Amber (6 on Wednesday) (as I flicked through the LPs in Oxfam) : "I'm after you.."
Me: "Why?"
Amber: "I want to see if there's any Kate Bush in there"

So, she likes KB, my 'various artists' DVD with Zodiac Mindwarp, dickies, jam, (flick over the mission), and the usual Busted, hi-5 (australian s-club type "20 summats" for kids)

Alice (4 two days ago) on hearing "Coma Girl" joe strummer first time "Oh I like this!"
(Two weeks later) "Not this again!"
She turns teenage when Busted are on, likes ChaChaSlide, Franz Ferdinand, Grease, Strokes, that DVD I mentioned, and more Busted.

(I reckon I'm getting off lightly. What about youse Mums and Dads?)

Just me, then?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 5 March 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

My partner's daughter, although a lovely person in may ways, has quite poissbly the lamest musical taste of any teenager I have ever encountered, as I believe I may have mentioned before.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 5 March 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

And that last link, guess who's mentioned just below...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 5 March 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Kids like the Dickies. That's awesome Mark.

I don't have any kids, but my friend, who runs an indie record store does, and he always has to go into the mall CD store to buy his daughters what they want.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 5 March 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

That DVD has "Banana Splits" to make them laugh, and "Nights in white satin" which has them "Oh it's them again!"

Also, "Teenage Kicks" Undertones was on the radio last weekend, Alice was like "Oh, Busted do this one..." (i.e. knew it wasn't them)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 5 March 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

"Alice was like"Oh, Busted do this one..."...."

I hate to break this to you Mark, but I think your kids' influence may be affecting your speech / linguistic patterns!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 5 March 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

My son is 5 and has invented, or at least named, a musical genre. A couple of days before Christmas he was in theback of the car and sang "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" with such sweetness that if he were on national TV at that moment he would have been elected president. Then he said "I'm gonna make it an action song." He then sang the song again, fast, at the top of his lungs, throwing himself against the seat belt.

I reckon in a few more years, someone will start an ILM thread called "POX: Action Songs."

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Friday, 5 March 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm an ex northener... I say 'like' a lot, like.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 5 March 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you 'eck as like!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 5 March 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

This is a very sweet thread. My kid ain't born yet--s/he's due in mid May--but s/he has heard enough Mingus, dub, and Beefheart in utero to make me say/hope classic. I bet s/he's gonna love "action songs" as well...

M Specktor (M Specktor), Friday, 5 March 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

y'know, m, she will rebel by going for the sweetest sugarry po(o)p she can find.

nathalie (nathalie), Friday, 5 March 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

".... s/he has heard enough Mingus, dub, and Beefheart in utero...."

In Utero was Nirvana, not Beeefheart < runs away cackling insanely >

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 5 March 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a bit muffled in there...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 5 March 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I think even Don would accept the validity of "the momma heartbeat" under those conditions too.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 5 March 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

My nine-year old (soon to be 10 year-old) want the Offspring cd for his birthday. He saw the parental advisory sticker on it, and has asked for the edited version available at Walmart or Circuit City.
He also likes Good Charlotte and the Clash's London Calling album. He liked Jonathan Richman and the b 52s when he was younger. He think the rap music I play on the car radio is "ok," and he thinks the Latin and African music i play is boring and/or all sounds the same. Are there any parents out there with under 12 kids who have to deal with the fact that playing the Lil' Jon album or even the Kanye West and Outkast cds might expose your kids to words and phrases you'd rahter have them discover on their own when they're oh 13. My kid is going to become rockist unless I can find edited cds...

Steve Kiviat (Steve K), Friday, 5 March 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

What are all these dual standards about, eh? It's all very well bringing your daughters to the slaughter isn't it? Oh yes....

Sorry, lost the plot then for a moment

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 5 March 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

My daughter is 8 1/2 months old. She claps her hands and smiles, occasionally rocking back and forth, to three kinds of music: "Victoria," by The Kinks; most ska or rock steady; and the music that plays on NY1 during the weather forecast, which is sort of "magical snow falling' music. So, obviously her taste is classic so far.

Nemo (JND), Friday, 5 March 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Right under my nose (okay, actually some thirty c-metres away) is one of my daughter's cd-r's she had a friend make for her:
Sugarbabes, S Club 7, Britney, Annie Lennox, Melanie, Roxette, Celine Dion, Kerli, Vanilla Ninja, Avril Lavigne, Enya, The Rasmus, Lene Marlin, Terminaator (the latter is a dogawful pop-"rock" band, as my daughter generally tends to agree but she obviously likes *some* of their songs quite a bit).
The other day she consented to listen to The Who's "Behind Blue Eyes", didn't hate it, but apparently likes that cover vesion better.
My daughter Kadi is 16.

