define rockable however you want

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 4 March 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Lots. But if i gave examples i'd be here all day. Well, longer than usual anyway.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 4 March 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Quite so. For this split second, "Plug It In."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 4 March 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Orbital's "Satan" rocks harder than 99% of all rock.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 4 March 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I kind of saw this coming.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 4 March 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

(well, I mean "dance" and "rock n' roll" are pretty synonymous in root, you know, which is why this is all kinda funny anyway)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 4 March 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

When did dance music become "non-rockable" anyway?

When did rock music become "non-danceable" anyway?

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 4 March 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Disco? Homophobia? Satan? Parents?

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 4 March 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Hippies. Drugs.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 4 March 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you serious, Rockist? Do you mean that hippies -> drugs -> staring into space and laid out on the floor stoned/tripping -> not conducive to dancing?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 4 March 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I think developments in the late 60's in general tended to make rock less danceable, including the sort of drugs being taken. Maybe also the tendency toward longer soloing.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 4 March 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Which is more danceable, early Beatles or late Beatles? I'd say early (though even there I don't find it all that inviting as dance music). The trip, progressive side of things tended to put the damper on danceability.

Of course, Deadheads are a great big counter-example staring me in the face.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 4 March 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I can see that happening. However, from the time I've spent in SF over the last year or so, I find that the hippies will dance to anything and everything, drugs or no. For instance, I saw Mogwai (!) there last fall and people were dancing all over the place.

I think the indie rock scene has been way more dance-phobic, which would date from punk/post-punk times which led to slam-dancing/moshing/etc. in place of dancing.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 4 March 2004 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost, yeah the Deadheads and the West Coast jam band scene is the Great Counterexample, but again, that's a more recent thing (compared to the c. 1967 genesis).

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 4 March 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I find lots of bits of Underworld quite "rocking".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 4 March 2004 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

well, who invented "authentic rock"? And when did the followers of "authentic rock" take out the original "rock" roots, meat, and bones and just leave the "authentic" batter?

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 4 March 2004 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to say Ministry in both threads.

rainman (rainman), Thursday, 4 March 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Model 500 is about as heavy as Black Flag

J2Dancer, Thursday, 4 March 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I blame Peter Frampton.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 4 March 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

taking it very literally...dance music with guitars, including:

Cerrone-Rocket In My Pocket
Aural Exciters-My Boy Lollipop
that Cassius single from a year or two ago, "I feel like I wanna be, inside of you..."
The Rapture-House of Jealous Lovers
Hollywood Party, a One Way Begin Cekic 12" that's totally awesome

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 4 March 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Apollo Four Forty to thread ;)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 5 March 2004 02:16 (twenty-one years ago)

(Geir, I have a dare for you on the Dare You thread.) (No particular ax to grind, either.)

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Friday, 5 March 2004 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't help but feel like "rocking out" whenever I hear some of the tougher Kompakt releases, especially of the schaffel variety...

Bohner (bohner), Friday, 5 March 2004 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah what's particularly great about the glammy shuffletech numbers ("I Walk", "Monstertruckdriver" etc.) is that they sound completely rock without resorting to guitars; it's all in the groove itself.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 5 March 2004 04:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I just want put foward the like of Lords of Acid, Massive Attack and Orbital for consideration.

sublimityeternal (sublimityeternal), Friday, 5 March 2004 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)
