Who was the most messianic lead (wo)man/m.c. ever?

When the lights went down, the beer went back and that chilling stir started to happen...and then something else happened. The lead person of this group took on proportions greater than the sum of his/her every rationale for being there? Worship at my feet, children, for I am...

henrietta smith (Henry), Thursday, 4 March 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Perry Farrell...this is the only person to do this for me, to any extent.

p.j. (Henry), Thursday, 4 March 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick Cave

kephm, Thursday, 4 March 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought Mick Jagger (the template for the rock n' roll lead man IMO) would do it for me, but I didn't see him until the "Steel Wheels" Tour and I was in row Z of the Gator Bowl. I needed binoculars just to look at his "package" in the giant vid screens. It's hard to flagellate oneself at someone's feet from that far away.

p.j. (Henry), Thursday, 4 March 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Did you feel that way 'bout Sandman then, or in retrospect because of his death? Or were you actually there at the show when he died?

p.j. (Henry), Thursday, 4 March 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

At the risk of being entirely predictable....Jaz Coleman.

Roger in Mokum (Roger T), Thursday, 4 March 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I will agree that Perry Farrel, despite being a wanker of some note, does have an amazing amount of stage presence.

Even under torture I shall not reveal what the above pic initially reminded me of.
I.e. before I spotted, with a jolt, a semblance of human face there somewhere. Eventually.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Friday, 5 March 2004 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Dunno, but when it comes to looking like Jesus Christ, nobody has ever come closer than Michael Hutchence, even though Dave Gahan did a serious attempt in 1993....
