erlend oye - dj kicks

deserves its own thread, i think.

THIS IS SO FUCKING GOOD. i listened to it three times before work today!!

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 4 March 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

the whole section from cornelius to the track before villalobos is brilliance. his vocal contributions are perfect. i don't think i ever want to hear another san francisco style house track without a morrisey lyric on it ever again.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 4 March 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

"There is a Light That Never Goes Out" + "Poor Leno (Silikon Remix)" = brilliant.

"Always on My Mind" + "Metal Chix" = somehow more brilliant.

"I Need Your Love" + "I Need Your Love" = not so brilliant.

I love this mix. Almost perfect.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 4 March 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

This sounds intriguing. But!

How likely am I to enjoy it if I thought Erlend Oye's own music was some of the most horrible I've heard in the last 2 years?

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 4 March 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

He only sings on about a quarter of the tracks. I'd say it's still pretty likely.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 4 March 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i burnt out on this record way too quickly. that and, as i mentioned before, the ave d cut. still, better than it has any right being.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 4 March 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought Erlend Oye's own music was some of the most horrible I've heard in the last 2 years

if it's because you dislike his singing style i'd say maybe there'd be reason to worry. though he's pretty restrained - i knew many of the tracks beforehand and his contributions aren't jarring. he's more often intoning the lyrics than full-on belting them out. it's more miss kittin than louie austen (i don't know if those references make sense to you, tom).

i don't think the music has too much to do with oye's own music. i'm not at all familiar with kings of convenience or his solo work (though i plan to look into it, now). this mix is pretty much straight microhouse, on the downtempo/soft bedtime music end of the spectrum. from what i know of your taste i think you'd like that.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 4 March 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I reckon Double T would detest it, which is to say that he'll probably love it.

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

ok i was planning on spending some time this spring looking more closely into electric emo music like postal service, morr music, etc. but somehow i feel like oye's gone and made that stuff a bit redundant by accomplishing it in this context. obviously people have been there before (superpitcher comes to mind), it's just that this mix presents it as a really coherent statement.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Just say no to Emo.

(x-post vahid)

Born-Again Pubescent Undercover Pocket Nihilist Crochet Ninja (mjt), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, this really is much much better than it has any right to be.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i've even gotten over (mostly) the avenue d thing.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean, he sings "it's a fine day" and "cruel summer"...it's like a pocket history of gloopy dance vocals.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

blimey

assuming it's official, when is it out?

zebedee (zebedee), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

april/may

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Track list?

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

How likely am I to enjoy it if I thought Erlend Oye's own music was some of the most horrible I've heard in the last 2 years?

Speaking of just King Of Convenience here, or did you also dislike his dance/electronica oriented solo album from 2003?

Pet Shop Boys

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, right. obviously.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

did i miss any other covers?

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know why ILM people wouldn't like his vocals on this - they kind of remind me of Arthur Russell. Less expressive, but same tone.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 4 March 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

steely dan house

that's !exactly! what a lot of it sounds like. all the talk about MOR house that was going around when "digital love" came out ---> leads directly to this cd.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 4 March 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I am stunned by the excellent tracklist.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 4 March 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

yes but is mine more stunning or is dominique's?

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 4 March 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

also it looks like areal is blowing up (well, they kind of have already) - i keep seeing ADA's tracks everywhere ...

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 4 March 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

oh is what where i recognize the name from? did "lovelace" correct?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 4 March 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

this looks good

You know the trouble with record labels is they wait too long to release stuff and it ends up cutting into their sales.

This and the superpitcher should be out now!

hector (hector), Friday, 5 March 2004 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep Ada did Lovelaceas well as Blindhouse, which was on Triple R's mix for Kompakt.

Philippe (Philippe), Friday, 5 March 2004 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

funny thing about this mix is the "mixing consultation by" credit on the promo. (i forget who it's credited to.) does that mean that oye didn't actually mix it? even, like, digitally?

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

it's like that nicolette one, where plaid did the mixing.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha which they didn't even do, they just recorded little adjoining interludes. Weirdos.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah but that mix is SO killer and has some amazing stuff that i've never seen anywhere else ...

vahid (vahid), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

That Minizza track is beautiful.. do they have anything else out?

