What yall think about Slipknot? KoRn? Marilyn Manson? Whats your favorite rock group from yesterday and today?

Tator, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why are these people so angry all the time? How do they do it? Anybody that "evil" should have magical powers or make candles flutter in their presence or something... not put on makeup and play guitars. Ok guys, I get it, you're mad, what else?

Cryosmurf, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My theory is that pull away those masks and Slipknot would be revealed as a front for Zodiac Mindwarp's latest outfit.

stevo, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Shite it just seems that the whole 'nu metal' thing has now legitimised the freakish looking goths from 10 years ago, whilst i used to get all self loathing being a shoegazer this lot just shove a million piercings in their collective faces and apply far more make up than bob smith ever saw fit...

el wanko, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what yall think?

ethan, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Slipknot is a joke. I was surprised to see them get such great reviews in Rolling Stone, but then again RS never has had good taste in music. Their music is all redundant garbage and they make no statement at all by wearing their masks and jumpsuits. It's amazing that a band can have 9 members and not ONE of them can sing or play an instrument. Korn is a little less of a joke, but I still can't stand the persistant whining depressed childhood b.s... Marilyn Manson is ancient history. He/she stopped surprising me after Antichrist Superstar. Peace.

James Hunyar, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I hated Marilyn Manson, but sort of changed my mind after "Mechanical Animals", which had a bunch of good songs, and made alienation and anomie sound more fun than Radiohead. And "The Dope Show" was a killer, killer single; I loved playing it when I used to DJ.

Sometimes I pine for Alice Cooper, tho...

Sean, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Under the masks.. SlipKnot are white trash metalheads from the trashy side of town. That's how they're viewed in their home city, and that is how they SHOULD be viewed elsewhere. They honestly wouldn't have even been popular back home if it weren't for their masks. Terrible soundalike nu-metal bands come a dime a dozen, where they're from... the gimmick is the only thing that seperated them from the rest- it's all such a horrible mess. If a member of the band didn't at one point own the popular rock club in Des Moines, I doubt they'd have even had the exposure that made them popular locally.

Bobby D. Gray, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Slipknot is my favorite Iowan band ever, but they're the only one I've heard I think. Is the best band from your town an indie rock band, by chance? Since you seem to know them, have you heard whether Slipknot keeps the masks on when they fuck the maggotettes or not? I'm dying to know...

Slipknot has no skill at all. Their music is simple, and their lyrics are simple. They are an atrocious band. Korn is also pretty bad but I think their music is getting better. Marilyn Manson is always at least funny

Aleksandr Werning, Saturday, 10 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"the knot" and "mazza" are shameless carnival hucksters whose art is finely crafted to connect with the incredibly banal observations a teenager will find profound "no-one understands the way i feel" "the govt are bad" "why can't i swear in front of mum and dad" "i iget angry" " why don't girls like me" etc. some of it is ebntertaining & there's some catchy tunes, but they're more equivalent to the marketing arm of marvel comics or the WWF than a proper rock n roll disgusto band like the dwarves or the mummies. and for their supposed spook they don't really cut it next to meshuggah and fuckhead. "my skin won't clear up and mum won't let me have the car". music for little shits

Listen up all you motherfuckers! You can say all you want about the knot, but we all fuckin know all you preppy-ass motherfuckers like this gay shit like backstreet boys and shit like that! Slipknot is one of the hottest metal bands ever known! If you think they dont have any fuckin talant id like to see your punk asses get out there, on the road (travelling as much as they do) and play the instruments like they do. They have 9 members doing theyre own fuckin job in that band, and for them to make 9 things come together and make kickass songs like they do, i think thats a shitload of talent!

Slipknot Heretic, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As far as the nu-metal goes, Slipknot gets the nod for Best Actual Pop Single By a Nu-Metal Band for "Left Behind," which did a nice job of weaving the screamed vocals and the hypersmooth processed sung vocals. Extra points for not sounding constipated during the delivery of said "clean" vocals, unlike say that guy from Staind. Slipknot's lyrics are atrocious, though.

As far as whether there are a million bands in Iowa that sound like them -- well, I live in Iowa, and I don't think it's accurate to say so. There are fewer bands around here than in any place I've ever lived, though admittedly my former places-of-residence have been Chicago, Portland, and southern California, so maybe my perspective's a bit off.

John Darnielle, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i just heard slipknot's "eyeless".. the drum'n'bass-influenced intro is pretty cool. there's something preversely thrilling about a band like this selling disco to their black-clad, angst-filled fanbase as exciting new rock. something reznor's been doing for over a decade, of course.

marek, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Slipknot is my favorite Iowan band ever, but they're the only one I've heard I think.

Weren't the Thinking Fellers originally from Iowa City? Or at least some assemblance thereof?

Brian MacDonald, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

really enjoyed it, feels way less (needlessly) complicated and directionless than anything from the last record

What a horrible track.

For a band whose entire identity and sound revolves around white suburban male rage, Slipknot sound so diluted and forced now. But that's what happens when you're in your late 40s and living comfortably. Whatshisname should stick with Stone Sour, at least that comes across as sincere.

A. Begrand, Friday, 17 May 2019 04:56 (six years ago)

Yeah, I couldn't make it through that track, though I hear the Panic at the Disco in the way it starts.

I saw them live once or twice and was always impressed by the musicianship and thrown off by the cartoon theatricality (sort of the exact opposite of Rammstein). Is Max Weinberg's son still playing drums?

It is with a broken heart, and from a place of the deepest pain, that I have to inform all of you that my youngest daughter, Gabrielle, passed away yesterday - Saturday, May 18th, 2019. She was 22 years old. Funeral arrangements will be forthcoming. My family and I ask that our privacy be respected going forward. Thank you.

Much love,

I never mentioned it in the thread since he was next door at the time, but my former neighbor was in an early version of the band (up to the release that they now refer to as their “demo” I think) and he was pretty broken up when Gray died

a fair number of kids had slipknot bumper stickers on their shitty high school kid cars in the school parking lot in the mid 90s