My gun-of-a-son Magunus will be 20 in May He's still kinda keen on Deftones, Korn, Tool, Perfect Circle. (There was a passionate rap phase of a coupla years in his mid/late teens) NIN is also an abiding love. Some of metal acts, and a few local bands we seem to be of interest to us both: Dimmu Borgir, Metro Luminal, eg.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 5 March 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

My son will be 5 in May. Some of his favorite stuff is: Gorillaz "Clint Eastwood", Fishbone "Ugly", Ween "Where'd the Cheese Go?", the Willy Wonka soundtrack, the Oh Brother Where Art Thou? soundtrack, the Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack, Outkast "Hey Ya!" (aka in our house as "the 1, 2, 3, ugh song") and "She Lives In My Lap" (I wish it wasn't so awesome hearing him sing along with this), The White Stripes "Hotel Yorba", Talking Heads "Burning Down the House", probably lots more that I'm forgetting.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 5 March 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

(ps I only play the non-"bitch where'd the muthafuckin cheese go at?" version of "Where'd the Cheese Go?" for him)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 5 March 2004 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, kids especially love the White Stripes. "Fell in love with a Girl", "Hotel Yorba", "Hardest Button to Button", all faves of my 9 year old boy. He'd second that Gorillaz song, too (ha, there's a hidden pun in there, isn't there?). He also likes OutKast (not just "Hey Ya!", but stuff like "Ms. Jackson" and "Bombs over Baghdad" -- in fact, absolutely anything that features overt mentions of bombs, explosions, etc) and the Beatles. He thinks Dylan's "weird" (and of course, he's right), likes Nirvana, loves anything that "sounds like robots". I'd say he's pretty Classic, although he liked that last Nickelback video, so we fought ferociously every time it came on Much Music. He actually likes a lot of stuff other than what I've remembered here. He's a great kid, really.

David A. (Davant), Saturday, 6 March 2004 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

my almost 8 yr old son LOVES female singers, Gwen Stefani is the current queen followed hard by Beyonce, Michelle Branch, J-LO (?!?) and even Sheryl Crow. Maroon 5 is a recent rock pick, along with the inexplicable Train. My 13 year old niece recently discovered "punk rock" and listened in awe to my 70s stories of seeing her new faves the Ramones. At Xmass time, Outkast's "Hey Ya" we all agreed was great

lovebug starski, Saturday, 6 March 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Rufus is 15 months old and he loved the Unsane best-of that i got in the mail. He likes metal and music with lots of bass. He likes to dance to it. But he also likes kiddie stuff. We take him to music class once a week where we dance in a circle and bang on drums and he likes the songs we sing there. The class comes with a cd and he will stand and listen to it very intently when we put it on.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 6 March 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I have been told that dub will calm a crying baby.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Saturday, 6 March 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

right now, Emma's all girl-pop at age 8: Hilary, Avril, Kelly, Joss. Sammy, who is five, just surprised me after swim lessons by busting out into "From the window....to the wall!"

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Saturday, 6 March 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

My three year old son likes the White Stripes as well...also Beyonce, Air's "Sexy Boy", and there was a Junior Boys tune on the radio last nigh that he insisted I call the station and ID for him. He likes a lot of stuff that's electronic sounding. There are some Jonathan Richman tunes that he likes as well (the precious ones, ie "I'm a Little Airplane" and "Little Dinosaur.") Also, Raffi & Dan Zanes for children's music. Classic

p.j. (Henry), Saturday, 6 March 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I have been told that dub will calm a crying baby.

welll, sometimes. Dots & Loops is way more effective.

Favorite album at the moment for Hannah (almost three years old) and Josephine (about 15 months) is by Tom Tom Club. Total winner. They think 'Wordy Rappinghood' is the shit. Plus they can dance to it and Josephine nowadays says "Jaaaaaamesss Brown" for no apparant reason.

Omar (Omar), Saturday, 6 March 2004 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Electric Six "danger high voltage" calms my 7 week old baby girl. Not sure why. My 2 year old girl favours the Evaporators "hump da dog", songs from the Powerpuff Girls DVD ,Nomeansno "graveyard shift" . They all make her dance madly around the room.

chad (chad), Sunday, 7 March 2004 01:27 (twenty-one years ago)

My 4 year old girl has The Powerpuff Girls version of 'Whenever, Wherever" by Shakira on loop for hours at a stretch. I notice they've changed that bit of the lyric where she goes, 'lucky that my breasts are small and humble/so you don't confuse them with mountains'.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Sunday, 7 March 2004 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I notice they've changed that bit of the lyric

Cowards! :)

Oh boy now they've discovered that there's a speed button on the recordplayer. :) The new thing is 'Wordy Rappinghood' at 45 rpm.

Omar (Omar), Sunday, 7 March 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I got the first album on one plus one format cassette from ageconcern for 30p, so it's all "gooeygooey um tum tum" at the mo...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

my 5 yr old has just discovered rhythm. he is cool with whatever i put on now...its great! prior to this it was all lyrics and chunes for him so the wiggles were no.1.

he busts some pretty impressive moves.

my 2 1/2 year old likes marching music. we can put on that tune from jungle book over and over and he stomps around swinging his arms.

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, so it's "Kuni Kuni Kuni Kuni um tum tum" I know...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I was on the phone with my son's mom yesterday and I overheard him in the background singing along with the chorus of The Roots' "Grits", with loud emphasis on the "say WHAT!?!"s. Awesome.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm gonna try to encourage him to say "say WHAT!?!" to his classmates and teachers ha ha.