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

(x-post)It's got a really good track list, yes, but its a total mess as a mix (why she get Plaid to do it anyway, was there a shortage of DJs in London that week?)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm. i think they were producing her album at the time?

vahid (vahid), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

it's weird bjork's never done that. maybe she's too big to do a mix? i expect when her career starts going downhill we'll get one (mixed by mark bell or something)

vahid (vahid), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

It'd be Herbert these days.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Matthew Barney's doing the cover art though.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 5 March 2004 04:32 (twenty-one years ago)

she did a mix for the breezeblock, didn't she?

toby (tsg20), Friday, 5 March 2004 07:08 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
just came across this here.
i was involved in working out the technical side for that mix.
so if you have any questions, feel free to ask me about it.

phonique, Monday, 29 March 2004 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

what did you do?

RJG (RJG), Monday, 29 March 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a question, phonique. What does T.I and T.I.P stand for also what is his real name?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 29 March 2004 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah what did you do?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 29 March 2004 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I've read somewhere that Erlend is going to do dj-set at "skansen" in Oslo, where he is supposed to be singing and mixing at the same time. That could be pretty funny! I've seen him a couple of time doing some sets, and he's the most funny dj i've ever seen. Looks cool also, uhm...

V, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

just went to check out a four tet concert yesterday, and then erlend øye himself showed up as support artist, playing his songs on acoustic guitar only, taking requests and all. during four tet's set, øye sat in the corner of the stage and handed out beer to the audience and took pictures of them. what a lovely guy.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 10:40 (twenty-one years ago)

if you like the album check out Star You Star Me feat Erlend Oye's 'A Place In My Heart' coming out May 2004 on Kickin Records... with mixes from Jori Hulkkonen and Mr Velcro Fastener - you need this record... check www.kickinmusic.com for more details

steve jones, Friday, 2 April 2004 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I just listened again, it still sounds like "falcon" to me. but perhaps I'm being harsh.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:32 (twenty years ago)

it's clearly 'Falke' pronounced 'Falk-a'

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:33 (twenty years ago)

OMG HERE'S FREDDY FALCO WITH ROCK ME AMAYER DEUS

Frankerlend On Oyece (blueski), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:34 (twenty years ago)

haha, maybe he pronounces it differently on the promo.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:35 (twenty years ago)

fred FALCON is an awesome name mind.

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 20:10 (twenty years ago)

seven months pass...
Ronan should avoid Erick Bieritz's most recent Stycast, wherein Todd Burns introduces a Royksopp remix by "Alan Brax-ay and Fred Falk-ay."

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

Has there been a 2005 equivalent to this mix yet? (poppy, fun, easy to like)

jergins (jergins), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 01:10 (twenty years ago)

The Moonbootica mix DJ Sounds Good is poppy, fun and easy like, but more in a Fatboy Slim way than a Corny Indie Fuxx way.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

Erol Alkan-Bugged Out Mix, perhaps?

It is quite hard and not as wistful as Erland Oye maybe but it is alot of big records well put together. Plus the Bugged In chilled out CD is probably as good as if not better than the uptempo one.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 10:38 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
hi dere

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 6 May 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

i find both the hot chip and four tet dj kicks pretty uneven. heven't heard erlend's.

negotiable, Sunday, 6 May 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

I listened to this for the irst time like 3 weeks ago, and in my opinion, at least, take out tracks 3-11 and I'd just love this forever. (as a side note,I had a bunch of loose mp3s before hearing this in full, which was stuff like so weit wie noch nie, the poor leno remix, metalchix, etc. so the long stretch of avenue D and the rapture etc was both suprising in a way and kind of tedious)

mehlt, Sunday, 6 May 2007 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

this has rubicon on it right? i love that song.

negotiable, Sunday, 6 May 2007 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

two years pass...

I'm very late to the game. I was reading RA's feature on the best mixes of the 00's and this came on #18 I think. Finally gave it a spin today and have to admit I'm very impressed. Very indie-dance-pop friendly. I think I could play this to my acquaintances who hate electronica without hearing a complaint.

Are there any other mix albums in the same style that you can recommend me?

Moka, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 23:55 (fifteen years ago)

This comes close, I think: http://www.discogs.com/Modernist-Collectors-Series-Pt-1-Popular-Songs/release/764442

Not brilliant, but nice enough (lou), Thursday, 28 January 2010 00:14 (fifteen years ago)

or this?

http://www.discogs.com/DJ-Koze-All-People-Is-My-Friends/release/225367?ev=rr

i used to get right het-up in the olden days. i don't think i've posted much more than a [this is good] or a [this is not as good as the last record] to an ilm album thread for maybe two years. old age!

i listened to this about a month ago and really enjoyed it for about 25 minutes, then got a bit irritated then liked it again for villalobos then switched it off because the end is pretty dull.

jed_, Thursday, 28 January 2010 00:28 (fifteen years ago)

RA's feature on the best mixes of the 00's and this came on #18 I think.

the playgroup and tiga dj kicks too (both in the RA top 50)

jed_, Thursday, 28 January 2010 00:45 (fifteen years ago)

(xx-post) Thanks! This is GREAT! And it's cool that they got Dave Clarke and Michael Mayer to write the blurbs for their own mixes.

