar I do. Its overuse in country songs is what makes the song sound jokey to me. The conversation at the end is funny.

palpable, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Good stuff, Anthony. The music's good, the tune's fun, the pedal steel sounds sweet, the central pun is a fine one, the lyrics are sad but funny - you can tell why these two characters fell for each other as well as why they fight. Like a lot of country I wouldn't want to hear it often (though a lot of country I would). A thumbs up from me!

Tom, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i was right about who suggested it!

ethan, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've heard this before. The song's a bit too Jim Jarmusch, but the singing (especially her) and Sesame Street groove is great. Neal McCoy and Tim McGraw are a lot more condescending than "Saturday Afternoon Folk Show" fodder like this.

Kris, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Kelly Willis(?) and ?

gygax, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No guessing, please!

I listened to this once and then for a second time after I'd read that it was Anthony's choice. I hate most country music, and this doesn't really make it as one of the exceptions to that rule, although there's nothing particularly offensive here. The song is better than the arrangement, I suspect. (Idea for new thread: fans of this genre debating whether c&w in 00s is any better or worse than in any previous decade, are there any new artists to get excited about, etc. I would be an interested spectator anyway.)

ANTHONY!!!

David Raposa, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Its Robbie Fulks and Kelly Hogan .

anthonyeaston, Tuesday, 23 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i was right! i love robbie fulks.

ethan, Thursday, 25 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
The name of this song, by the way, is "Parallel Bars", off of _The Best of Robbie Fulks_.
