DJ Mixes: POX

What are some truly classic DJ mixes? I've only heard a ew of them ever, so I really don't know what makes a good DJ mix from a bad one. Let's see, I guess my personal favorite would be DJ Z-Trip and DJ P's Uneasy Listening, Volume One. And there's DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist's Brainfreeze and Product Placement. Those are okay. There's also the Avalanches' Gimix mix and the Stanton Warriors' The Stanton Session, which introduced the world to the fabulous Mike "The Streets" Skinner. And... uhhh... those are the only ones I know of! So could somebody with a better ear for dance music than me fill me in on what are the REAL ten best DJ mixes of all time?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not a huge fan of mixes, but:

Jeff Mills -- Live at the Liquid Room
JDJ -- Coldcut

are in a league of their own. EASILY the best I've heard.
Also recommended:
Richie Hawtin -- Decks, EFX and 909 (vastly overrated, but still good)
Darren Emerson -- Psychotrance II
Strictly Kev -- Blech
And I don't have my CD's here, so that's all I can come up with from memory at this moment ...

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

obviously you miss out on huge swathes with just those, but i'd be pretty happy if they were all i was allowed on the proverbial island

i like

Eskimo 1-3
Dixon OffLimits 1 and 2
Danny Krivit, Grassroots
DJ Food and DK, SolidSteel
Mayer - Immer

cant really think of any others.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

adam freeland ; on tour ( great breaks mix)
freestylers: f.s.u.k - party breaks and d'n'b and somne ska

toe-foo (toe-foo), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

what are these Eskimo 1-3s that jed speaks of?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

dunno, but check this: http://www.discogs.com/label/Eskimo_Recordings

quality label...

tricky disco (disco stu), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

they are mixes.

If I can be so bold as to skip the 1-3 Eskimos let me recommend Ivan Smagghe's Death Disco mix on Eskimo. For my money better than the 1-3.

Alternatively How to Kill the DJ Part One by Smagghe also.

anything by the Glimmer Twins.

Archigram-Waves II

And whatever that Crosstown Rebels mix is called, "Rebel Futurism", maybe that's the name I'm drunk. It's ace though, I've heard it even though I don't own it.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

ha, i'm drunk too and all i want to listen to is crystal city by alan braxe and fred falke on repeat

tricky disco (disco stu), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I just put it on now. It is very Daft Punk!

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a song which says "imagine a life without people!!!!"

BAH.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

no, it doesn't!! it's perfect for the golf rave.

tricky disco (disco stu), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

it's the third track on the rubicon single...

tricky disco (disco stu), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 03:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I love it, but it's a city record I meant. Not a people record. We so need to do a golf rave.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Arena too, though it is more "I have just won the most amazing toaster and dishwasher".

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah, it's definitely a city record...

plaid pants at the ready.

tricky disco (disco stu), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

and rubicon is the song for while we use the dishwasher.

or maybe some drum and bass would be appropriate for the rinse cycle

tricky disco (disco stu), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

or perhaps "washing machine"

tricky disco (disco stu), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

revulva-i am the fly=shaving + drinking a beer

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 03:26 (twenty-one years ago)

junior boys:birthday = searching for flights + drinking a beer

what's the revulva tune like?

tricky disco (disco stu), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

be careful with that razor. no nicks allowed on the golf course.

tricky disco (disco stu), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

oh it's ace, it makes me think of girls that don't exist.

currently kiko-italomatic (kiko and the hacker remix)-spilling stuff on your carpet and not caring, people shouting.

though I'm actually sitting and doing nothing.

we're so making this thread the BEST EVER.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 03:32 (twenty-one years ago)

(I have a divot repair kit)

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 03:32 (twenty-one years ago)

it's all about the skin care

np: chicago - claro intelecto which is indeed a TUNE, it's got the loosest drum programming evah, like all of smallville condensed into 5 minutes, the languid robot dance

incidentally it features in a mix that belongs on this thread:

tricky disco live at the tricky disco 15 march 2004

ha

tricky disco (disco stu), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

And whatever that Crosstown Rebels mix is called, "Rebel Futurism", maybe that's the name I'm drunk. It's ace though, I've heard it even though I don't own it.

-- Ronan (ronan.fitzgerald6NOSPA...), March 17th, 2004.

This my my favorite right now. It does rock. Grey area?, not necessarily mash-up. Yeah, great choice!!! Electro, post-punk,disco-fied, electroclash bent at times. Yeah.

cRaiG (craig!), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 03:50 (twenty-one years ago)

tracklisting is key here. I left mine at work, ergghh.

cRaiG (craig!), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 04:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it true that Claro Intelecto (sp?) is actually Mark Stewart?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 06:29 (twenty-one years ago)

eleven months pass...
just picked up :

"z-trip - live in LA"

massive scratch-athon that incorps a lot of rock classics .. and some fine mashups .. tis ok .. BUT ..

am i alone wishing he would just shut the f*ck up ?

damn. the constant harping on detracts from the fine (if overly commercial/familiar) selection .. are all his mixes featuring his vocals skills or is this specific to this release ?

i realise its part of his set - as there is a snippet of him doing his thing in the product placement dvd .. and its exactly the same kinda crowd pumping when he drops in Nirvana ..

but it doesn't half get annoying ..