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 28 January 2010 00:47 (fifteen years ago)

yeah RA Top 50 mixes needs its own thread like 2 minutes ago.

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Thursday, 28 January 2010 01:06 (fifteen years ago)

Thanks jed. Will check them out. Lots of stuff I dont recognize but vol. 3 has some amazing balearic picks.

Moka, Thursday, 28 January 2010 01:45 (fifteen years ago)

Already checked the Eskimo and Dj Koze mixes and they're wonderful.

Haven't had any luck with 'The Modernist: Collector's Series'. Can't find a download link anywhere. Boomkat and amazon don't have it for digital sale either.

Moka, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:24 (fifteen years ago)

it seemed like that one, and the kaos + sal p mix that was the other 'collectors series', disappeared pretty quick. which is a shame because the latter is ace. dude putting together collectors' series was involved with dj-kicks at the very start apparently.

unicorn tear da club up (haitch), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:35 (fifteen years ago)

around the same time, a dude from le hammond inferno (who i don't know at all) posted a mix free for download that i think has the same appeal, it had like seelenuft - manila, and "we are your friends" about two years before was a hit, and a lot of vocal tracks generally. i remember it as really fun. i could upload it for you somewhere some time in the next few days if you are interested.

men lie, women lie, hips don't (zvookster), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:36 (fifteen years ago)

Moka (and whoever else might be interested)- I can hook you up with a zip of the Modernist mix if you like.

zvookster, lou: Yes, thank you! hook me up with those two mixes please! my email is motelmoka(at)gmail.com I'm sending you a message from here (ilxor) as well. Thanks!

Moka, Friday, 5 February 2010 20:34 (fifteen years ago)

lou, me too please if you don't mind. it would be at "emailnp(at)yahoo.co.uk". thanks!!

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Saturday, 6 February 2010 00:38 (fifteen years ago)

Erlend's DJ Kicks is probably THE record that shaped my listening tastes from the age of 15 onwards. Still listen to it all the time.

Dwight Yorke, Saturday, 6 February 2010 22:05 (fifteen years ago)

Oh yeah, question: where does the Intuition a capella come from? I swear Feist did a version on one of her albums.

Dwight Yorke, Saturday, 6 February 2010 22:07 (fifteen years ago)

It's nothing short of great, but if tracks 3-9 were taken out, it's be a true masterpiece.

EDB, Saturday, 6 February 2010 22:21 (fifteen years ago)

just an opinion: lots of great tracks but the selection/mixing is too jarring and unfocused; a lot of it seems like he just took a bunch of his new favorite songs and tried to make a mix out of em..

but this:
It's nothing short of great, but if tracks 3-9 were taken out, it's be a true masterpiece.

that'd be taking out "if i ever feel better" and "rubicon" which are two of the best tracks on there.. i'm sure lots'll rep for "i feel love" and that cornelius rmx if pretty awes too (albeit, totally out of place)

guammls (QE II), Saturday, 6 February 2010 23:51 (fifteen years ago)

djh, Tuesday, 20 August 2013 20:58 (twelve years ago)

two years pass...

I love this album! What are some other albums that sound like this? Is this what they call "microhouse"?

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 1 October 2015 10:37 (nine years ago)

A lot of the second half (from 2 After 909 onwards) is microhouse yes, but as a mix it's so stylistically all-over-the-place that you'd need to say which bits are working particularly well for you.

Matt DC, Thursday, 1 October 2015 11:09 (nine years ago)

Like, what the heck is "So Weit Wie Noch Nie"? That's on Kompakt. I'd love to check out those Total compilations but there's like 20 of them.

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 1 October 2015 11:32 (nine years ago)

So Weit Wie Noch Nie is microhouse as well, yes. Totals 3 and 4 are probably the ones you should start with - they were firmly up and running by that point but before the point when they started repeating themselves.

Michael Mayer's two early 00s mix albums (Immer and Fabric 13) are both essential as well.
